Late Chiefs Drive Falls Short as Kansas City Falls 17-13 at Minnesota
Preseason Game #2

Corey Mays
Chiefs LB Corey Mays hit Vikings QB Brett Favre as he attempted a pass.
Aug. 21- The Chiefs made a valiant effort to register their first win of the preseason, but fell just inches short as Kansas City lost a 17-13 decision at the Metrodome. The Chiefs had first-and-goal at the one-yard line with 0:55 remaining, but couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone for a go-ahead score. WR Ashley Lelie was able to secure a fade pass from QB Matt Guiterriez on fourth-and-goal, but he was ruled out of bounds as time expired in a thrilling finish to Friday night’s contest.

The Vikings expanded their lead to 17-13 on a 29-yard FG by K Taylor Mehlhaff with 8:37 left in the contest after taking their first lead of the evening with 4:03 left in the third quarter. QB Tavaris Jackson made the game’s biggest play, hitting WR Darius Reynard in stride for a 64-yard TD that split the Kansas City secondary to put the Vikings ahead 14-13.

While it was the acquisition of QB Brett Favre that had the Twin Cities abuzz this week, Jackson was the one heating up the Metrodome, completing 12 of 15 passes for 202 yards and two TDs on the contest, numbers that translated into a “perfect” 158.3 rating. Meanwhile, Favre completed just one of four passes for four yards. The Chiefs took a short-lived 13-7 lead with 5:36 left in the third quarter thanks to a 37-yard FG by K Ryan Succop before Jackson orchestrated a four-play, 85-yard TD drive.

Kansas City got solid play on both sides of the ball in the first half. The Vikings posed a threat to score as the first half drew to a close, getting to the Kansas City 22-yard line as time expired in the second quarter. QB Matt Cassel looked sharp for Kansas City, orchestrating a pair of scoring drives. In his second start with the Chiefs, he completed nine of 14 passes for 99 yards with one TD, good for a 108.9 rating. Meanwhile, Kansas City’s defense didn’t permit a first down through the contest’s first 15 minutes as the Vikings accumulated just 20 yards of total offense in the first quarter.

Kansas City won the opening toss and Cassel scrambled for a first down and then hit TE Jake O’Connell to move the chains again before a fumble by RB Jamaal Charles put the ball in the hands of QB Brett Favre at the Minnesota 44-yard line. S Jarrad Page made huge stop of RB Adrian Peterson behind the line of scrimmage on fourth-and-one to get the Vikings off the field.

The Chiefs began their second offensive possession at their own 48-yard line. An 11-yard catch by WR Devard Darling moved the ball into Minnesota territory. A scrambling third-down throw from Cassel to WR Dwayne Bowe moved the ball to the Vikings 23-yard line. RB Larry Johnson was held short on a third-down play, setting up a 32-yard FG by Succop.

The Vikings went three-and-out on their ensuing possession as LB Corey Mays blitzed up the middle to force Favre to hurry his throw. Cassel and company began Kansas City’s third offensive series at their own 33-yard line. A 20-yard catch by Charles moved the chains for Kansas City on third-and-15, but a steady dose of Vikings pressure forced the Chiefs to punt.

Jackson entered the contest at quarterback on Minnesota’s next possession, but the results were the same as the Vikings were forced to punt. An 18-yard burst by Johnson moved the Chiefs into Vikings territory once again. A 20-yard connection from Cassel to WR Dwayne Bowe moved the sticks again, as Cassel executed an exquisite play-fake on the play. An end around to WR Quinten Lawrence that featured another great play fake by Cassel set the Chiefs up with first-and-goal at the seven. A four-yard quick slant to Bowe gave the Chiefs a TD to give Kansas City a 10-0 edge, capping an eight-play, 66-yard drive.

Minnesota got its initial first down of the evening with a little over 10:00 remaining in the second quarter as Peterson registered a six-yard run. The Vikings put together their most consistent drive of the evening to date under Jackson, crossing midfield for the first time. A 15-yard catch by WR Bobby Wade moved the ball to the KC 32-yard. A 16-yard screen to RB Chester Taylor gave the Vikings their fifth first down of the drive, setting Minnesota up at the Chiefs 15-yard line. Jackson’s 13-yard TD pass to Shiancoe put an exclamation point a 15-play, 97-yard TD drive.

The Chiefs took over again with a little over two minutes to play, but were forced to punt. Jackson drove the Vikings deep into KC territory as the clock expired in the first half, leaving the score at 10-7 in favor of the Chiefs.

Minnesota went three-and-out to start the second half. QB Brodie Croyle entered the game for Kansas City to begin the third quarter. Croyle took a vicious shot to the chin from DT Letroy Guion, giving Kansas City a first down by penalty. RB Jackie Battle then bulled for a first down to move Kansas City just shy of midfield. A Croyle pass to WR Mark Bradley gave the Chiefs to the Minnesota 39-yard line. A 16-yard bullet on third-and-10 by Croyle to WR Amani Toomer moved the ball to the Vikings 23-yard line. However, Croyle misfired on third down, setting the stage for a 37-yard FG by Succop. However, the Vikings quickly countered with a four-play TD drive.

Kansas City’s next drive began at the 20-yard line with Croyle still under center, but DE Martall Burnett stripped the ball from Battle, setting the Vikings up at the Kansas City 28-yard line. QB John David Booty entered the contest for Minnesota, but the Chiefs defense held as K Taylor Mehlhaff’s 40-yard FG attempt grazed the left upright and was no good.

The Chiefs regained possession at the 30-yard line, but were forced to punt. Minnesota took over at its own 28-yard line. Reynaurd hauled in another long pass, this time from Booty, as the Vikings moved into Kansas City territory. Kansas City’s defense held once again in the Red Zone, forcing Minnesota to settle for a FG.

QB Matt Gutierrez entered the game for the Chiefs on their next possession, but the Chiefs were unable to get a first down.

After a Kansas City punt, Minnesota managed a first down before being stymied by the Chiefs defense. Kansas City forced a third-and-18 when LB Jovan Belcher came up with a tackle for a two-yard loss, forcing a Viking punt on fourth-and-20.

Gutierrez took over on the Kansas City 34-yard line with 3:56 left and orchestrated a steady offensive march down the field, completing seven of 11 passes en route to the Vikings one-yard line. But the Chiefs could not punctuate the drive with a go-ahead TD.

Kansas City returns home to face Seattle at Arrowhead on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 PM.
