Chiefs Fall 17-9 to Rams in Preseason Finale
Preseason Game #4

Larry Johnson
Chiefs RB Larry Johnson rushed for 58 yards against the Rams.
Sept. 3- Rams CB Quincy Butler returned an interception 28 yards to put the home team up 14-9 with 2:56 left in the third quarter. Then, a 37-yard field goal by K Josh Brown with 4:08 left in the game extended the St. Louis lead to 17-9, a margin that the Chiefs were unable to overcome as the Rams secured the Governor’s Cup in the preseason finale for both squads at the Edward Jones Dome.

Kansas City won the coin toss and RB Jamaal Charles took a knee in the end zone, giving Croyle and the Chiefs offense the ball on the 20-yard line to open the game. Faced with a third and 10 from the 20, Charles’ draw was stuffed for a two-yard loss and forced a Kansas City punt on the opening drive.

St. Louis took over on its own 45-yard line after the punt. LB Corey Mays sacked Rams QB Kyle Boller for a 12-yard loss on the Rams first offensive play. An incomplete pass from Boller on third and 18 set up the Rams first punt of the evening. CB Maurice Leggett returned the punt to the Kansas City 11-yard line.

Croyle hit TE Sean Ryan for a 20-yard completion down the middle to the Chiefs 37-yard line. Johnson carried for six and two yards on back-to-back plays, setting up a third-and-two. Croyle’s pass deep down the right sideline overshot WR Dwayne Bowe, setting up P Dustin Colquitt’s second punt of the night.

St. Louis moved the chains for the first time on a 12-yard pass to RB Samkon Gado out of the backfield on a second and five from the 18-yard line. Lined up with a third and four, Boller found Fells for nine yards to the Rams 45-yard line. On third and nine, LB Tamba Hali sacked Boller for a six-yard loss. St. Louis P Donnie Jones booted a 58-yard kick, pinning Kansas City inside its own one-yard line to start its third drive.

Croyle hit WR Mark Bradley for nine yard on first down to give the Chiefs breathing room. Johnson moved the chains on second and one with a four-yard rush. Croyle again found Ryan down the middle for 40 yards, setting up a 31-yard Johnson scamper to the Rams six-yard line.

A holding penalty on first-and-goal pushed the Chiefs back to the 16-yard line, while a delay of game penalty set up first-and-goal from the St. Louis 21. Back-to-back incomplete passes down the left side intended for Bowe set up a third-and-goal from the 21. A screen pass to Savage netted eight yards. K Ryan Succop’s kick 31-yard field capped an 86-yard drive gave the Chiefs a 3-0 lead with 0:55 left in the first quarter.

Kansas City extended its lead to 6-0 after Succop stayed perfect on the evening, connecting from 40 yards out with 9:26 left to go in the first half after a seven-play, 76-yard drive that featured Kansas City’s longest play from scrimmage this preseason, a 70-yard ran by RB Dantrell Savage. Savage initialed appeared to be bottled up at the line of scrimmage, but kept his legs churning, eventually made a burst to the outside and then picked up a blocked from WR Mark Bradley to help spring him for a big gain.

Croyle hit WR Bobby Engram for eight yards, while RB Javarris Williams rushed for six yards on two plays. Succop hit his second field goal of the night; this time from 40 yards out after Croyle was sacked for an eight-yard loss by DE Victor Adeyanju on third and nine. A 40-yard Succop FG put the Chiefs ahead 6-0.

St. Louis took the lead 7-6 after orchestrating a 15-play, 85-yard drive that started after Kansas City recorded its second field goal with 9:15 left in the second quarter. Berlin threw a 17-yard pass to WR Ronald Curry that got the Rams to the Kansas City 43-yard line. Faced with a third and 16 from the Kansas City 39, Berlin found WR Nate Jones for 27 yards, setting up first and 10 from the 12. Darby rushed for six yards after an incomplete pass. Then Berlin hit FB Daniel Fells on a six-yard touchdown pass, putting the Rams up by one point.

The Kansas City defense stepped up late in the first half as S DaJuan Morgan intercepted a QB Brock Berlin pass at the St. Louis 25-yard line, giving the Chiefs offense one more scoring opportunity with 1:17 left before halftime. After a Croyle incompletion intended for Lawrence, Savage rushed for one yard, and Croyle scampered for six yards after eluding a potential sack, setting up Succop’s third field goal of the night. That 34-yard FG by Succop gave Kansas City a 9-7 lead going into halftime.

QB Tyler Thigpen entered the game, and faced with a third-and-nine situation, found WR Ashley Lelie for 43 yards to the St. Louis 41-yard line. An incomplete pass intended for TE Brad Cottam set up third and nine. Thigpen found Lawrence for a six-yard reception, with Lawrence fumbling the ball going for yards after the catch. St. Louis took over on its own 34-yard line.

Morgan tackled Ogbonnaya for a three-yard loss, forcing the Rams into a second-and-13 position when Null found WR Derek Stanley for nine yards. On third and four, Null connected with Stanley again for seven yards, converting the third down. A two-yard rush by Ogbonnaya, a four-yard pass from Null to TE Billy Bajema, and an incompletion forced another St. Louis punt.

Kansas City took over after a touchback on the Rams punt. RB Jackie Battle rushed for three yards. Thigpen carried for one yard on second down, and faced with a third-and-seven play, Thigpen looked for Rodney Wright on the right side. Butler gave the Rams the lead again, intercepting the Thigpen pass and returning 28 yards to the end zone, putting St. Louis up 14-9 going into the final stanza.

Kansas City gave the ball right back to the Rams after a three-and-out series after the touchdown, with the Rams funning the clock out on the third quarter, leading the Chiefs by five points.

St. Louis opened the fourth quarter with a three and out. On the punt, Wright returned the ball seven yards to the Chiefs 22-yard line. Faced with a third and nine, Thigpen threw an interception that was hauled in by Justin King at the Kansas City 27 and returned to the 26. A five-yard sack by DE Wallace Gilberry, and a Null fumble on third and 15 forced a fourth-and 28 and a Rams punt.

QB Matt Gutierrez entered the game for the Chiefs, starting on the Kansas City 12-yard line. Battle opened the drive with a nine-yard rush off the right side. Gutierrez threw incomplete on second down, but found Battle for a 25-yard completion on third and one, moving the ball to the Kansas City 44-yard line. Battle ran for seven yards on first down, and after two incomplete passes, Colquitt registered his sixth punt, a 29-yard kick, giving the Rams the ball on their own 20.

Back-to-back three yard rushes by Ogbonnaya gave St. Louis a third-and-four situation. An incomplete pass forced a fourth-and-four punt. A roughing the kicker personal foul against Kansas City gave the Rams an automatic first down. Null completed two long pass plays to WR Sean Walker after the penalty, a 14-yard throw to the Kansas City 45-yard line, and a 23-yard toss to the 22. Ogbonnaya was stopped for no gain on first down by LB Jovan Belcher. Null found Johnson for three yards on second down and threw incomplete on third down, setting up the 37-yard field goal attempt for Brown. His kick extended the St. Louis lead to eight with 4:08 left in the game on the 11-play, 61-yard drive.

After the touchdown, Lawrence returned the kickoff 44 yards to the Kansas City 43-yard line, where Gutierrez and the Kansas City offense took over with 3:59 left in the game. Gutierrez found Battle for a five-yard gain to the Chiefs 48-yard line. On third and five, Gutierrez found Lawrence across the middle for 11 yards and a Kansas City first down. After a false start penalty, Gutierrez found TE Tom Crabtree for 17 yards to the St. Louis 29-yard line. Battle rushed for two yards on first down. Back-to-back incomplete passes forced a fourth and eight for the Chiefs. Gutierrez’s swing pass intended for Battle fell incomplete, giving the Rams the ball on downs.

Ogbonnaya rushed three straight plays to drain the clock, but the Kansas City defense did not give up a first down, forcing one more St. Louis punt with 0:52 seconds left in the game. The Chiefs took over on their own six-yard line. Three-consecutive completions from Gutierrez for 14 yards, 19 yards, both to Battle, and 27 yards to Wright were not enough as the clock ran out on Kansas City’s last-minute drive.

Kansas City opens up the 2009 regular season on Sunday, September 13 against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland.
