CBS (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) will broadcast the game to a regional audience. 14-time Emmy winner Dick Enberg calls the action, while Hall of Fame QB Dan Fouts provides the color.
Radio
The Chiefs FOX Football Radio Network, anchored by KCFXFM (101.1) in Kansas City, carries all Chiefs games. Eight-time Kansas Broadcaster of the Year, Mitch Holthus, is in his 16th year handling the play-by-play duties, while Hall of Fame QB Len Dawson adds color with sideline reports from former Chiefs Pro Bowl long snapper Kendall Gammon. The KCFX pregame show begins at 9:00 AM (CT). The Chiefs Kingdom radio show with Holthus airs Mondays at 7:00 PM on the Chiefs FOX Football Radio Network.
The Match-Up
Sunday’s regular season finale between Kansas City and Denver will mark the 100th meeting between these two original AFL rivals. The Chiefs will be seeking their 54th victory in this 50-year-old duel with Denver, which would match their highest win tally against any franchise - Oakland (54).
These two franchises will meet in a regular season finale for the first time since ‘92 and will do so in Denver for the initial time since ‘68. Kansas City is 5-0 all-time against the Broncos in the last game of the regular season, but hasn’t played such a contest in Colorado since registering a 30-7 win at Mile High Stadium (12/14/68). Dating back to 2003, Denver’s final home game of the season has typically been filled with drama with three of those six games going to OT, including a loss vs. SF (12/31/06) that helped send KC to the playoffs.
The Chiefs will be attempting to register at least two division wins for the 31st consecutive season. KC is coming off a narrow 17-10 loss at Cincinnati (12/27). The Broncos are in the midst of the AFC Wild Card hunt despite a 30-27 loss at Philadelphia (12/27). Denver is in a five-team logjam at 8-7. While there are multiple postseason scenarios, a win against KC and two other contests ending favorably for Denver is the best-case scenario for the Broncos. Baltimore and the N.Y. Jets can claim the two AFC Wild Card spots with wins on Sunday.
For just the seventh time in franchise history, Kansas City will play a regular season contest in January. The Chiefs are 3-3 in such games, including a 37-7 win vs. Cincinnati (1/1/06) in their most recent January game. The Broncos are 1-4 all-time in regular season games played in January.
RB Jamaal Charles owns three straight 100-yard rushing games and needs 139 yards to become the ninth player in franchise history to reach the 1,000- yard plateau. In games played on or after November 15th, only Titans RB Chris Johnson (913) owns more rushing yards than Charles (709), while only Johnson (1,234) and Ravens RB Ray Rice (943) have more yards from scrimmage than Charles (864). P Dustin Colquitt has 39 punts inside the 20, just three shy of the NFL single-season record of 42 set by 49ers P Andy Lee in 2007. Arizona P Ben Graham also has 39 punts inside the 20 in 2009.
2009 Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City is under the guidance of first-year head coach Todd Haley. QB Matt Cassel joined the Chiefs in an off-season trade with New England. Former Eagles RB Correll Buckhalter owns 2,779 career rushing yards and 19 TDs, including 624 yards and one TD for Denver in 2009. WR Brandon Marshall (D4a-06) turned in an NFL-record 21 catches for 200 yards and two TDs at Indianapolis (12/13). His 101 catches rank second in the NFL and lead the Broncos. He also has a team-high 1,120 rec. yards and 10 TDs. He pairs with Veteran WR Jabar Gaffney, who has 40 catches for 519 yards and two TDs. WR Eddie Royal (D2-08) and TE Daniel Graham round out the receiving unit. Former Chiefs C Casey Wiegmann earned his inaugural Pro Bowl berth a year ago. He works with Gs Ben Hamilton (D4a-01) and Chris Kuper (D5-06) and Ts Ryan Clady (D1-08) and Ryan Harris (D3-07).
LB Elvis Dumervil (D4b-06) leads the NFL with 17.0 sacks in 2009, including a 4.0-sack performance at Cleveland (9/20). He is joined by LBs D.J. Williams (D1-04), Mario Haggan and Andra Davis. In the trenches, NT Ronald Fields works with DEs Ryan McBean and Kenny Peterson. Denver’s defensive backfield boasts eight-time Pro Bowl CB Champ Bailey and former Eagles seven-time Pro Bowl S Brian Dawkins. Five-time Pro Bowl CB Ty Law was signed on Nov. 7th.
