Buffalo Claims 16-10 Victory at Arrowhead
Regular Season Game #13

Jamaal Charles
Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles breaks free for a 76-yard touchdown run.
Dec. 13- Despite a career-high 181 yards from scrimmage from RB Jamaal Charles, including an electrifying 76-yard TD run, the Bills held on for a 16-10 win at Arrowhead. Kansas City’s defense forced three turnovers and limited Buffalo to 73 net passing yards. But the Chiefs committed four turnovers themselves, while the Bills accumulated 200 rushing yards en route to the victory.

Missed opportunities plagued the Chiefs all day, as Kansas City was unable to turn any of its takeaways into points. The club penetrated Buffalo territory four times on its first five possessions, but was only able to manage three points.

After both clubs went three and out on their opening possessions, Kansas City converted on third and nine when QB Matt Cassel hit TE Brad Cottam for a 26-yard gain. The Chiefs would go 11 plays before the drive stalled at the Buffalo 35-yard line.

LB Mike Vrabel registered the game’s first big play as he sacked QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and forced a fumble that was recovered by DT Ron Edwards at the Bills nine-yard line, setting the Chiefs up with first and goal. But the Bills rebuffed the Chiefs scoring opportunity when Cassel was thrown for a seven-yard loss on fourth and goal at the one-yard line.

On Buffalo’s next offensive play, RB Marshawn Lynch rattled off a 47-yard run to move the Bills into Chiefs territory. Fitzpatrick connected with TE Shawn Nelson for 17 yards to move the Bills deeper into Kansas City territory. On third and eight, Fitzpatrick found WR Terrell Owens for a nine-yard TD pass to cap the eight-play, 92-yard drive, giving Buffalo a 7-0 advantage with 0:04 left in the opening quarter.

Cassel and company responded with a scoring drive of their own. A 24-yard pass to WR Chris Chambers, opened the drive. Charles rushed for 11 yards and on third and four and made a three-yard gain on a direct snap to gain another first down. Cassel eventually connected with WR Mark Bradley for nine yards to move the Chiefs to the Buffalo 12-yard line. A replay review upheld that Chambers was short on third and three from the five-yard line, setting the stage for a 20-yard K Ryan Succop FG that made the count 7-3 in favor of the Bills with 10:25 left in the first half.

On Buffalo’s ensuing possession, CB Brandon Carr stripped the ball from Nelson after a Fitzpatrick completion and recovered it at the Buffalo 49-yard line. But the Chiefs couldn’t capitalize. Charles converted fourth and one at the Buffalo 40-yard line, the Chiefs would eventually be forced to punt. Buffalo would score on its next possession, after Vrabel almost recorded an interception when he broke up a pass near midfield. The Bills would eventually get a 41-yard FG from K Rian Lindell to up their lead to 10-3, a score that would stand at halftime.

Kansas City’s defense forced the Bills to go three and out on their opening possession of the second half. But on the Chiefs initial play from scrimmage, Cassel scrambled out of the pocket and threw a pass intended for Bradley. CB Terrence McGee picked the ball off at the Kansas City 27-yard line, giving Buffalo a golden scoring opportunity. But Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers returned the favor, intercepting Fitzpatrick in the end zone.

Again, the Chiefs couldn’t move the ball after the turnover, and the Bills began their ensuing drive at their own 44-yard line after a Kansas City punt. A 24-yard Lindell FG capped a 11-play, 50-yard drive, extending the Buffalo lead to 13-3 with 3:10 left in the third quarter.

Charles promptly regained the momentum for Kansas City. On the Chiefs next play from scrimmage, he exploded for a 76-yard TD run to narrow the Buffalo lead to 13-10 with 2:53 left in the third stanza. Charles’ run was the longest by the Chiefs since WR Derrick Alexander registered an 82-yard TD vs. Pittsburgh (12/12/99). Kansas City’s defense also responded, forcing a Buffalo three and out and punt to end the third quarter.

After a Kansas City punt, Lindell misfired on a 51-yard FG attempt, giving the ball back to the Chiefs at their own 41-yard line. Two plays later, a Cassel pass went off the hands of Chambers and into the arms of LB Paul Posluszny, who returned the ball to the Kansas City 35-yard line. Charles appeared to strip Posluszny on the return, but instant replay was unable to verify that the ball was recovered by Kansas City.

Despite a sack from LB Tamba Hali on Buffalo’s ensuing drive, the Bills were able to register another FG from Lindell, this time from 36 yards out as Buffalo took a 16-10 lead with 8:01 left in the game. Kansas City began its next drive at its own 20 and Cassel responded by hitting WR Bobby Wade for 22 yards and TE Leonard Pope for 16 yards on consecutive third-down plays to keep the Chiefs moving. A pass interference call against Buffalo gave Kansas City a first down at the Buffalo 21-yard line with 3:37 left to play. After a third-and-10 pass slipped through the hands of Chambers inside the Buffalo five-yard line, Cassel’s pass on fourth and 10 attempt was tipped and then intercepted by S Jairus Byrd, foiling the drive.

Kansas City’s defense forced another three and out to give the Chiefs one last possession at their own 27-yard line with 1:00 remaining. Kansas City’s final desperation heave was thwarted as Cassel’s pass was intercepted by S George Wilson in the end zone as time expired, sealing Buffalo’s 16-10 victory.
