Browns Run Over Chiefs in 41-34 Victory
Regular Season Game #14

Andy Studebaker & Terrance Copper
Chiefs DE Andy Studebaker celebrates with WR Terrance Copper after recovering a fumble for a touchdown.
Dec. 20- In a game filled with big plays and drastic momentum swings, Cleveland ultimately prevailed by a 41-34 margin thanks to a two kickoff return TDs by WR Josh Cribbs and a franchise-record 286 rushing yards by RB Jerome Harrison.

QB Matt Cassel led the Chiefs on an eight-play, 58-yard TD drive to tie the game at 34-34 with 2:20 left to play, connecting on a 12-yard TD pass to WR Mark Bradley on fourth and six for the score. But Cleveland answered as Harrison broke off a 28-yard TD run to give the Browns a 41-34 lead with 0:44 left in the contest. Cassel finished the game with a season-high 331 passing yards and had the Chiefs to the Cleveland 26-yard line before his final pass attempt fell incomplete.

After Cleveland opened the contest with a 12-play, 46-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 47-yard FG by K Phil Dawson, Kansas City was driving before RB Tim Castille lost a fumble. But the Chiefs defense returned the favor as CB Brandon Carr grabbed an errant QB Brady Quinn pass and returned it 31 yards to the Cleveland 49-yard line. An 18-yard completion to WR Chris Chambers would put the Chiefs deep in Browns territory, but Kansas City would be forced to settle for a 30-yard K Ryan Succop FG to tie the game at 3-3.

Cribbs took the ensuing kickoff back for a 100-yard TD, pushing the Browns back into the lead, making the score 10-3 with 3:56 left in the quarter. It marked the seventh kickoff return TD of Cribbs’ career, the most of any player in NFL history, and a total he would later add to. After a Chiefs punt gave the Browns the ball at the Cleveland 47-yard line, the Browns wasted little time adding to their lead as a 30-yard Dawson FG increased Cleveland’s lead to 13-3 with 12:32 left in the opening half.

The Chiefs would answer as with a six-play, 72-yard scoring march that featured 39-yard pass to Chambers. Cassel then connected with Chambers again, this time for a nine-yard TD to narrow the Browns lead to 13-10 with 10:04 left in the first half.

After a Cleveland punt, the Chiefs orchestrated a five-play, 85-yard drive that saw Cassel hit TE Brad Cottam for 24 yards. Three plays later, RB Jamaal Charles broke loose for a 47-yard TD run, giving the Chiefs the 17-13 lead with 4:10 left in the first half. Charles would finish the day with a career-high 150 rushing yards.

The game’s momentum seemed to firmly shift into Kansas City’s favor when the Browns next possession stalled and an errant punt snap was recovered by LB Andy Studebaker in the end zone, giving the Chiefs a 24-13 lead with 2:44 left in the half.

But the momentum would promptly swing right back into Cleveland’s favor when Cribbs returned the ensuing kickoff for a 103-yard TD. Cribbs’ NFL-record eighth career kickoff return TD cut the Chiefs advantage to 24-20 with 2:31 left in the first half.

After Kansas City was forced to punt on its opening possession of the second half, the Chiefs lead evaporated when Harrison broke off a 71-yard TD on Cleveland’s second offensive snap of the third quarter to take a 27-24 advantage. The Chiefs would never regain the lead as the third quarter would see Kansas City register a single first down. CB Brandon Flowers would register an INT to halt a Cleveland scoring drive, but it would be the lone bright spot of the quarter.

Cleveland began the fourth period much like it started the first as Harrison scored again, this time from eight yards out, extending the Browns lead to 34-24 with 12:09 left to play in the contest. Cassel then got the Chiefs moving, thanks to a 16-yard completion to Cottam and a 30-yard pass to Chambers. However, the Chiefs couldn’t strike paydirt and settled for a 27-yard Succop FG, narrowing the Cleveland margin to 34-27 with 8:08 left in the game.

Cleveland drove as deep as the Chiefs 34-yard line on its next possession, but a deep pass attempt by Cribbs fell incomplete on third down. Dawson’s subsequent 52-yard FG attempt came up short, giving the Chiefs the ball on their own 42-yard line with 4:26 remaining.

Cassel proceeded to orchestrate an eight-play, 58-yard scoring drive. The key play was a 23-yard completion to WR Dwayne Bowe, who scooped up a ball that was intended for Chambers. Charles picked up 11 yards to give Kansas City first and goal from the Cleveland 16-yard line. Faced with fourth and six from the Cleveland 12-yard line, Cassel found WR Mark Bradley in the end zone to tie the count at 34-34 with 2:20 remaining.

Faced with third and one at their own 39-yard line, Quinn broke free for a 24-yard run, moving the ball to the Chiefs 37-yard line as the Browns moved into FG range. Then on third and one from the Kansas City 28-yard line, Harrison put the final dagger into the Chiefs, breaking off a 28-yard TD run to put Cleveland ahead for good with 0:44 left to play. Cassel attempt to orchestrate one final drive for the Chiefs, there wasn’t enough time as the Browns left Arrowhead with a 41-34 victory.
