Chiefs Fall to Eagles by a 34-14 Margin at Lincoln Financial Field
Regular Season Game #3

Matt Cassel
Chiefs QB Matt Cassel walked off the field following a stalled Chiefs drive.
Sept. 27- On a day when most headlines were focused on the return of Philadelphia QB Michael Vick to professional football, it was QB Kevin Kolb and his 35-yard TD pass to TE Brent Celek with 6:43 left to go in the game that punctuated a dominant offensive performance by the Eagles as they topped the Chiefs 34-14 at a buzz-filled Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Answering Kansas City’s first scoring drive of the day, Kolb needed only one play to extend Philadelphia’s lead back to 14 points, a margin that Philadelphia would not let Kansas City narrow, as he connected with WR DeSean Jackson for a 64-yard TD pass with 8:16 left to go in the first half, pushing the score to 21-7.

In a reversal of last week’s 13-10 loss to AFC West foe Oakland, Kansas City was dominated statistically as the Eagles led in total yards (420 to 196), passing (327 to 97) and held the Kansas City offense to 99 yards rushing. Kansas City was zero for 11 on third downs, and accumulated 10 penalties for 90 yards compared to Philadelphia’s three for 20 yards.

The crowd got their first look at Vick on the Eagles second play from scrimmage. Vick, lined up as a receiver, motioned into the backfield and was used as a decoy as LB Mike Vrabel stuck McCoy for a one-yard loss. CB Brandon Flowers registered a pass break-up on third down to force an Eagle punt.

Rookie RB LeSean McCoy gave the Eagles the early 7-0 lead with 6:10 left in the first quarter on Philadelphia’s second possession of the game. McCoy took a direct snap from the backfield for a five-yard TD to cap an eight-play, 48-yard drive that took 3:10 off the clock.

Kolb, filling in for an injured QB Donovan McNabb, then led the Eagles 73 yards down the field on their next drive. Kolb hit Jackson for 43 yards to the Kansas City 20-yard line to start the 73-yard scoring drive. Kolb connected with TE Brent Celek for eight yards to the one-yard line. After DT Ron Edwards stuffed McCoy for no gain, Kolb dove into the end zone on a one-yard sneak to push the Philadelphia lead to 14-0 with 1:21 left in the first quarter.

Then the Chiefs defense made its first big play of the afternoon. With Philadelphia facing a fourth-and-one situation from the Kansas City 44-yard line, Kolb’s pass was batted down at the line by LB Mike Vrabel, giving the defense a boost and the offense the ball.

The defensive stop gave the Kansas City offense new life. On second and 17 after a holding penalty, creative play-calling had Cassel hit Bradley in the left split and Bradley throw for RB Jamaal Charles for a 26-yard gain to the Philadelphia 26-yard line. Three plays later, Cassel found Bradley in the end zone for a 13-yard TD, narrowing the Philadelphia lead to 14-7 with 8:34 left in the half.

Philadelphia wasted no time in regaining the 14-point margin as Jackson hauled in a 64-yard pass from Kolb on Philadelphia’s next offensive snap, putting the lead back to 21-7 in favor of the Eagles.

With 6:15 left in the half, Philadelphia started driving down the field and managed to make the Kansas City 11-yard line before lining up for a 29-yard K David Akers FG on fourth and six. Akers’ kick gave the Eagles the 24-7 lead with 0:31 left to go in the half.

The Kansas City offense registered another three and out to start the second half.

Philadelphia took the ball on their first drive of the second half and drove to the Kansas City 20-yard line. After overthrowing Jackson in the end zone, Kolb and the Eagles offense settled for a 38-yard Akers FG with 9:15 left in the third quarter to make the score 27-7.

Facing fourth and two, Colquitt and the Chiefs lined up for a punt but direct-snapped to S Jon McGraw who picked up four yards on the fake punt, keeping the Kansas City drive alive until Johnson lost a fumble two plays later after being hit by LB Chris Gocong.

The Kansas City defense forced an Eagles punt after Philadelphia went three and out.

Johnson opened the Chiefs next possession with a 14-yard carry followed by a 22 yard end-around by Bardley into Philadelphia territory. On third and 13, RB Jamaal Charles rushed for four yards, making the Chiefs zero for eight on third-down conversions in the game and running out the clock on the third quarter.

Both teams traded punts to open the game’s final stanza.

Kolb hit Celek for 15 yards to open Philadelphia’s next drive, and then found Celek two plays later for a 35-yard TD that extended the Eagles lead to 34-7 with 6:43 left to go in the game. The TD pass was Kolb’s second of the day, and capped a five-play, 72-yard drive.

After having to punt, McGraw recovered a fumbled snap at the Philadelphia 20-yard line, giving the Chiefs offense another scoring opprotunity. Cassel converted a fourth and seven with an eight-yard pass to WR Terrance Copper. On the next play, Cassel found WR Bobby Wade for a nine-yard TD, Cassel’s second TD pass of the afternoon.

Philadelphia was able to run out the game clock after Kansas City did not recover a last-minute onside kick, sealing the 34-14 victory.
