Chiefs Fall to Giants by 27-16 Count at Arrowhead
Regular Season Game #4
|
|
A Chiefs fan hid his face during the game.

Oct. 4- The Chiefs scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the N.Y. Giants registered a 27-16 victory at Arrowhead. Giants QB Eli Manning threw for 292 yards with three TDs, including a pair scores to WR Steve Smith, who finished the contest with 11 receptions for 134 yards.
The contest got off to an ominous start as RB Jamaal Charles fumbled on the game’s opening kickoff. Giants LB Bryan Kehl recovered the fumble at the Kansas City 16-yard line, setting New York for its first score of the day, a three-yard Manning-to-Smith TD pass to give the Giants a 7-0 lead with 12:44 left in the first quarter.
After going three and out on their opening possession, the Chiefs registered their own takeaway as LB Tamba Hali recorded his 13th career forced fumble while sacking Manning. DE Glenn Dorsey recovered the ball at the New York 41-yard line. QB Matt Cassel and company took advantage of the miscue, running RB Larry Johnson on four successive plays to get to the Chiefs 16-yard line. A 34-yard K Ryan Succop FG narrowed the Giants lead to 7-3.
On New York’s ensuing possession, WR Mario Manningham bobbled a ball before eventually hauling it in for a 43-yard completion down the right sideline, setting the Giants up at the Kansas City 16-yard line. Two plays later, the Chiefs recorded their second takeaway of the day as CB Brandon Flowers intercepted another Manning pass mishandled by Manningham, returning it to the Kansas City 20-yard line. But the Chiefs were unable to take advantage of the turnover.
Manning orchestrated a four-play, 71-yard drive to start the second quarter that was capped by a 25-yard TD pass to Smith. A 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on S Jarrad Page that was vehemently protested by head coach Todd Haley helped extend the drive for the Giants. Smith’s score pushed the New York lead to 14-3 with 13:39 left in the first half.
After both clubs exchanged a pair of punts, the Chiefs moved the ball efficiently on their final drive of the first half. Taking over at their nine-yard line, the Chiefs used a heavy dose of RB Larry Johnson to move the chains. Johnson picked up 15 yards to gain a first down, while an 18-yard connection from Cassel to WR Bobby Engram moved the ball to the Chiefs 44-yard line. A nine-yard completion to WR Mark Bradley moved Kansas City to midfield, but the Chiefs were forced to punt again, turning the ball back over to New York with 1:49 remaining in the first half.
Manning ran the two-minute drill proficiently, hitting on 13-yard and 21-yard passes to Smith to give the Giants first and 10 at the Chiefs 38-yard line with 0:36 remaining. A 24-yard completion to TE Kevin Boss got the Giants to the Chiefs seven-yard line, allowing Manning to spike the ball. K Lawrence Tynes drilled a 24-yard FG to extend New York’s lead to 17-3 at halftime.
The Chiefs attempted an onside kick to open the second half, but were unable to recover, giving the Giants the ball on the Kansas City 42-yard line. New York converted on a fourth and three with a direct snap to RB Ahmad Bradshaw, to move the ball to the Chiefs 26-yard line. But KC’s defense held from there, forcing New York to settle for a 40-yard Tynes FG as the Giants extended their lead to 20-3 with a with 10:25 left in the third quarter.
After the Cassel was sacked on back-to-back plays, the Chiefs were forced to punt again, giving the ball back to New York at its own 15-yard line. Manning again drove the Giants deep into Kansas City territory, but Tynes misfired wide right on a 38-yard FG try with 3:00 remaining in the third quarter, keeping the score at 20-3.
Following another Chiefs punt, Manning orchestrated his third TD drive of the game. A six-play, 66-yard scoring march was highlighted by a 54-yard TD pass to WR Hakeem Nicks gave the Giants a 24-point lead with 13:17 left in the game as New York pushed its advantage to 27-3.
But the Chiefs wouldn’t go away. Charles returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to the Giants 48-yard line. Then, Johnson burst off right tackle for a 19-yard gain to move the Chiefs to the 29. On fourth down and 11, WR Bobby Engram made a great second-effort to get to the sticks for an apparent first down. The spot on the field had Engram short of the sticks, but a subsequent replay review requested by the Chiefs overturned the ruling to give Kansas City a first down. The Chiefs then converted another fourth-and-11 play when Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe, to give KC first and goal at the eight. Cassel eventually punctuated the 11-play, 48-yard drive with a one-yard TD pass. KC’s two-point try failed, making the count 27-9.
Kansas City forced a three and out on New York’s next series as CB Brandon Carr batted down a pass from Giants backup QB David Carr on third down. Cassel quickly moved the Chiefs into scoring territory once again. On third and seven, Cassel scrambled 12 yards for a first down before hitting Ryan for a 43-yard gain to give the Chiefs first and goal at the six. A defensive pass interference penalty eventually put Kansas City at first and goal from the one. Facing fourth and goal from the two, Cassel appeared to pull the ball down to run, but pulled back and threw a lob pass to a diving WR Bobby Wade for a two-yard TD. Succop’s PAT made the score 27-16 in favor of the visitors with 5:01 left in the game.
After a failed onside kick attempt, S Mike Brown sacked Carr for an 11-yard loss on third down, giving the Chiefs offense the ball back with 3:56 left to go in the game. But the Chiefs could only manage one first down. The Giants effectively milked the clock after Kansas City turned the ball over on downs. The Chiefs got one final snap to end the contest as New York departed Arrowhead with a 27-16 victory.
