Chiefs Fall to Cowboys 26-20 in OT
Regular Season Game #5

Matt Cassel & Mike Vrabel
Chiefs QB Matt Cassel celebrates after throwing a touchdown pass to Mike Vrabel.
Oct. 11- It took overtime to settle “The Game That Never Was,” but it was the Cowboys who prevailed by a 26-20 duel at Arrowhead. Cowboys WR Miles Austin caught a 60-yard TD with 8:33 left in the extra session for the decisive score after Dallas went ahead for the first time in the game, taking a 20-13 lead with 2:16 left in regulation on a 59-yard TD.

Kansas City forced a fifth quarter as QB Matt Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe in the back of the end zone for a 16-yard TD on fourth and seven, knotting the game at 20-20 with 0:24 seconds remaining in regulation. Despite being outgained in total yards (498 to 307), Kansas City kept the game close, capitalizing on two first-half Dallas turnovers, but the Chiefs didn’t have an answer for the QB Tony Romo and his favorite target when it mattered the most.

On Dallas’ opening drive of the game, NT Ron Edwards stuffed RB Marion Barber for a four-yard loss on second down. Romo’s third-down pass came up three yards short of the first-down sticks, giving Kansas City the ball on its own nine-yard line.

The Chiefs were digging deep into their bag of tricks early with a flea-flicker and a double reverse on back-to-back plays but couldn’t manage a first down and had to punt on their first series as well.

The Kansas City defense held strong again as Romo and the Cowboys offense seemed poised for points until a Dallas penalty and two incomplete passes set up a 40-yard FG attempt. K Nick Folk’s kick was wide left; keeping the score deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Chiefs opened the scoring when K Ryan Succop was true from 47 yards out. That kick capped a four-play drive that was set up after Dallas WR Patrick Crayton muffed a punt that was recovered by CB Maurice Leggett at the Dallas 23-yard line.

On the Cowboys ensuing possession, a Romo fumble on second and six was recovered by S Mike Brown and returned to the Cowboys 16-yard line. RB Larry Johnson was the workhorse, carding three rushes and a nine-yard swing reception from Cassel that got the ball down to the one. From there, Cassel hit LB Mike Vrabel, who checked in as a tackle eligible, from one-yard out to take the 10-0 lead with 11:04 left in the first half.

Late in the first half Romo led Dallas on an 11-play, 83-yard drive, but KC’s defense held the Cowboys to a 22-yard FG from K Nick Folk to make the count 10-2 at intermission. The Chiefs opening drive of the second half resulted in a three and out, with P Dustin Colquitt’s kick pinning Dallas at its own three-yard line. DE Glenn Dorsey and LB Demorrio Williams applied strong pressure in the Cowboys backfield and nearly brought down Barber in the end zone for a safety. Dallas had to punt out of its own end zone.

Faced with third and three, Cassel kept the drive moving towards with end zone with a seven-yard completion to Mark Bradley. The drive stalled at the Dallas 20-yard with Succop connecting on a 38-yard FG to cap a nine-play drive with 6:30 left in the third quarter and giving Kansas City a 13-3 double-digit lead.

The Cowboys registered their first explosive play of the day as RB Tashard Choice capped an eight-play, 72-yard TD drive with a 36-yard scamper into the end zone, narrowing the Kansas City lead to 13-10 with 1:55 left in the third quarter.

Dallas picked up the fourth quarter where it left off as Romo connected with Austin for 34 yards. RB Marion Barber then rushed for 17 yards. The Kansas City defense stepped up again in the Red Zone as the Chiefs held the Dallas offense to a 28-yard Folk FG, knotting the game at 13-13 with 11:10 left to go.

Spurred by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the defense which resulted in a first down, Cassel hit Bowe for 11 yards to move the sticks. On third and two, Cassel took the ball right over the center for six yards. Succop lined up for a 53-yard FG that was blocked by Dallas NT Jay Ratliff, giving Dallas the ball back at its own 36-yard line with 3:09 left in the game.

Dallas took only three plays and 53 seconds to cover 64 yards capped by a 59-yard Romo-to-Austin TD pass to take the 20-13 lead with 2:27 left in the game.

Faced with third and 14, Cassel dropped back in the two-minute offense and hit WR Bobby Wade deep down the middle for 25 yards to keep the drive alive. Cassel found Bowe for 17 yards to the Dallas 19 yard-line. After two incomplete passes and a three-yard completion to RB Jamaal Charles, Cassel fired a bullet to Bowe in the back of the end zone for the game-tying score, 20-20.

Kansas City won the overtime toss, starting its first extra-period possession at its own 27-yard line but traded punts with Dallas in the first four minutes of overtime.

The Cowboys sealed the game with a 60-yard Romo-to-Austin TD pass on a second-and-15 play on Dallas’ second overtime possession, to vault the Cowboys to the 26-20 victory.
