Regular Season Game #6

Chiefs K Ryan Succop celebrates after connecting on one of his four field goals.
|
Oct. 18- The Chiefs registered their initial victory under General Manager Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley thanks to a solid all-around performance in all three phases of the game. Rookie K Ryan Succop nailed a career-high four FGs, including a 46-yard make with 3:36 left to give the Chiefs a 9-6 lead. He added a 24-yard FG with 0:41 left to give the Chiefs the 12-6 lead, while LB Tamba Hali sacked QB Todd Collins in the end zone with 0:26 remaining to make the final count 14-6.
Kansas City’s defense was stifling for most of the afternoon, permitting just seven first downs, the club’s best single-game total in over a decade. The Chiefs also held a significant margin the time of possession battle (37:10 to 22:50).
After a three-and-out on the Chiefs opening drive, Kansas City registered the first big play of the day on Washington’s opening drive as LB Mike Vrabel dove on a fumble by Redskins RB Clinton Portis at the Kansas City 47-yard line. After converting a fourth and one with a dive by FB Mike Cox, the Chiefs drive stalled and were forced to punt.
After Washington’s first punt of the day, QB Matt Cassel hit WR Mark Bradley for 14 yards, then RB Larry Johnson picked up 11 yards on a toss sweep, getting the ball to the 50-yard line. On third and 10, Cassel hit a diving WR Dwayne Bowe who got back up and ran for an 18-yard completion. After a nine-yard pass to Johnson, Kansas City lined for fourth and two. Cassel was sacked and fumbled the ball which was recovered by G Mike Goff as the Chiefs turned over to the Redskins on downs.
The Redskins deepest threat of the first quarter was a QB Jason Campbell pass deep down the right sideline for WR Devin Thomas, but was caught out of bounds. On third and ten, Campbell his TE Chris Cooley in the left flat for 25 yards and a first down.
Washington’s drive stalled and they had to punt to start the second quarter. Pinned at the Kansas City five-yard line, Cassel hit WR Bobby Wade for 16 yards to give the offense some breathing room. After a holding penalty forced third and 11, the Chiefs had to punt.
Washington recorded a three and out on its next series, with the Chiefs taking possession on their own 14-yard line.
After a roughing the passer penalty, Johnson turned in his longest rush from scrimmage this season as he scampered 17 yards off right tackle. Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe for a 13-yard gain which Johnson followed up with runs of three yards and 10 yards to get to the Washington 23-yard line. After three plays, Succop hit a 39-yard FG to give the Chiefs the 3-0 lead with 5:34 left in the first half.
S Jon McGraw turned in back-to-back strong defensive plays on Washington’s next possession and he brought Portis down for no gain and followed that with a six-yard sack of Campbell, forcing another Redskins punt.
Kansas City went three and out on its next drive, giving Washington the ball back with just over two minutes before halftime. In the two-minute offense, Campbell completed passes of 12, nine and 17 yards to help get the ball to the Kansas City 36-yard line. Faced with fourth and one with six seconds left at the KC 36-yard line, Washington opted to forgo the 54-yard FG attempt and instead went for the end zone. Campbell’s pass was intercepted by CB Brandon Flowers at the three-yard line and returned to the 36-yard line, locking in the 3-0 halftime margin for the Chiefs.
Washington opened the second half with Collins under center. On the second play of the half, Collins hit WR Santana Moss for 42 yards to the Kansas City 27-yard line. Collins hit TE Chris Cooley for an 11-yard gain to the KC 22-yard line. But KC’s defense before K Shaun Suisham hit the field for his 40-yard FG to tie the game at 3-3.
Kansas City couldn’t sustain its next drive as they moved the ball to the Washington 36-yard line, but punted instead of lining up for the 54-yard FG attempt.
On the ensuing Redskins drive, Portis broke free for a 78-yard rush to the Kansas City 10-yard line. From there, Washington couldn’t get any closer to the end zone and Suisham connected on his second FG of the day from 28 yards out to go up 6-3 over the Chiefs with 6:06 left in the third quarter.
Kansas City answered on its very next drive and they orchestrated a nine-play, 4:54 drive that covered 42 yards and was capped by a 46-yard Succop FG, tying the game at 6-6 with 1:12 left in the third quarter, which would be the score heading into the final stanza. During the drive, Cassel hit Bradley for eight yards, followed that with passes of 20 and 16 yards to Bowe on his next two completions.
Washington opened the fourth quarter with a punt, backing the Chiefs offense up to their own 15-yard line to start their opening drive of the fourth quarter and forced Kansas City to punt.
The Redskins could not get anything going offensively as the Chiefs forced a three and out as Vrabel sacked Collins for an eight-yard loss. Collins coughed up the ball on the sack with DE Glenn Dorsey tackling Cooley after he picked up the fumble. LB Demorrio Williams blocked P Glenn Pakulak’s kick and the Redskins touched the ball at the 50-yard line after the block, downing it at midfield where Kansas City would take over.
Kansas City got to the Washington 36-yard line but couldn’t inch any closer after an illegal forward pass penalty, and were forced to punt. P Dustin Colquitt’s kick was downed at the three-yard line by CB Maurice Leggett.
The Chiefs defense put pressure on the Washington signal-caller as the Redskins couldn’t get enough for a first down after a seven-yard pass to RB Ladell Betts, forcing the Redskins to punt.
On the ensuing possession, Cassel hit TE Sean Ryan for 11 yards and a first down, getting the ball to the Washington 25-yard line. After two incompletions and a two-yard loss from RB Jamaal Charles, Succop connected on his third kick and second 46-yard FG of the day to give Kansas City the 9-6 lead with 3:36 left in the contest.
Collins fumbled the ball on Washington’s next series on third and eight with Betts picking it up at the Washington 24-yard line where McGraw tackled him for a six-yard loss, forcing a punt on fourth and 14.
Kansas City took over at the Washington 37-yard line after a Wade returned the ball 17 yards before fumbling it, with teammate S DaJuan Morgan in position to recover it. Cassel hit Bowe for a 32-yard completion to get the ball into the Red Zone inside the two-minute warning.
With first and goal from the nine-yard line, Kansas City only gained three yards on three plays, sending Succop out for his fourth FG of the afternoon. Succop put his 24-yard attempt through the uprights, extending the Kansas City lead to 12-6 with 0:41 left in the game.
After kicking off and a block in the back penalty by Washington, Hali sacked Collins in the end zone for a safety to extend the Kansas City lead to 14-6 with 0:26 left, marking the Chiefs first sack the 2009 season.
Washington’s onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and Cassel was able to assemble the Chiefs in the victory formation for their initial victory of 2009.
