Chiefs Fall to Jaguars 24-21 Despite Late Rally
Regular Season Game #8

Jamaal Charles
Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles fights for yardage in the 1st quarter.
Nov. 8- Despite a furious fourth-quarter rally that saw the Chiefs score 15 unanswered points in the final 2:32 thanks to a pair of QB Matt Cassel TD connections to newly-acquired WR Chris Chambers, Jacksonville was able to hold on for a 24-21 victory against Kansas City.

The Chiefs were haunted by big plays defensively all day, including a 61-yard TD catch by WR Mike Sims-Walker, who finished the contest with 147 yards. Offensively, Kansas City continued to struggle convert third downs, going four for 13 in that area, with all of those conversions coming in the final quarter. Meanwhile, Jacksonville converted nine of its 16 third-down opportunities. Jacksonville held a sizeable advantage in the offensive categories, outgaining the Chiefs by over 100 yards (426 to 301). The Jaguars also held a significant margin in the time of possession (36:13 to 23:47).

The Kansas City defense started the day on a high note, holding the Jacksonville offense and explosive Jones-Drew to a three and out on its opening possession. QB Matt Cassel fired back-to-back completions to open the game for Kansas City. The Chiefs offense moved the ball to the Jacksonville 28-yard line, where K Ryan Succop nailed a 45-yard FG to give the Chiefs their first opening-drive points of the season and the 3-0 lead with 9:54 left in the first quarter.

Jaguars QB David Garrard organized a balanced attack with a 12-yard completion to RB Maurice Jones-Drew and a nine-yard pass to RB Rashad Jennings to pace the offense with a steady dose of Jones-Drew rushes. Jennings punctuated the drive with a 28-yard TD run to give Jacksonville the 7-3 lead with 4:33 left in the first period.

Kansas City went three and out on the next possession, with P Dustin Colquitt booting a 70-yard punt to pin the Jaguars at their own 10-yard line. After holding Jones-Drew to three yards on first and second downs and a holding penalty backed Jacksonville up to its own seven-yard line, Garrard hit WR Jarrett Dillard for 33 yards and WR Mike Thomas took a reverse 18 yards to move the ball to the Kansas City 40-yard line. Garrard hit Jones-Drew across the middle for 15 yards.

With Jacksonville seemingly poised for points, the Kansas City defense rose to the occasion as LB Corey Mays brought Jones-Drew down in the backfield for a four-yard loss while DE Wallace Gilberry tallied his third sack of the season, bringing Garrard down for an 11-yard loss. The loss forced Jacksonville K Josh Scobee to attempt a 53-yard FG, but his attempt was wide left, keeping the score 7-3 in favor of the Jaguars.

After trading punts on three successive drives, Kansas City registered the biggest defensive play of the game as LB Derrick Johnson forced his 11th career fumble as he hit WR Torry Holt. S DaJuan Morgan recovered the loose ball at the Jacksonville 20-yard line.

RB Kolby Smith, who was activated from Reserve/PUP on Saturday, rushed for 12 yards to get to the Jacksonville eight-yard line. With first and goal from the eight-yard line, the Chiefs could not get closer than the three-yard line, where Succop lined up for his second FG of the day, converting the 21-yard kick to narrow the Jacksonville lead to 7-6 with 2:38 left in the first half.

For the second time in the game, Jacksonville answered a Kansas City FG with a TD of its own on the very next drive. This time, Garrard connected with Sims-Walker for a 61-yard TD, taking only 1:02 to extend the Jaguars lead to 14-6 with 1:02 before halftime.

After the TD, Kansas City got the ball close enough for a 56-yard Succop FG attempt with time expiring, but into a stiff breeze, his kick fell well short. It was returned out of the end zone by CB Rashean Mathis, who was tackled by Colquitt to end the half.

Kansas City received the ball to open the second half, but couldn’t ignite the offense as Cassel was sacked for a four-yard loss and the three and out forced another Colquitt punt.

After keeping Jones-Drew in check and putting pressure on Garrard, Kansas City forced Jacksonville to punt on its opening possession of the second half. Jacksonville registered the first big play of the second half as Garrard connected with Sims-Walker for 45 yards to the Kansas City 26-yard line. From there, Jones-Drew gained 12 yards on three rushes, but the drive stalled. Scobee hit a 27-yard FG to extend the lead to 17-6 with 0:47 left in the third quarter.

After trading possessions and punts throughout the fourth quarter, Jones-Drew made his mark on the scoreboard as he rumbled into the end zone from 10 yards out with 4:26 left to play in the game to extend the lead to 24-6 in favor of the Jaguars. The TD was set up by a 44-yard punt return by WR Mike Thomas that set Jacksonville up at the Kansas City 22-yard line.

Then the Kansas City rally began. Cassel connected with Chambers for a 54-yard TD to make the score 24-13 with 2:32 left in the game and giving the Chiefs their longest offensive play of the season. Following the score, Succop recovered his own onside kick as it bounced off a Jacksonville player, giving the Chiefs the ball back with just over two minutes left to play. Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe for 36 yards to the Jacksonville 20-yard line to keep the late-game comeback alive. A seven-yard pass to WR Lance Long converted a crucial third down at the Jacksonville five-yard line. From there, Cassel connected with Chambers for his second TD catch of the day, this time five yards, bringing the score to 24-21 with 1:01 left to play.

Kansas City’s final quest for the improbable comeback was thwarted as the Jaguars recovered Succop’s second onside kick and were able to run out the clock, handing the Chiefs a 24-21 defeat.
