Chiefs Register 16-10 Victory, Extend Winning Streak at Oakland to Seven Games
Regular Season Game #9

Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles runs in the open field against the Raiders .
Nov. 15- The Chiefs made critical plays at crucial junctures to claim their seventh consecutive victory at Oakland. Kansas City produced a 16-10 victory at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum as S Mike Brown clinched the win with a INT with 0:38 remaining, his second interception of the day. RB Jamaal Charles finished the contest with a season-high 103 yards, including a 44-yard TD, while K Ryan Succop banged through a pair of FGs.

Despite turning the ball over three times, Kansas City was able to outgain Oakland in total yards (318 to 272) and in the air (206 to 90). The Raiders were penalized 10 penalties as penalties proved costly at integral points throughout the game. Both clubs struggled on third downs. Kansas City was one for 15 and Oakland managed two conversions on 16 attempts.

Raiders RB Michael Bush scampered for 60 yards down to the Kansas City four-yard line on the second play from scrimmage. Bush’s run set up a one-yard RB Justin Fargas TD two plays later, giving the Raiders the 7-0 lead with 12:42 left in the first quarter

Following Oakland’s opening-drive score, QB Matt Cassel looked for WR Chris Chambers deep down the right sideline on third and 12 on the Chiefs opening drive, but his pass was intercepted by CB Chris Johnson, giving Oakland the ball back on its own 33-yard line.

On Oakland’s next drive, the Raiders picked up one first down on a five-yard Fargas rush and had a chance to keep the drive moving until CB Brandon Flowers stepped up to tackle WR Johnnie Lee Higgins two yards short of the first-down stick, forcing Oakland’s first punt of the day.

Kansas City P Dustin Colquitt punted the ball back to Oakland after a three-and-out.

The Kansas City defense forced its own three-and-out as Oakland QB JaMarcus Russell threw two incomplete passes and Carr stuffed Bush for a one-yard loss in the series.

Cassel opened the Chiefs next drive with a 30-yard pass to Chambers to spark the Kansas City offense, but it wasn’t enough as the drive stalled, setting up Succop’s 50-yard FG to make the score 7-3 in favor of Oakland with 4:54 left in the first quarter.

Kansas City forced an Oakland three-and-out but the momentum shifted right back to the Silver and Black as RB Dantrell Savage muffed the punt which was recovered by LB Jon Condo at the Kansas City 37-yard line.

The Raiders settled for their own 50-yard FG by Janikowski, making the score 10-3 with 2:10 left in the first quarter.

Faced with fourth and one at the Oakland 44-yard line, head coach Todd Haley left his offense on the field, and Charles reeled off a 44-yard TD scamper to cap the six-play, 66-yard drive and to tie the score at 10-10 with 12:25 left in the first half.

The Kansas City TD sparked new life in the Chiefs defense as Flowers broke up a deep pass intended for WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. DE Wallace Gilberry and LB Tamba Hali combined to drop Russell for a 13.0-yard sack, forcing another Raiders punt.

Cassel found Bowe for 41 yards down the left sideline to get in Oakland territory on the opening play of KC’s ensuing drive. Cassel then hit Chambers for 24 yards to move the ball to the Oakland seven-yard line. The drive stalled in the Red Zone, with Succop hitting a 25-yard FG to give KC the 13-10 lead with 6:48 left in the first half.

Kansas City got the ball to start the second half and Cassel came out throwing. The Chiefs penetrated as deep as the Raiders 37-yard line. Succop stepped onto the field for a 52-yard FG try, but his kick sailed wide left to leave the score at 13-10 with 10:43 to go in the third quarter. Oakland could not take advantage of the missed Succop FG as Janikowski misfired his own 45-yard attempt wide left, his initial miss of the year.

On the game’s most bizarre play, Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe for 12 yards on KC’s ensuing drive, but Bowe had the ball knocked away as he was being tackled. Multiple players from both squads attempted to gain possession of the ball before Chiefs G Brian Waters jumped on it at the Oakland 32-yard line to regain possession. But Kansas City would give it away on downs after failing to convert a fourth-and-one pass from the Oakland 14-yard line.

The Kansas City defense held strong, forcing a three-and-out after the Raiders netted negative four yards on the drive. CB Maurice Leggett returned the ensuing punt to the Oakland 48-yard line. However, a mishandled exchange between Cassel and Charles on the first play of the series was recovered by LB Thomas Howard, giving the Raiders new life.

Back-up QB Bruce Gradkowski entered the contest in place of QB JaMarcus Russell, but Oakland was forced to punt. In total, KC forced 11 Oakland punts on the day. On Oakland’s next possession, S Mike Brown registered the Chiefs first takeaway of the day as Flowers tipped a Gradkowski pass intended for Higgins with Brown then snatching the ball out of mid-air at the Oakland 47-yard line.

Faced with third and 11 on the Chiefs next possession, Cassel’s pass for Bowe was incomplete, but a defensive pass interference penalty gave the Chiefs a first down at the Oakland 29-yard line. Charles got the offense inside the Red Zone with a nine-yard run and followed that with a seven more yards on two carries. Cassel was dropped for a loss of two on a designed QB draw on third and seven. Succop connected from 31-yards out to extend the Kansas City lead to 16-10 with 6:17 left to play in the game.

DE Alex Magee sacked Gradkowski for a 10-yard loss on Oakland’s next possession. Kansas City got the ball back with 4:38 remaining and was able to run the clock down to the two-minute warning before giving the Raiders on final opportunity. The Raiders took over at their own 20-yard line with 1:53 left to play. A 22-yard completion to WR Darrius Heyward-Bey that was upheld by a replay review moved the ball to the Kansas City 26-yard line with 0:38 remaining. Oakland’s final push toward the end zone was stifled as Brown hauled in his second interception of the day off a Gradkowski pass intended for Heyward-Bey at the 10-yard line, sealing a 16-10 victory.
