I don’t even know where to begin. The Chiefs come out and play their best game of the season and they still lose, at home, to Houston. The Chiefs totally outplayed Houston and should have won this game. The only thing I can think of is that the karma has finally reversed because Houston did to us what we did to a lot of teams last year, won a game that they had no business winning. Here are my thoughts on the Chiefs loss:
Though the Chiefs fell to 0-3, there is life on this team and there is hope. They can still salvage this season.
Trent Green is one of the scrappiest quarterbacks in the NFL. He is the unquestioned leader on this team, and he’s got a tough job ahead of him.
After a rough start to the season, Green looked really good today, throwing for three touchdowns and finished the game with a 111.0 QB rating.
Tony Gonzalez caught 8 passes for 106 yards and one touchdown.
I don’t know the right words to describe the play of Priest Holmes. He was questionable all week with an injured ankle, then he goes out and carries the ball 32 times for 134 yards, and damn near runs down and strips the ball from Marcus Coleman on his 102 yard interception return.
Speaking of which, why are we passing the ball inside the five-yard line when we have the league’s best goaline running back in Priest Holmes?
Whatever happened to Priest Holmes as a receiving threat? The only pass attempted to him today was when he was lined up as a wide receiver. Where are the screen passes to him and Blaylock that the Chiefs had so much success with last season?
Chris Horn finally got some playing time and contributed with a touchdown reception.
The Chiefs offense moved the ball well, but continues to suffer from penalties and bad play calling at the worst possible times.
Penalties. I’m not going to get into which ones were legit and which ones were crap because it will do no good. But they killed us again.
Through three games the Chiefs have been penalized 26 times for 243 yards. The Chiefs didn’t reach that yardage mark until the seventh game last season.
The Chiefs defense held Houston to under 300 total yards.
The Chiefs defense allowed only 76 rushing yards and 2.9 yards per carry.
The Chiefs defense allowed only 3 of 10 third down conversions.
The Chiefs held the ball for 35:07. Houston 24:50.
The Chiefs defense allowed only 76 rushing yards and 2.9 yards per carry.
Pursuit and tackling was much better in this game. There’s no denying the improvement shown today compared to the first two games of the season. This better continue because Jamal Lewis is up next.
Despite his rough week, Eric Warfield played another good game and recorded his third interception of the season. It appears that he may finally be turning the corner, so why wasn’t he matched up on Andre Johnson in the 4th quarter?
The Chiefs defense allowed only 76 rushing yards and 2.9 yards per carry.
Lional Dalton had a great game last week and I thought it might be a fluke, but he was a force again today.
I still can’t figure out how the Chiefs lost this game.
