And the Sky Falls no More

Being a Kansas City resident in the past few weeks has been less than grand, let me tell you. A football city with very high expectations for its team and that team staggers out to an 0-3 start and is riddled with injuries to start the season. Hence the falling sky title. This town was in disarray with the Kansas City Chiefs and it looked as though they’d stagger on into Baltimore on Monday Night and get their collective butts handed to them while the nation watched. Not.

Instead they pull it all together:

  • Priest Holmes gets a little pre-game motivation in a taped message from his father in Iraq. Thanks ABC. Holmes tore through the “great” Baltimore defense for 125 yds. and 2 scores.

  • The Chiefs offense sustained long meticulous drives that kept Jamal Lewis on the sidelines giving him ample time to ponder his pending drug charges. Oops, did I say that? (15 Attempts for 73yds held no candle to his 180+ day last week)

  • Chris Horn arrives as a legitimate wideout for a team that has an injury bug problem in this department.

  • Johnnie Morton critics had to sit quietly and watch as he hauled in 5 catches for 64 yards and a few of those catches were not only great catches they were big plays too.

  • Hang on for a sec while I dial up the WAAmbulance for Mr. Ray Lewis who used up most of his Mic’d up time crying about the Chiefs blockers man handling him. The Chiefs ran right at Lewis and blocked him well.

  • Trent Green was marvelous under pressure and squirmed his way out of many predicaments to make big plays.

  • And last but definitely not least the Chiefs defense looked like a middle of the pack defense if not better. They have steadily gotten better as the season progresses. I would like to take this time to remind you of my article earlier this year that states how it would be foolish to judge this defense before week 4 or 5. Dominick Davis didn’t live up to the big game he was sure to have against this Chiefs defense and guess what, neither did Jamal Lewis. The Chiefs were flying to the ball and tackling much better and getting pressure on young Kyle Boller and forcing bad throws.

This game held huge weight for the Chiefs in that if they lost they would fall to 0-4 and could possibly continue on to some ridiculous record of 0-7. You figure they drop to Baltimore and they have to go into Jacksonville, a team that won in Tennessee, 0-4 with no confidence and drop to 0-5. They then invite Michael Vick to KC and watch him pick them apart by air and by ground and they plop to 0-6. Ah, if it isn’t good ol’ Peyton Manning and company. Peyton has shown the ability to win in Arrowhead and when he slides in here to greet the Chiefs and an Arrowhead stadium full of suicidal Chiefs fans and tear this defense back to front and put up lots of points as they are known to do and the Chiefs are – yep – 0-7.

Yes they are merely 1-3 now but this game meant so much more than a simple tally in the win column for this Chiefs team. They arrive at the bye week with confidence that they are back. The smile and enthusiastic fist pump was back for coach Vermeil Monday night when the players that he believes in so much made play after play. They will go to work in the following weeks with the idea that Jacksonville is just another tough road game they have to get through and they’ve already done this once. Baltimore is a tough, tough home team and the Chiefs rose to the occasion. Feel that Kansas City? We are breathing again!
