January 2-8
Jan. 2, 1983- The Chiefs cruised to an easy win over the Jets, 37-13. A small crowd of only 11,902 fans show up for the season finale of the strike-plagued campaign. The Chiefs finished with a 3-6 record.
Jan. 2, 1993- Kansas City exited quickly and quietly from the playoffs, losing to the Chargers 17-0 in San Diego.
Jan. 2, 2000- The Chiefs fell to the Raiders at Arrowhead, 41-38 in overtime. The loss cost the Chiefs the AFC West title and a playoff berth.
Jan. 4, 1970- The Chiefs rode their defense to the last AFL Championship, defeating the Raiders in Oakland, 17-7. Wendell Hayes and Robert Holmes each scored a touchdown, and Jan Stenerud kicked a field goal late in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Emmitt Thomas picked off a couple of passes to lead a stingy defense.
Jan. 4, 1983- Head coach Marv Levy is fired.
Jan. 4, 1998- The Chiefs failed to convert on a last-ditch drive and lost to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium, 14-10. Kansas City held the Broncos to 272 yards of total offense and committed no turnovers, but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. A bad call in the end zone, a missed field goal and a poorly-timed fake field goal attempt were problems the Chiefs couldn’t overcome. In the final seconds of the game, Elvis Grbac’s fourth down pass to Lake Dawson near the end zone fell incomplete and the Broncos, not the Chiefs, moved on to the AFC title game.
Jan. 5, 1989- Head coach Frank Gansz is fired.
Jan. 5, 1991- The Chiefs suffered a heart-wrenching loss to the Dolphins, 17-16, in the AFC wild card game. Leading 16-3 in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs gave up two touchdowns, but were driving for a game-winning score when a questionable holding call brought back a long run by Christian Okoye. Nick Lowery’s 52-yard field goal attempt to win the game fell short.
Jan. 5, 1992- The Chiefs fall to Buffalo in a AFC Divisional Playoff, 37-14.
Jan. 5, 2001- Head coach Gunther Cunningham is fired.
Jan. 7, 1996- In bitterly cold conditions, the Chiefs fell flat, suffering an unfortunate upset loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Arrowhead Stadium, 10-7, and make an early exit from the playoffs. Kicker Lin Elliott missed a 42 yard field goal attempt in the final seconds of the game – his third miss of the day – that would have tied the score.
Jan. 8, 1987- Despite leading the Chiefs into the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, John Mackovic was fired. The move left a lot of people perplexed.
Jan. 8, 1994- AFC Wild Card game. A fourth-down touchdown pass from Joe Montana ties the game with 46 seconds left, and Nick Lowery hit a 32 yard field goal in overtime, as the Chiefs beat the Steelers at Arrowhead, 27-24.
