[Topeka Capital-Journal] Dick Vermeil can’t say for sure that Az-Zahir Hakim is the same player he coached when Hakim was the No. 3 receiver for the potent offense of the 1999 Super Bowl champion Rams.
But if Hakim is anywhere close, Vermeil said, he will have a role this season with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Vermeil, in confirming Tuesday that Hakim has agreed to join the Chiefs after his recent release by the Detroit Lions, says Hakim’s familiarity with the Chiefs’ offensive coaches, many of whom coached him in St. Louis, led him to accept what is believed to be a low-budget offer from Kansas City.
“He’s been coached by (offensive coordinator) Al Saunders at the wide receiver position, he’s played under me before, he knows our routine and how we do things,” Vermeil said.
