2005 Chiefs Mini-Camp

Finally, Saturday was here!

I had never been to one of these mini-camps and had been looking forward to this one for weeks! I had gone out and bought the appropriate sharpies and footballs for my kids (and an extra for me, of course) in case the players were signing autographs. I packed up a few ball cards and food, then proceeded to poke and prod my family trying to get them ready until is was finally time to go.

In spite of a few disappointments, it was a wonderful day.

Disappointment #1: I was unable to hook-up with any of my friends from chiefshuddle.com. I looked around diligently for the Chiefshuddle shirts but did not see even one. I was very disappointed that I wasn’t able to meet some of you.

Disappointment#2: I was also very disappointed after being told that the Chiefs players were not signing autographs. (A few of them did, for the lucky kids sitting in the first couple of rows. I’m not complaining mind you, just envying those that were in the front of the line. Trent Green, Tony Richardson, (and later) Sammy Knight and a couple of others spent time signing whatever was handed to them.

Disappointment #3: After the Chiefs began to scrimmage, we all held our breath as we watched Julian Battle being carted off of the field for an unknown injury. Julian Battle had just taken over in a Safety position next to Sammy Knight, and they were looking pretty good out there. Of course we all know now that Julian is likely done for the season with an Achilles-type injury. We wish him our best. Speaking of looking good… I know this was just a huge game of two-hand touch but it was enough for me to see that Patrick Surtain is nothing if not aggressive and was in the middle of most every play. Also, I don’t care what people say, Sammy Knight doesn’t look slow to me! Derrick Johnson was there out there looking good and Boomer Grigsby had the crowd (at least the ones in my area) on their feet cheering. Todd Collins was acting as QB but there were one or two plays where I had to look at him very closely, because he seems too be taking on a lot of Trent Green’s qualities! There were flashes of near brilliance from young WR Nathanial Curry and WR Sammie Parker was looking as if that starting WR position were already his. (By the way – Welcome to Kansas City Freddie Mitchell!) The kickers were also active, practicing their kicks while Dante Hall was putting on a show for the kids.

Tony Richardson was good enough to bring his own young boy, and although the decision had been made for him not to throw, Trent Green was still there for the warm up. He also did one of the things that he does best, wow the crowd! Because, as we all know, Kansas City loves Trent Green!

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you about every person there, as they were all playing at opposite sides of the field until the actual scrimmage started but I’ve been ready for some football since the following Monday of the final game of the season. I finally got my fix on Saturday though! In spite of the fact that it was a watered-down version of a real football game (league rules for mini-camps) I think we all saw enough to realize that the defending number one offense of the NFL is still going strong and that our new Defense is… Shall we say, READY TO PLAY SOME FOOTBALL!
