[Kansas City.com] The Chiefs arrived at their summer home Wednesday in a familiar position: They were missing their No. 1 draft pick.
Linebacker Derrick Johnson was unsigned and, barring a last-minute agreement, will not be on the field when the Chiefs begin training camp this afternoon. Also unsigned were two other rookies, fourth-round wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe and sixth-round defensive end Khari Long.
That Johnson was a no-show wasn’t surprising. His agent, Vann McElroy, indicated earlier in the week that negotiations were progressing slowly.
Four of the Chiefs’ last six first-round draft picks were unsigned for the start of camp.
“I’ll worry about it a little bit more down the road if he doesn’t get here,” Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said.
Reached at his office, McElroy had little to say about his talks with the Chiefs.
“Nothing’s going on,” he said.
