Veterans Waiting to Take the Field

[Topeka Capital-Journal] Training camp may have gotten underway yesterday, but a handful of Chiefs are still waiting to take the field. Among players missing Thursday’s first workout were incumbent starting linebackers Scott Fujita and Shawn Barber.
Vermeil said he hoped to have Fujita, whose strong-side linebacker spot will be contested by Johnson when he finally signs, receive medical clearance in time for this afternoon’s first session in pads.
Other players hoping to get similar clearance were wide receivers Marc Boerigter and Chris Horn and linebacker Mike Maslowski, who is trying to come back from a career-threatening series of knee injuries.
“They’ll get an independent workout with our trainers, and if they feel good after the workout, they should be cleared and on the field (today),” Vermeil said.
The exception is Barber, who isn’t expected to be available for camp. His starting weak-side job has been taken by Kendrell Bell, and Barber likely will open the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Veteran guard Will Shields went through only a light workout Thursday while resting a sore knee that kept him out of the spring conditioning sessions.
