[Topeka Capital-Journal] John Welbourn, who was the Chiefs’ starting right tackle until a knee injury ended his first season in Kansas city last year, worked for the first time at right guard this year.
With Pro Bowl right guard Will Shields still nursing a sore back, the Chiefs have worked several different players at the position. Welbourn is returning to the guard position he played throughout his five-year career in Philadelphia.
Receiver Freddie Mitchell, who has decided not to have the arthroscopic knee surgery that likely would have sidelined him for at least four weeks, likely will try to return to practice on Friday. Mitchell’s hope is that he can tough it out on a knee that may have a slight tear in the right miniscus.
Tight end Jason Dunn, who got a lot of reps as the No. 1 tight end when Tony Gonzalez was sidelined throughout the spring sessions, will himself be sidelined by back spasms that knocked him out of the Tuesday night workout.
Dunn probably won’t return to practice until early next week. Gonzalez is working again on a once-daily basis, and second-year player Kris Wilson is getting a load of practice snaps.
Defensive end Carlos Hall, acquired in an offseason trade with Tennessee, has been sidelined by an elbow tendon problem that limits his ability to use him arms in fighting through blocks.
