Week 14 @ Dallas Cowboys
Headline: Chiefs Pull-Off Comeback, Down Boys
After trailing by 20 points in the first half, Trent Green’s 13 yard touchdown pass to tight end Kris Wilson with 34 seconds left in the game capped the Chiefs comeback victory. The Cowboys were led by quarterback Drew Bledsoe who threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, but his two second half interceptions helped spark the Chiefs comeback. Trent Green was impressive, throwing for 292 yards and leading the Chiefs on three second half touchdown drives. Tony Gonzalez hauled in eight passes for 112 yards and running back Priest Holmes added 99 yards on the ground. With the win Kansas City improves to 10-3 and holds a one game lead over the Chargers in the AFC West.
Week 15 @ New York Giants
Headline: Giants Upset Chiefs in Wind & Rain
In the rain and wind at Giants Stadium, Chiefs kicker Lawrence Tynes missed a 41 yard field goal as time expired that would have sent the game to overtime. Instead, the Chiefs fell to the Giants, and now find themselves in a first-place tie with the Chargers in the AFC West.
Week 16 VS. San Diego Chargers
Headline: Best in the West!
The Chiefs wrapped up the AFC West crown with an impressive 27-17 victory over the San Diego Chargers before a raucous crowd at Arrowhead. Quarterback Trent Green hit Eddie Kennison for a 42 yard touchdown and running back Priest Holmes added 136 yards on the ground and two more scores. For the Chargers, Drew Brees went 17-33 with one touchdown and two interceptions, and the Chiefs defense held LaDainian Tomlinson to 47 yards rushing on 14 carries. With the win the Chiefs improved to 11-4 and clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming playoffs.
Week 17 VS. Cincinnati Bengals
Headline: Chiefs Kick Off the New Year with Win
The Chiefs scored on their first two possessions of the game to build what would prove to be an insurmountable lead in the rain and cold at Arrowhead. By halftime the temperature had fallen well below 0, and neither team could must much of an offense in the final 30 minutes. The Chiefs’ starters spent most of the game on the sideline, resting up for a playoff drive.
Awards & Honors
The Chiefs finish the season with a 12-4 record and win the AFC West title. Linebacker Derrick Johnson led the Chiefs with 93 tackles and is named the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year. Priest Holmes rushed for an NFL high 1,573 yards and is named the AFC Offensive Player of the Year and runner-up for the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. An NFL-high eight Chiefs are named to the Pro Bowl (Trent Green, Tony Gonzalez, Priest Holmes, Willie Roaf, Will Shields, Dante Hall, Patrick Surtain & Derrick Johnson).
