Divisional Playoff VS. San Diego Chargers

Headline: Chiefs Survive, Advance to Title Game

On an unseasonably warm day at Arrowhead, the Chiefs hung on to defeat the San Diego Chargers 27-24 and advanced to the AFC Championship Game. Trent Green threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Kansas City attack. The Chargers tied the game late in the 4th quarter on LaDainian Tomlinson’s second touchdown run of the game. But, Dante Hall returned the ensuing kickoff to the San Diego 42 yard line, and three completions later, Lawrence Tynes connected on a 37 yard field goal to give the Chiefs the win.

AFC Championship Game VS. Pittsburgh Steelers

Headline: Super Bowl Bound!

The Chiefs set the tone for the game on their first possession and didn’t let up until they had secured a dominating 31-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Chiefs marched 80 yards in 11 plays on the game’s opening drive, capped by a 16 yard touchdown pass from Trent Green to Tony Gonzalez. The Chiefs defense held the Steelers to 167 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers, the last of which was returned by Sammy Knight for a 77 yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Super Bowl XL VS. Atlanta Falcons

Headline: World Champions!

The Chiefs capped their terrific season by defeating the Atlanta Falcons 20-13 in Super Bowl XL. The Chiefs frustrated Michael Vick by picking him off twice and sacking him three times. Vick went 14-31 with one touchdown toss to Alge Crumpler. Kansas City countered with a 28 yard touchdown pass from Trent Green to Samie Parker. Trailing 10-7 early in the third quarter, Trent Green connected with Priest Holmes on a screen pass for a 44 yard touchdown that put the Chiefs up for good. Lawrence Tynes added two fourth quarter field goals and the defense held the Falcons scoreless on their final two possessions. Quarterback Trent Green was named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player.
