[New York Post] After seeing his airtime diminish year by year since he started on the NFL Today in 1998, Hall of Famer Marcus Allen is now out at CBS, NYP TV Sports has learned.
When CBS regained rights to the NFL, Allen was supposed to become a TV star. But, joined on the ill-conceived NFL Today set by Brent Jones, George Seifert and Jim Nantz, Allen never excelled.
Recognizing its error, CBS kept revamping the program until eventually settling on the strong team of Greg Gumbel, Boomer Esiason, Shannon Sharpe and Dan Marino.
In the process, CBS demoted Allen from analyst to reporter. Though very personable, Allen never could translate this side of himself on the air.
“We enjoyed working with one of football’s greatest stars,” a CBS spokesperson said.
