Chiefs Looking for First Win at Invesco

[Kansas City.com] The Chiefs haven’t won in Denver since 2000 and are 2-7 there since 1996. In the last four meetings at Invesco Field, the Broncos have averaged 217 rushing yards.

“I have a perfect record up there,” Vermeil said, “0 and 4. There’s only one way to go. We have to coach better and play better.”

Vermeil also knows the home team has won the seven of the last eight games in the series and that Denver has the best home record in the AFC since 1995.

Apparently, he isn’t sharing those numbers with the team.

“We’ve heard it’s ‘Monday Night Football’ and that it will be twice the intensity that Oakland was,” said rookie linebacker Boomer Grigsby. “Denver-Kansas City tends to be a little bigger of a rivalry than Oakland-Kansas City. The fact that it’s ‘Monday Night Football’ means it will be crazy. I’ve heard guys almost try to treat it as the playoffs. Everyone’s stronger, faster and tries to put on a show.”

On a long week when the numbers appear to be against them, Vermeil doesn’t want excuses. He’ll take a tip or two, though. For advice on how to win at Denver, the Chiefs may want to turn to defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. He won there in his two trips as a head coach in 1999 and 2000.
