Well I would like to thank the Denver Broncos for bringing the Chiefs down to earth with one gigantic jab to the jaw. A realistic Chief fan knew that it was just a matter of time until the Chiefs got a major wake up call, and to no one’s surprise it came in Denver. A two and zero start to the season had many Chiefs fans calling into sports radio shows spouting off about their Super Bowl plans they had for the Chiefs. After a Monday night woodshed beating at the hands of Denver, those Super Bowl plans being made by several Chiefs fans have been put on hold, and rightfully so.

There are one-sided victories, and then there are simply pure beatings. After a 30-10 loss, the Chiefs experienced a beating. Most people thought it would be a very close game, some even thought the Chiefs would lose, but I don’t think anyone would have picked the Broncos to win by such a score, or as easily as they did.

Right from the start it was obvious that this was not going to be as simple of a plan to figure out for the Chiefs as it was in their easy win over the Jets, or the tough win they got in Oakland against the Raiders. The Denver offense was not spectacular, but it was smooth, tough, and very efficient. The new and “improved” Chiefs defense was just plain worn down by the Denver attack, hitting them over and over, until the defense gave up enough to get the score against them.

Then there was the Denver defense that was fast, relentless, and a constant figure in the face of Chiefs quarterback Trent Green. Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson, the so called “two headed monster” running attack of the Chiefs just could not get anything going consistently through the entire game. Trent Green did not have enough time to set and throw very much at all, which caused several of his throws to either dip low, or sail over the head of their intended receivers. When Trent Green was able to get good throws off, he was not getting the greatest help from his receivers. Eddie Kennison had a very good game for the Chiefs, but second year receiver Samie Parker dropped the first three passes thrown his way, one in which he could have turned up field and ran for big yards, except for that little fact of needing the football in his hands to do it. All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez was in Denver, but contributed less than 30 receiving yards, not exactly what was needed on this night.

The offense was very ineffective all night long, but the defense was once again treated like the red headed stepchild of the Denver Broncos, beat over and over through the entire game by the Denver bootleg from quarterback Jake Plummer. On too many occasions the Chiefs bit on the bootleg and were burned for big yards by the Broncos, and when it was not the bootleg, then it was the running of Broncos running back Mike Anderson, if not the running game, then it was the passing of Jake Plummer to Denver receivers Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie. No matter the play or player the Broncos ran their plays with, it was going to work against that “ALL MIGHTY RE-WORKED CHIEFS DEFENSE.” It was a very embarrassing performance by a team looking to get back into the playoffs this season.

In my own eyes, the play on the field was bad enough, but there was something going on out there that really got under my skin, a lack of effort. The Chiefs never would, nor should they admit that there are any players on the team that does not go all out on every play from scrimmage. On this Monday night however, I saw what I call a lack of effort from several players through the night. There are many players I saw who were not going all out on every play, but for this game I’m going to look at just one, Samie Parker. Samie Parker is a very fast, and young wide receiver for the Chiefs, and he could become a very dangerous weapon when he gets more experience in the league. Last night though, Samie made several sad attempts to catch the first three balls to come his way. As I watched the ball bounce off Parker’s hands like a super ball off the concrete, I realized that this kid thinks an awful lot of himself, because instead of getting mad at himself, or talking to himself trying to get his head together, what does he do, he starts to walk back to the huddle with a smile on his face. What on earth he could be happy about I have no clue, but that got under my skin and made me long for coach Vermeil to bench Parker and give him a dose of reality.

This game is done and in the past, it’s time to move on and focus all of our attention on the defending NFC champions from Philadelphia. The Eagles come in with one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, one of the NFL’s best wide receivers, and one of the NFL’s best running backs. Will this game be easy? No way. Will or can the Chiefs re-group and dust themselves off enough to beat the Eagles? Indeed. Standing room only tickets are on sale for this game at Arrowhead, let’s use all the extra bodies we have in there to shake up Donovan and T.O. Be loud and be proud Chiefs fans.
