Illness Causes Sampson to Fall Behind

[Kansas City.com] When Kevin Sampson left for a trip home earlier this month, he was the Chiefs’ starting right tackle, a second-year player on the rise. Now Sampson is struggling to catch up after being hospitalized for severe dehydration.
“He may not regain his starting job,” coach Dick Vermeil said Wednesday.
“He’s struggling,” Vermeil said. “When you’ve missed all the work that he’s missed and you’re a young player, it takes a while to get back. And you don’t work that many days a week. It’s not like training camp where you’re going double days and you can catch up. It’s going to be tough for him to catch up.”
Sampson has practiced full speed this week but is working behind Jordan Black. In training camp, he beat out Black for the starting job. Then Sampson fell ill during the bye week and hasn’t been the same. He was hospitalized for nearly a week and didn’t participate in full team drills until this week.
