On a wacky week of wondering when, if, and where the Chiefs were going to play against the Miami Dolphins, the average fan would probably agree that the odds were very much against the Chiefs when the game actually happened. Traveling on the same day that they are playing was a first in the National Football League, and so little practice time during the week to get ready for the game were plenty of excuses for the Chiefs to use if they were to come into the game flat and out of it from the get go.
Thankfully, as we all know, this did not happen by a long shot.
The word domination is thrown around during games all the time, but when the Chiefs and Dolphins game began last Friday, the Chiefs opening drive was just that, total domination. The short intermediate passes from Trent Green to Tony Gonzalez and Priest Holmes were there again. Deep routes by Chris Horn, and sideline patterns by Eddie Kennison and Marc Boerigter were used effectively and often. Then there was also the mammoth running game the Chiefs provided on the evening, nearly 200 yards combined from Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. All these ingredients provided the Chiefs with the muscle to blast the Dolphins 30-20 for an important AFC victory.
While watching the game you could not help but realize just how much better the Chiefs were compared to the Dolphins. The Dolphins defense is better than the Chiefs defense, but only in terms of experience, the talent I believe falls to the side of the Chiefs. The other major parts to a successful football team heavily favored the Chiefs. The offense which is lead by a Pro Bowl quarterback in Trent Green, and has the major weapons in Pro Bowl running back Priest Holmes, Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez, and not to mention savvy vets like wide receivers Eddie Kennison and Marc Boerigter. A possible future Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson helps Priest balance out the slick running game he gave the Chiefs with a powerful smash mouth type ground game to go with it.
The other major part of the Chiefs is the special teams, which really stood out for the first time this season against the Dolphins. Everyone knows how dangerous return man Dante Hall can be at any time, but what most people outside of Kansas City did not know is that the Chiefs have a kicking game that is quickly becoming a major strength for the team. Place kicker Lawrence Tynes nailed a 30 plus yard field goal, along with career longs of 51 and 52 yards back to back. Tynes has only missed two field goals all year. The other part of the kicking game is punter Dustin Colquitt. The Chiefs 3rd round draft pick was a little bit of a reach according to several experts, but the Chiefs had their choice show everyone why he gave the Chiefs enough reasons to draft a punter in the 3rd round. Colquitt has boomed several deep kicks this year, and has shown the touch to pin teams deep in their own territory with some directional kicks as well. The Miami Dolphins just did not have enough answers for all the problems the Chiefs gave them. The Dolphins got off a couple big plays from the offensive side of the ball, but other than those, the Chiefs defense really held the Miami Dolphins in check all night long.
At 4-2, the Chiefs sit one half game back of the Denver Broncos for first place in the tough AFC West Division. If the Chiefs can duplicate the performance they gave this past Friday night, and repeat it over and over for the rest of the games on their schedule, they will find themselves in great shape, because there is not a team in the NFL the Chiefs can’t beat, if they play that way for the entire 60 minutes.
The Chiefs travel to San Diego this coming Sunday afternoon to go up against the best 3-4 team in the NFL. It’s always a close, tough battle in San Diego when the Chiefs go there, and there is no reason to expect any different this year. The Chiefs have a great idea of how to slow down the Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson and their tight end Antonio Gates by watching what the Philadelphia Eagles did to them this past Sunday. Whether or not the Chiefs can actually do this that is the major question that needs to be answered.
Go get them boys!!
