Chiefs Players of the Game: Chargers

Each week during the 2005 season I will choose an offensive, defensive and special teams player of the game. Here are my selections for the Chiefs after their loss in San Diego:

Offense: QB Trent Green

Mourning the loss of his father just three days earlier to a sudden and unexpected heart attack, quarterback Trent Green played his heart out on Sunday, because that’s what his father would have wanted. Too bad the Chiefs couldn’t do a better job of protecting him. The Chargers defense harassed Green all day, sacking him four times and hitting him on nearly ever pass attempt. Green finished the first half with just 35 yards passing, but he exploded in the second half for 312 of his season-high 347 yards, and helped rally the Chiefs to a near come-from-behind victory.

Defense: S Greg Wesley

Wesley finished the game with four tackles and three assists, and his third quarter interception and return that killed a Chargers potential scoring drive should have been a game-changing play. However, the Chiefs offense could not capitalize on the turnover.

Special Teams: KR/PR Dante Hall

Hall had both punt and kickoff returns of over 50 yards, setting the Chiefs offense up in great field position, but the fact that he was tackled from behind once, and by the kicker on the other long return put a bit of a damper on his big returns. For the game Hall averaged 18 yards on his three punt returns and 25.2 yards on his four kickoff returns.
