Surtain Practices, Safeties Don’t

[Kansas City.com] The Chiefs’ cornerback situation got considerably better Thursday as Patrick Surtain worked a normal practice.

The safeties are another story.

Starting free safety Greg Wesley didn’t practice Thursday because of a back injury, leaving the Chiefs with Sammy Knight and cornerback-turned-safety William Bartee. Backup Jerome Woods has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Buffalo because of a hamstring injury. If Wesley can’t go, another cornerback might be moving to safety.

Coach Dick Vermeil said backups Dewayne Washington and Dexter McCleon appear to be the most suitable candidates. McCleon has been out with a groin injury but is “close to being ready,” Vermeil said.

Surtain, a Pro Bowl corner who sat out last week with a knee injury, is operating at about 85 to 90 percent, Vermeil said.

“I think he’s more probable now,” Vermeil said.
