Chiefs Players of the Game: Bengals

Each week during the 2005 season I will choose an offensive, defensive and special teams player of the game. Here are my selections for the Chiefs after their victory over the Bengals in the season finale:
Offense: RB Larry Johnson
Johnson just continues to dominate, running through the Bengals defense for 201 yards and three touchdowns, while extending his franchise record for consecutive 100 yard rushing games to nine.
Johnson set a franchise record with 1,750 rushing yards this season, breaking the old mark of 1,615 set by Priest Holmes in 2003, despite not becoming the starter until November 6th. It was announced yesterday that Johnson’s teammates had voted him the team’s Most Valuable Player for 2005.
Defense: LB Derrick Johnson
Finding a defensive MVP was hard this week, and for once, not because no one deserved the award, but rather because the entire defense put together a great effort and there were many deserving players. But rookie linebacker Derrick Johnson turned in a little better performance than the rest of his pals on defense. Johnson led the team with six tackles and seemed to have an influence on just about every play.
Johnson was named the team’s Rookie of the Year yesterday after starting all sixteen games this season. He finished his rookie year with 95 tackles, second on the team.
Special Teams: K Lawrence Tynes
Lawrence Tynes connected on all three of his field goal attempts, from 39, 24 & 23 yards out to win this week’s special teams honors.
Tynes connected on 27 of 33 field goal attempts this season and converted 44 of 45 extra point attempts. He connected on three field goals of over 50 yards, including a career high 52 yarder against Miami.
