[KC Chiefs.com] Highlights from new Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards’ first press conference:

On the Chiefs current coaching staff:

“Obviously it’s a good staff. They won a lot of football games and (almost) had an opportunity to go to the playoffs this year. Obviously what I will have to do is interview every one of them. I will give everyone a chance to interview and that is the process that we will go through at this point as well as talking to the players. I haven’t talked to all the players yet. Obviously, I will have to do that also.”

On the Chiefs high-powered offense:

“I remember the last time I was here pretty good. The last time I checked I walked out there they beat us up Opening Day. Obviously, this offense has been prolific in the last three or four seasons. They can score points. I am not dumb. You don’t change things just to change. You don’t have to change. I think sometimes people would expect when a new coach comes in well he’s going to change this, he is going to change that. No, I am going to evaluate everything. Keep scoring 30 points I like that. That is a good thing. I haven’t been involved in that too much in my career.”

On his defensive philosophy:

“If you look at the playoffs obviously defense wins and it wins this time of the year. It’s cold and you have to play defense in this football league. It’s the old saying, ‘you throw to score, and you run the football to win.’ But if your going to win a championship you have got to have a great defense. There is no doubt about it. Last time I checked we are going to play defense because it’s important. I think especially in the National Football League in the months of November and December especially when you make it in the playoffs if you look at the teams that won three teams won on the road and what did they do. Play defense.”

On the Chiefs defense:

“I haven’t studied enough tape on the players but obviously they have some talented players. For me, defense is a mindset. It really is. It’s what you believe. You’ve got to have passion. You see, defense is easier to play than offense because you don’t play with the ball. That’s what’s great about defense. You don’t need a ball. When they hike the ball you get 11 guys running as fast as they can and they just try to take the ball and knock the guy carrying it down. But you’ve got to believe you’re going to do that. It’s not a one day thing; it’s an every day thing. Those guys have to believe that and I’ve got to help them believe that. That’s part of playing defense.”
