Harrington May be Headed to KC

[Kansas City.com] It looks like Joey Harrington’s days in Detroit are over. New Lions coach Rod Marinelli told reporters yesterday that Detroit was moving on without Harrington, even though the Lions haven’t officially made a move to get rid of him.

Harrington’s name will surely surface in Kansas City, where the Chiefs are in need of a back-up for starter Trent Green. The only other quarterbacks on the Chiefs roster are journeyman Damon Huard, and Casey Printers and James Kilian, who have yet to throw a single pass in the NFL.

The Chiefs, especially GM Carl Peterson, showed a strong interest in Harrington prior to the 2002 Draft. Although his career fizzled in Detroit, the 2001 Heisman Trophy Finalist could still develop into a solid pro with the right supporting cast.

Harrington is due a $4 million bonus in June and could be traded before this April’s draft. Peterson, in the past, hasn’t been one to give up draft picks very easily. But would he for a young quarterback who caught his eye four years ago?

For now, the Chiefs are staying mum about Harrington.

“At this point, he’s under contract,” Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said. “You never talk about guys under contract. You get into that, and you’re setting yourself up for a no-win situation. But, no, we haven’t really even talked about it.”
