Note: This is Part II of my annual “The Season to Be” series that is my attempt at predicting the outcomes of the Kansas City Chiefs games in 2006.
Week 6 @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Headline: Chiefs Upset Super Bowl Champs
The Chiefs upped their record to 4-1 with a 17-10 victory over the defending Super Bowl Champion Steelers. The Chiefs frustrated quarterback Ben Roethlisberger by picking him off twice and sacking him three times. Roethlisberger completed 14 of 31 passes with one touchdown toss to Hines Ward. Kansas City countered with a 96 yard kickoff return by Dante Hall. Trailing 10-7 early in the third quarter, Trent Green connected with Tony Gonzalez for a 22 yard touchdown to put the Chiefs ahead for good.
Week 7 VS. San Diego Chargers
Headline: Chiefs Defense Dominates Bolts
Phillip Rivers was sacked five times and threw three interceptions as the Chiefs romped San Diego 31-7. The Chiefs defense proved opportunistic, returning two of the interceptions for touchdowns, and setting up another score with their third pick of the day. Larry Johnson rushed for 123 yards and a score, while Trent Green connected on a 34 yard touchdown with wide receiver Samie Parker. The Chiefs defense was dominate all day long, holding the Chargers to 156 yards of total offense.
Week 8 VS. Seattle Seahawks
Headline: Chiefs Survive Seattle Attack
Shaun Alexander rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the Seahawks fell short 31-28 to the Kansas City Chiefs in a shootout at Arrowhead. The Chiefs run defense struggled to contain the defending league MVP, but the secondary stepped up against Matt Hasselbeck and company. Hasselbeck completed only 14 of 29 passes for 177 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Larry Johnson led the Chiefs with 105 yards and a score, but it was Eddie Kennison’s day, hauling in ten receptions for 117 yards and two scores in the Chiefs win.
Week 9 @ St. Louis Rams
Headline: Chiefs Down Rams, Win 6th Straight
The Chiefs cruised to their sixth straight victory with a 37-10 victory over the hapless St. Louis Rams. Larry Johnson gained a season-high 158 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns and quarterback Trent Green connected with tight end Tony Gonzalez for two touchdowns. The Chiefs defense continued their impressive play, forcing five turnovers and holding the Rams to 210 yards of total offense. With the win, the Chiefs improved to 7-1 and set alone atop the AFC West.
