Note: This is Part III of my annual “The Season to Be” series that is my attempt at predicting the outcomes of the Kansas City Chiefs games in 2006.

Week 10 @ Miami Dolphins

Headline: Chiefs Fall in Miami

Daunte Culpepper hit Chris Chambers for a 29 yard touchdown with 14 seconds left giving the Miami Dolphins a 24-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Chambers’ touchdown overshadowed a great performance by running back Larry Johnson who carried the ball 28 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Ronnie Brown led the Dolphins with 98 yards on the ground and one score. Lawrence Tynes missed a 43 yard field goal with 1:47 left that could have sealed a Chiefs victory, but the kick sailed wide right.

Week 11 VS. Oakland Raiders

Headline: Chiefs Survive Raider Attack

The Chiefs rediscovered their winning ways with a thrilling 24-21 overtime victory over the Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead. Aaron Brooks threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders, connecting with wide receiver Randy Moss for 111 of those yards and two scores. The Chiefs responded with a five yard touchdown run by Larry Johnson, a 17 yard touchdown pass to tight end Tony Gonzalez and a 46 yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Eddie Kennison. Oakland received the ball first in overtime, but Brooks threw his only pick of the game as Derrick Johnson returned the interception 16 yards to put the Chiefs at midfield. The Chiefs offense quickly moved into field goal range setting up Lawrence Tynes’ game winning field goal from 38 yards out.

Week 12 VS. Denver Broncos

Headline: Chiefs Dominate Broncos, Division Title Within Reach

The Chiefs defense was healthy and aggressive as they punished Denver quarterback Jake Plummer (6 sacks and 2 INT’s) in a convincing 30-7 win. Patrick Surtain returned an interception 14 yards for a score and defensive end Eric Hicks nailed Plummer in the end zone for a safety. Trent Green was his usual self, completing 24 of 34 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Larry Johnson chewed up the Denver defense with 127 yards on the ground. The win improves the Chiefs record to 9-2 and gives them a two game lead over the Broncos in the AFC West.

Week 13 @ Cleveland Browns

Headline: Chiefs Leave Cleveland with Ugly Win

The Chiefs felt fortunate to escape Cleveland with a 13-10 victory, in one of the ugliest games in recent memory. Quarterback Trent Green struggled all day, throwing two interceptions and getting sacked three times. The only bright spot for the Chiefs was running back Larry Johnson who rushed for 122 yards and scored the teams’ only touchdown. If the Chiefs offense was bad, then the Browns’ was terrible. Quarterback Charlie Frye threw four interceptions, the last one coming with 1:02 left in the game, sealing the Chiefs victory.
