Note: This is Part IV of my annual “The Season to Be” series that is my attempt at predicting the outcomes of the Kansas City Chiefs games in 2006.

Week 14 VS. Baltimore Ravens

Headline: Chiefs Rally from Huge Deficit, Down Ravens

After trailing by 20 points in the first half, Trent Green’s 8 yard touchdown pass to back-up running back Michael Bennett with 34 seconds left in the game, capped the Chiefs comeback victory. The Ravens were led by quarterback Steve McNair who threw for over 250 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions in the second half helped spark the Chiefs comeback. Trent Green was impressive, throwing for 298 yards and leading the Chiefs on three second half touchdown drives. Tony Gonzalez hauled in eight passes for 112 yards and running back Larry Johnson added 119 yards on the ground.

Week 15 @ San Diego Chargers

Headline: Chiefs Stumble in San Diego

Philip Rivers found tight end Antonio Gates in the back of the end zone with 1:40 left in the game to give the Chargers a 27-24 victory over the division leading Kansas City Chiefs. Rivers connected on 24 of 34 passes for 286 yards and two scores, while LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 104 yards and another score. Larry Johnson nearly carried the Chiefs to victory, rushing for 127 yards on 24 carries and scoring two touchdowns. The loss leaves the Chiefs with a 11-3 record and prevents them from wrapping up the AFC West title.

Week 16 @ Oakland Raiders

Headline: Merry Christmas, Chiefs Win AFC West

Chiefs running back Larry Johnson rushed for a game high 133 yards as the Chiefs defeated the Oakland Raiders 27-24 to wrap up the division title. The Chiefs defense forced three Oakland turnovers and held the Raiders offense to 68 yards rushing. The Raiders took a brief 24-20 lead on LaMont Jordan’s 4 yard touchdown run midway through the 4th quarter, but Dante Hall returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for the game winning score.

Week 17 VS. Jacksonville Jaguars

Headline: Chiefs End Regular Season on High Note

The Chiefs wrapped up the regular season with an impressive 27-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Arrowhead. Quarterback Trent Green hit Eddie Kennison for a 42 yard touchdown and running back Michael Bennett added 136 yards on the ground and two more scores. For the Jaguars, Byron Leftwich went 17 for 33 with one touchdown and two interceptions and the Chiefs defense held the Jaguars to a season low 46 yards rushing.

The Chiefs finish the season with an AFC best 13-3 record and win the AFC West title. Larry Johnson rushed for an NFL high 1,908 yards and was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Year and the NFL Player of the Year. An NFL high eight Chiefs are named to the Pro Bowl (Trent Green, Tony Gonzalez, Larry Johnson, Will Shields, Dante Hall, Brian Waters, Ty Law & Jared Allen).
