Fan Forums and Bumper Stickers

Here we are two weeks into the season and already Chiefs Nation is divided. On one hand we have those who are ready to pack in the season, call it quits, take our ball and go home. On the other hand we have those who stress patience, give it all some time, it’s just preseason.
Reading fan forums this time of year is almost as much fun as reading bumper stickers around election time. People are very clear about their views and there is no doubt whatsoever where sentiments and loyalties abide. I have read posts on forums which almost make my hair curl (if I actually had any, that is). I have read posts which are the epitome of reason and, for some reason, they are the ones being attacked.
Okay, take a deep breath, and repeat–It’s still the preseason, and only two games into it at that. Yes, our Chiefs have looked horrible in those two games. Yes, the offense defines offensive. Yes, the defense is just as offensive. Thank goodness we have a week to get our act together before the opener at Arrowhead this Saturday.
One thing that must be avoided is the bailing out on our team by those who CLAIM to be fans and who would be the first to return to the fold when the team starts doing well. I see a tremendous number of “experts” on these fan forums and they constantly tout their vast football knowledge and their disdain for those who just can’t see clearly that there should be no disagreement with their opinions.
Fan forums are wonderful places for people to discuss and exchange opinions and views on their teams. Forums are NOT the place to attack the team and act like your opinion is the only one that matters. Forums are wonderful places to see how fans from around the country view the team from their own perspective. Forums are NOT to attack those who simply express a different take on issues. I equate this with tearing off a bumper sticker just because you don’t like what it says.
Those who say our season is over, Herm is no good, the offense is destroyed, etc., seem almost hysterical in their posts. One can be critical and realistic about our problems on the team without going that far. Yes, I am as critical of our performances as anyone. I also remain loyal to the team. Let us not confuse loyalty to a team with attacking it when things don’t go well.
All of this extended verbiage comes down to this–Be loyal, be realistic, be hopeful, be honest. But do not attack.
