I notice that I have spent a lot of time this past week doing things that I haven’t done in about a year now. My co-workers are becoming increasingly amused at my showing them pictures of Arrowhead Stadium. Every day I will pull people into my office and show them pictures of Arrowhead full of grills and smoke. I will show them the stands packed and waiting for that magical moment when the thousands in unison sing “Home of the Chiefs”.
Every person with whom I come in contact knows where my seats are located (Section 233 by the way). My wife notices that I am becoming a tad bit anxious and checking days off of the calendar.
I was in my garage today inspecting the various items I take to the stadium on GAMEDAY–yes, that word is capitalized. My grill got a brief look-over to make sure that it is cleaned and ready for the chicken and ribs that will be cooked on it this Sunday. I reminded myself that I need to make a fresh batch of sweet-and-sour sauce before Sunday. The grocery list is being prepared and my dad is going to be here this weekend for the road trip.
Yes, Chiefs Fans, it is finally here–OPENING DAY! That day we have waited for, longed for, hoped for and anticipated now for a long nine months. After all of the agonizing during training camp about retirements–bye, Mr. Roaf–and our secondary–welcome, Mr. Law– and our offensive line–suit up if you are able–and our defensive line–suit up anyone capable of putting pressure on the quarterback–Opening Day is finally here.
After reading the fan forums and message boards for the past few weeks I hope that Herm Edwards gets the chance he deserves–the chance to either succeed or fail on the field–and to be given the entire season for this chance to develop. Not just one or two games but all sixteen. The man should be given at least that opportunity and he should be given the support of the fans as well, as should all 53 of the players who wear that arrowhead on their helmet.
Every season brings with it the hopes and expectations that THIS will be the year we finally do it again, THIS will be the year that Mr. Hunt holds aloft that trophy he so richly deserves, THIS will be the year that we beat the holy crap of the Raiders, the Broncos and the Chargers and every one else who lines up against us. For we are FANS, we are CHIEFS, we are ARROWHEAD.
Thank the football gods for Opening Day.
