[Topeka Capital-Journal] Offensive tackle John Welbourn, who served a six-game suspension for violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, is eligible to return to the team as of today.
The Chiefs will first ask for a two-week commissioner’s exemption during which Welbourn will not apply to their roster total. If granted, as the exemptions routinely are, Kansas City will have two weeks to decide whether they want to add Welbourn to the team.
Welbourn served a four-game suspension in 2005 for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. He retired in the offseason and will have to be reinstated to rejoin the Chiefs.
