The Season Finally Arrives!

Training camp has begun. My tickets have arrived. My Chiefs canopy was delivered this week (tailgating will be much more comfortable this year). My yard sign has been touched up and put out–hopefully to the annoyance of my neighbor who is a Cowboys fan. Life is good.

Or it would be if the focus could be simply on football. I, and other fans I am sure, are fed up, irritated and just damned mad at the stupidity and idiocy perpetrated by those who should just know better. When the only questions being asked should be concerning offensive linemen and starting quarterbacks, when the only questions should be on defensive schemes and special teams, we are bombarded by reminders that some people just don’t get it.

IT being that sometimes a player should be grateful that a team drafted him and that he is fortunate to have the opportunity to play in the NFL. But no, either on the bad advice of an agent or by his own miscalculations this absurdity called a “holdout” is commenced.

IT being that a contract should be honored and AFTER it expires then a new one can be negotiated. But no, either (again) on the bad advice of an agent or by his own miscalculations a player decides not to report.

IT being that no one is above the team and no one is able to do anything on his own but instead relies on the other players out there on the field.

I look forward so much to going to Arrowhead this year. I look forward to seeing the renovations and changes made to the stadium. I look forward to being with my dad on Sundays–grilling, watching the people, enjoying the atmosphere. I look forward to supporting my team–not cheering for a particular individual or a single player but supporting the TEAM. A concept, alas, that is lacking all too much among some athletes today.

Yes, life is good and football is finally here. I love the way everyone has an opinion on the team–whether it is a positive or negative opinion the fan has the passion and involvement. I will not even pretend to know who will be in what position or who will even be on the final roster. Whoever it is I will support the best I can because that is what they deserve as a Chief.

So, with that in mind, I will ignore Michael Vick. I will ignore the holdouts. I will ignore the arrests. Not because I will act like they don’t happen or that they are somehow unimportant. They are important, VERY important. I will just focus instead on the positives that are out there and they are FOOTBALL and the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS!
