The Warpath Fifty-Three

The Chiefs, like every other NFL team, cut their roster down to seventy-five players yesterday. That was the easy part. Now, the Chiefs have the really tough decisions to make in shedding the final twenty-two players to reach the league-mandated fifty-three man roster by 3 p.m. (CST) on Saturday.
But don’t worry, Warpath is here to aid coach Edwards and help him make the tough decisions. Many of you will likely disagree, we encourage that and hope to hear about it in the Chiefs Huddle Forum. Here then is a look at the roster, position by position, and what the Chiefs should look like on opening day.
SPECIAL TEAMS (4):
Kicker (1) – Justin Medlock
It will be interesting to see how quickly the Chiefs bring in another kicker if Medlock continues to struggle.
Punter (1) – Dustin Colquitt
Will this be the year he puts together a Pro Bowl caliber season?
Long Snapper (1) – Jean-Philippe Darche
The addition of Darche signaled the end for veteran long snapper and fan favorite Kendall Gammon.
Kick Returner/Punt Returner (1) – Eddie Drummond
Yes, he’s technically a wide receiver, but make no mistake, Drummond makes this team for his return abilities, not his route running.
OFFENSE (26):
Quarterback (3) – Damon Huard, Brodie Croyle & Casey Printers
Huard is the starter for now, but we will have to wait and see if he can hang on to the job for the entire season.
Running Back (5) – Larry Johnson, Michael Bennett, Kolby Smith, Kris Wilson & Boomer Grigsby
Grigsby makes the team more for his special teams contributions than for his play at fullback, which is still a work in progress. Too many fumbles cost Derrick Ross a roster spot.
Wide Receiver (6) – Eddie Kennison, Samie Parker, Dwayne Bowe, Chris Hannon, Jeff Webb & Ean Randolph
Parker will start for now, but Bowe should take over for him by week five.
Tight End (3) – Tony Gonzalez, Jason Dunn & Michael Allan
Allan, the Chiefs 7th round draft pick, has had an excellent camp.
Offensive Line (9) – Damion McIntosh, Brian Waters, Casey Wiegmann, John Welbourn, Chris Terry, Kyle Turley, Will Svitek, Tre Stallings & Herb Taylor
One of the biggest question marks heading into this season, can the offensive line overcome the loss of two All-Pro’s in the last two years?
DEFENSE (23):
Defensive Line (8) – Tamba Hali, Ron Edwards, Alfonso Boone, Jared Allen, Turk McBride, DeMarcus Tyler, James Reed & Jimmy Wilkerson
The defensive line has gotten a lot younger in recent years. Hopefully now they have the necessary depth to control the line of scrimmage.
Linebacker (6) – Derrick Johnson, Napoleon Harris, Donnie Edwards, Kendrell Bell, Keyaron Fox & William Kershaw
Johnson, Harris & Edwards give the Chiefs one of the fastest linebacker units in the NFL. Rich Scanlon could edge out Kershaw for the final spot.
Safety (4) – Bernard Pollard, Greg Wesley, Jarrad Page & Jon McGraw
Pollard & Page are both young and extremely talented, but both still make some crucial mistakes.
Cornerback (5) – Ty Law, Patrick Surtain, Benny Sapp, Dimitri Patterson & Tyron Brackenridge
Law & Surtain are still performing at a Pro Bowl level, good thing too, because their back-ups are inexperienced.
PRACTICE SQUAD (8):
WR – Brad Edwerekwu
DT – Patrice Majondo-Mwamba
T – James Newby
C – Rudy Niswanger
RB – Marcus O’Keith
CB – Will Poole
WR – Bobby Sippio
QB – Jeff Terrell
PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM (1):
RB – Priest Holmes
There you go coach, glad we could be of service. Good luck with the cuts.
