Well, here we are two weeks into the season and I feel in very familiar territory–the Chiefs 0-2 and waiting for a win. However, this year, unlike last year, I see no reason that we should not be 2-0. Our defense is much improved and has done a superb job under the circumstances. Admittedly, special teams could be more, well, special, both on coverage and on returns. That Devin Hester return was a heartbreaker and a half.
Watching our offense, though, reminds me of the Pink Floyd song from “The Wall”–”Hello, Hello, is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me…” There has got to be a better way for these coaches to earn their pay than to be so unimaginative as they have been so far. And please don’t get me started on Larry “I am not in game shape” Johnson. The guy signs for umpteen million dollars and carries 15 times a game?! This is nothing but an insult to the loyal fans who pay the salaries of the players and coaches through ever-rising ticket prices, not to mention concessions and parking. GET OUT THERE AND EARN YOUR MONEY, LARRY.
Of course, when I checked the standings this morning I felt the Earth shift on its axis. Detroit at 2-0? Houston at 2-0? Cleveland putting up 51 on the Bengals? (Have to admit that one felt VERY good, though). As REM stated, “It’s the end of the world as we know it…”
Undoubtedly, some of these teams enjoying such early success will be brought down to Earth soon, just as those on the other end will start getting their act together.
Which brings me back to coaching. Coaching is all about making adjustments, both during a game and during the week at practice. At the moment I don’t see that happening. Gunther Cunningham has the defense playing well and consistent–Keep on Rockin’. However, Mike Solari and the offense have not shown me the ability or desire to do whatever necessary to get things straightened out. Yes, we outgained Chicago. But we also shot ourselves in the foot, both feet actually, several times.
Get Johnson the ball and make him earn his money. Be creative and quit being apprehensive with play calling. Never go into a game or a play thinking “I hope this works”. The mentality should be “This WILL work”. I just see so much doubt and hesitancy with our offense. Of course, knowing our head coach, the mentality of NOT scoring points is almost too obvious. I just can’t stress the feelings of the fans enough–We are the CHIEFS and we just don’t play this way.
I will be at Arrowhead this Sunday against the Vikings, and all other home games as well. Herm Edwards and the other coaches need to realize that the same fans who cheer can also voice their displeasure just as loudly. Accountability, pure and simple. We, the fans, deserve better and we demand it.
