Chiefs to Meet with Hartwig

March 16th, 2008 @ 11:32 pm; ChiefsWarpath.com

[Kansas City.com] The Chiefs were expecting to meet with free-agent center Justin Hartwig, who played at the University of Kansas, on Sunday.

Hartwig has played six seasons in the NFL. Four years were with Tennessee and two with Carolina.

Drafted by the Titans in the sixth round in 2002, Hartwig was a starter in four seasons. He was a reserve as a rookie in 2002 and missed most of the 2006 season because of a groin injury.

The Panthers released Hartwig, 29, last week.

  1. Depth Depth Depth. Rudy Niswanger is not a starting center and I don’t want to move Brian Water from his current position . It would be like asking Tony G. to play running back. He probably could but it would get ugly quick. We will draft at least 3 offensive linemen and all of them should be competitors for a starting position. Drafting for a starting center is probably as hard as drafting for a quarterback. If everything starts in the trenches and the quarterback of the trench is the center he is the true football leader of the team. Hartwig is decent, but not a long term prospect. We need to draft at every position on the offensive line and pick up a few undrafted players. Out of five or six players at least two should be able to start in September. It is a long shot, but it may be our only shot.

  5. Hope the chiefs do some nice things in the draft for the lack of moves in free agency.
