Cunningham to Coach Linebackers

Cunningham to Coach Linebackers

March 24th, 2008 @ 9:57 pm; ChiefsWarpath.com

[Kansas City.com] Gunther Cunningham determined his involvement with the Chiefs as their defensive coordinator wasn’t enough.

So, with the blessing of coach Herm Edwards, he will coach the linebackers next season, replacing Don Blackmon. Cunningham will remain as coordinator.

Edwards indicated that the play of their linebackers wasn’t always what the Chiefs wanted last season.

“For what we want to do, we have to be sounder there,” Edwards said. “We have to become more fundamentally sound there. We have to understand our roles better. This defense is built around those guys, the linebackers.

Cunningham also coached linebackers for the Chiefs in 1997, when he was also their coordinator. He also has been a linebackers coach for Oakland and Tennessee.

  2. In the recent press conference, Herm seemed to say he wouldn’t allow Gunter to be on the sideline, even if he wanted to. Apparently he’s too foul mouthed and intense for Herm on gameday. Am I the only one who thinks a little fire and intensity might be a good thing for our team?

Oh how i wish Herm would retire to his fridge full of fig newtons… or better yet, can we trade him to one of our division rivals so he can run them into the ground?

  4. Isn’t it sad that the chiefs have nothing to report on at all. I have always thought this was a very exciting time of year with free agency and positioning for the draft, and here the team I love is uneventful. I guess the organization is happy with last years results.
