Chiefs Appear Set to Trade Allen

Chiefs Appear Set to Trade Allen

April 17th, 2008 @ 12:37 pm; ChiefsWarpath.com

[FOX Sports] Jared Allen’s days with the Chiefs appear to be numbered.

Allen, the NFL’s reigning sack leader, told FOXSports.com that the Vikings and Buccaneers have held trade talks with the Chiefs and he anticipates a deal will get done prior to next week’s draft.

“It’s a situation that works out best for both sides,” Allen told FOXSports.com. “I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now. The Chiefs can get valuable draft picks to rebuild with.”

Allen said he is flying to Minnesota and has a visit set up with the Vikings by this weekend. He is tentatively scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay next week. The Jacksonville Jaguars had previously inquired with Allen’s camp as well.

Allen said the two sticking points are working out terms of a deal with a new team and the Chiefs agreeing to compensation for a trade. A package of first- and second-round picks or one of first- and third-round picks in the upcoming draft have been discussed as possible terms. It’s unclear at this point what it will take to get the deal done.

  2. this is a stupid stupid move by carl peterson trading your best defensive player

    Comment by jeremy — April 17, 2008 @ 12:51 pm

  3. Why in the hell would ol’ Herm stress that defense is the strength of his team, then trade his best player because King Carl is to cheap? They will be kicking themselves in the a** just like they were when they traded Edwards the first time. This might be the last straw for alot of fans that are sick of this stupid crap. i for one think there will be alot of empty seats if this deal goes through…

  4. Wow. If this is real, even I, one of the biggest Herm critics, is surprised at his crapulence. Just when i thought he couldn’t get any worse. Blame Carl all you want, but don’t tell me Herm doesn’t have a big say in this.

Maybe we’re going after the Florida Marlins or Pittsburgh Pirates model. Collect more in revenue sharing than you actually spend total? Easy way to guarantee profits while giving a big middle finger to the fan base. Who cares if they show up in KC, right? They still get significant revenue sharing.

I wonder what former Jet we’ll replace him with….

I don’t care if we got 2 1st round picks for him. What’s the chances of either of them being as good as Allen already has proven to be? He’s much better than Hali and Simms, two recent 1st round DL picks.

How does the rookie pool work with traded picks? Will we even have enough in the pool to get ~12 picks signed, with 4 of them being 1st-2nd rounders?

  5. Maybe they’re planning on going to the 3-4 and drafting Gholston.

  7. Allen probably would of played only one more year in KC anyway. If we can get a 1st and 3rd rounder for him in the upcoming draft that would be great. Use the 5th pick to get the best available player, then the other first rounder to draft a OL.

    Comment by Jay B. — April 17, 2008 @ 2:17 pm

  8. This does not suprise me. Peterson is cheap. It will be a long time before the Chiefs get out of this hole. Peterson needs to be fired!!!!! I see the Chiefs trading down in the draft cause they dont want to pay the money required for the 5th pick in the draft. What a joke the Chiefs have become.

  15. I just emailed this to kcchiefs.com. Maybe we need to flood that email and let them know what we think.

Ill tell you what, If you trade Allen, that may be the staw the broke the camels back. I’m a lifelong fan here and what you guys are doing to this team is making me ill. Carl and Herm need to stop killing this team. How many more scrubs can we sign that cant make any other teams. Now your going to trade our heart and soul. Unreal. Carl and Herm, go read some of the blogs and see what the true fans think. Its scary. We dont want to here any complaints when you are looking at an empty Arrowhead. Or will it be called that or are you selling the stadium also. What a shame. Chris Cason

    Comment by CCason — April 17, 2008 @ 3:54 pm

  16. Lets go Carl, lets go whoo whoo. This is ripping you guys apart isn’t it? Where is your loyalty? Doesn’t Kansas City have a soccer team that plays at Arrowhead? Go Wizards Go.

  17. If this goes through then its official…CARL PETERSON IS THE BIGGEST IDIOT ON THE PLANET!!!!!!!

    Comment by John — April 17, 2008 @ 4:15 pm

  18. I´m a KC Chiefs fan from Mexico. I think that the current administration is killing this team, we CANT LET GO one of our best players of the decade. This franchise cant do this, we are going in the wrong direction, open you eyes. If Herm want Allen he needs to say something, otherwise our “coach” is behind this. Im really sorry to read this kind of news, and i only hope that mMrty returns as Head Coach and GM

    Comment by Ulises Harada — April 17, 2008 @ 4:21 pm

  19. I was some what okay this off season with the exception of not getting a offensive free agent, the loss of sapp bugged me, picking up two full backs, getting rid of Wiegman, not getting a back up QB like Byron who at the slightest would have been a good 2nd string QB seeing how chances are that Croyle will be crippled within the first 6 games as our O-Line is mere crap and the fact that I was just beginning to try and get over that sour taste in my mouth from past season (not to mention a few more things). Allen being traded would be like trading DT! Insane and I have been going over this madly in my mind trying to see a slim positive of this and haven’t found a single one. I believe if this falls through, then the seats will and should be half full if that. I realize that if by a grace of GOD the Chiefs were to have a great record this up coming season that it might be easier to eat a few of our words, but ALLEN would still come up as possibly one of craziest and most idiotic moves in history. That is basing everything that Allen has done for the D. I can’t see anything positive thus far this off season and the Allen thing may very well be the one that sets me apart from the remaining fans and make me start laughing with those that laugh at them. Hard to swallow! Lets face one other fact…they are talking about trading Allen to Vikings and/or Bucs? Both of those teams drafts aren’t that low, so it makes it even more silly to even try and comprehend!

    Comment by Ballinger — April 17, 2008 @ 4:25 pm

  20. Lets face it allen is about as good as he is going to get, and now would be the best time to trade him. and if i remember right hasnt allen been tryin to do this for a few seasons now? if he doesnt want to be there, trade him.

This might be how the chiefs plan to get a few more starters out of this draft, which is what we need. and who’s to say we dont get another good DE in this draft. it could be 12 picks now and every one of them better count, or this organiztion will be doomed for years to come.

  21. carl is the dumbest guy ever he should be compared to mike brown from cincy you see where they are at and how long they have been there

    Comment by john peeps — April 17, 2008 @ 4:52 pm

  22. This is complete INSANINTY the best hardest working player on the team and your going to trade him? Peterson and Edwards ought to seriously evaluated and then committed! 30 years a chiefs fan could be coming to end for me!

    Comment by angryashell — April 17, 2008 @ 4:55 pm

  23. its like i have said all along………..peterson and edwards needs to go. it appears that peterson knows he will not have a job after this next season and wants the chiefs to be in a horrible position when he leaves. if clark does not fire him, then it shows me that clark does not want a team that is competitave!! i have said that the kc chiefs will not win a super bowl until the current ownership sells the team!! a new owner would be hungry and do all he can to make a champion, just look at the not distant past!! but one thing that all chief fans could do is mail some of their chiefs gear back to arrowhead addressed to clark hunt and tell him that you are resigning as a chiefs fan. maybe then he will get the picture! carl will use the excuse that the stadium is going under renovations and that is the reason the seats are empty!! just wait and see. BOY AM I GLAD I GAVE UP MY SEASON TICKETS!!!!!

    Comment by DENNIS — April 17, 2008 @ 4:58 pm

  24. you gotta love elway7…….but he is a little misplaced. he mistakes the chiefs website with a donkeys website. let me remind him that denver let elam go. a guy that won at least 30% of denvers games last year!! talk about bonehead moves!! and shanahan is a little on tilt right now.

    Comment by DENNIS — April 17, 2008 @ 5:10 pm

  25. Go Carl and Herm whoo whoo thats the way to destroy a franchise. How many season tickets will now be sold? 1 less with meif this goes through. I have been kicked in the sack once two many with Herm. I opposed his hiring, I opposed his team ideas, and I oppose what he is doing. I hope Jared leaves to a team then lights the sh#it out of the Chiefs. THEN MAYBE ALL YOU OUT THERE THAT BELIEVES IN HERM SEE THE LIGHT.

    Comment by Dave — April 17, 2008 @ 5:20 pm

  26. Brilliant Carl. Trade him to Tampa Bay so he can come back in November and put Broadie on the sideline for the rest of the season. (That is, if he is not already there.) Picture the mental image on Allen going up against our O-Line….MASSIVE CARNAGE WILL ENSUE!!!

Here you have a guy that did not step on the field until week 3 and ended up leading the league in sacks. Where is the thought process in trading him?

Heres a hint for Carl and Herm…GIVE ALLEN WHATEVER HE WANTS AND QUIT SIGNING EVERYONE ELSES PRACTICE TEAM CAST OFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Comment by John — April 17, 2008 @ 5:23 pm

  27. Carl Peterson isn’t the problem with the Chiefs. It’s time to stop blaming him for everything and start pointing the finger at the Hunt family. Clark Hunt needs to step up to the plate and accept responsibility for this mess and stop letting King Carl & Herm take all the bullets. P.S. All you clowns braggin’ about giving up your season tickets. You’re either with us or against us. CHIEFS FAN 4 LIFE!!!

  31. ESPN paints a slightly less bleak picture, insinuating that most of this is driven by Allen who isn’t currently a signed player so can go visit who he wants. Perhaps this is partially just his leverage in the current long-term contract negotiations.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3351406

Heck, if I were a good team with a low draft pick this year, i’d even consider signing him away from the Chiefs even as their franchise player. Apparently you have to give up 2 first round draft picks to do that, but if you’re around pick ~30, and expect to be there next year, why the heck not? You really think two #30 picks equal one Jared Allen? I’d naively guess that in the vast majority of cases you’d be better off with Allen + a free agent than two #30’s. Sure, it might cost a bit more, but first round picks cost a good amount of money too and might end up being a bust. Of course Allen is older, but as a DLineman, potentially has many more years ahead of him (think Strahan, White, etc).

Anyway, no matter how ‘good’ a deal the Chiefs get, I don’t see how you can trade away such an icon and the best defensive player we have. Do they not care about the fans at all? Shouldn’t that be at least a small consideration on their part?

    I think i might be sick…

    Comment by Connie C — April 17, 2008 @ 6:19 pm

  33. If this happens, which goes down as the worst trade:

Jared Allen for mid-1st and mid-2nd

    or…

Trading a 4th round pick for Herm Edwards!!! Can you believe we actually did that in ‘06?!?!? I knew he sucked, but who knew he was THIS bad.

  35. This is a good idea. Jared may just keep himself alcohol free until he get another long term deal and then the problems would start right back up. Let him be another teams headache. Jared is good but his alcohol problems overshadows that. I would take a 1st and 3rd round pick anyday for an alcoholic. If he turns out to be another Chris Carter then I take everything back. Until then, let him go. Players ususally under perform or get injured after signing a huge contract. Glad we got rid of Kendrell Bell and hopefully Patrick Surtain is next.

  37. Trade him to the Vikings! They are my favorite team; Chiefs are 2nd. Come to Minnesota.

  38. I “HAD” supported everything Herm has done until this point. I’m so sick to my stomach I don’t think I’ll even watch the chiefs play next year if the trade the heart and soul of our Defense. Herm you really let me down.

  39. I’m with so and so above, I give this a few more years of Carl Peterson and if I dont see what I want out of these drafts, I’m mailing Queen Carl all my KC attire and everything I own KC related to him with my own feces embedded in it!! What a horrible move for this organization. I don’t agree with it at all.

    Comment by Marques — April 17, 2008 @ 7:53 pm

  40. Hmmm, maybe L.A. will have a new franchise soon enough just in time for me to change teams since this one seems to just want to have the #1 pick every year.

    Comment by Marques — April 17, 2008 @ 7:55 pm

  41. Well, this tops the charts of the most assanign move made by the Chiefs organization. However, this is not purely at the fault the Chiefs by themselves because Jared doesn’t want to be here. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, that is the unfortunate truth. Jared Allen doesn’t want to be a Chief so “Whatta ya gonna do, Tony?”

    Comment by Argin Henry — April 17, 2008 @ 9:13 pm

  42. This is bad news but isn’t he franchised and anyone who would want him have to give us two first round picks. If we are rebuilding then this is a move that makes little sense screw the franchise and the fans a little more HERM PETERSON. HE says to CP, “Maybe we could unearth a rookie to fill that posistion”. CP says to HE “Yeah I can’t open my pocket book for anyone on the team ever oh I mean right now”. Hopefully Carl and Herm stand firm on two first round picks otherwise they can take my two middle fingers and sit on them!!!! (I like the draft more than the game right now so shoot me)

The only problem that I have with Herm is the attitude that we will find it in the draft. It’s really unbelievable that he’s been a head coach as long as he has and doesn’t know the words DRAFT BUST,and CAREER BUST

    Comment by RaiderSlayer — April 17, 2008 @ 9:48 pm

  43. Apparently having 8-9 rookies starting for us this year wasn’t enough. Only way to fix that is to trade our best defensive player and ‘waalaa’, another place for a rookie! Whohhoooo.

Maybe we can just draft an entire college team.

    Comment by VLTC — April 17, 2008 @ 10:24 pm

  44. Can somebody tell me why there is a loser Seahawks fan (Blue Pride) always commenting on here? I guess he’s still carrying around anger after the Chiefs molested Seattle for all those years when the Seachickens were the losers of the AFC West. Go get on your own site Seachicken. Your team isn’t even in the AFC anymore, can you say obsessed?

    Comment by Chief Tom — April 17, 2008 @ 10:40 pm

  45. I’m so dissapointed… but if they do trade Jared, which I think it’s a mistake we may have a chance at Chris Long!!!! and he’s by far the best player of the draft… and then we’ll have another 1st round pick and then an additional 2nd round pick…

Guys it’s probably not as bad as it looks… but I do love Jared… last season his sacks are what kept me watching… (as well as the $300 I paid for the Sunday Ticket lol)

    Comment by Hubert — April 17, 2008 @ 10:55 pm

  46. I cannot believe this could possible happen, and until it happens, I will not believe it! Why would the Chiefs let the best thing they have going defensively since DT get away, can anyone annswer me that? I do not care how unhappy Jared Allen claims to be, if the Chiefs show him the money, he will shut up and fast!

I will say this though, I said it before in regards to other issues, I am in full agreement with what other people have said about King Carl Peterson and Herman Edwards, both need to go! I will be willing to lay money that the Chiefs will not win a playoff game with Herm Edwards as Head Coach and will never make the SuperBowl with King Carl as the GM…any takers?

    Comment by Mike N — April 17, 2008 @ 10:58 pm

  47. I am a diehard Chiefs fan from mid-mo and I loathe the Rams and their indoor venue. I was lucky enough to get to ONE game last year and it was that sorry-axx Chargers game. THE ONLY HIGHLITE WAS JARED ALLEN IN THE ENDZONE CATCHING HIS FIRST TOUCHDOWN!!

    WTF!!!!! THIS IS UNFATHOMABLE!!!

  48. Pretty sad what has been allowed to happen to the passionate fans of Kansas City for the past 18 years since Carl has been here.

This is pretty much a slap in the face.

Bring in Bill Cowher to clean up this mess.

  49. Well Herm and Carl supporters, have you seen the light yet? I know there is not many of you, but the few that remain have got to be convinced now!!! This current crop of Chiefs leaders have destroyed the team and now if they pull this off will have buried the fan base for good! I for one have been a fan since 1968 and was on the fence for whether or not I could even pull for them this year! But now I will be pulling for them to lose EVERY game this coming season! It is the only way to blow them all out and hopefully some of us will come back in the not too distant future! They are counting on the fans to be there regardless because of blind loyalty! Well, the people that will be at Arrowhead this season will be total idiots that simply have nothing better to do on Sundays than give their money to support a losing cause in both the short and long term. Rebuilding my A**! This is total destruction of a once proud franchise! Lamar Hunt, God rest your soul and be thankful that you don’t have to witness this! I mentioned in an article at the end of the season that the Chiefs had an opportunity to make the changes necessary to save the team and they ignored it! Now they have a fan base that is going, going, GONE! Let’s hope this website survives! But it relies on fans that have an interest in the team! The brass will spin it, but the former fans won’t buy it!! R.I.P.

    Comment by goldzone44 — April 18, 2008 @ 1:51 am

  50. Rebuilding huh? Jared Allen is young and if any of our “rookie starters” get good, they will want to go too. So they can “compete for a championship”, because lets face it, its gonna be a looooong time before we see our beloved Chiefs in a Super Bowl. An endless cycle of destruction. Carl and Herm need to go or I will become a New England fan. Why dont we trade Tony G over to the Pats so he has a chance to win the Super Bowl. I feel so sorry for Tony.

    Comment by Jones — April 18, 2008 @ 2:42 am

  51. Here we go again! Let’s see how many great players we can get rid of before the draft. Typical Carl. Why have the Hunt’s put so much stock into this guy in the last 5 years? Unbelieveable.

    Comment by Dom — April 18, 2008 @ 4:18 am

  52. I’m with Jones…Poor Tony–trade him too…What?!? I know… I never thought I’d utter those words…but he’ll never EVER get a chance at even SMELLING a playoff game again unless he sticks it out another 5-7 years. And then, why would D Bowe want to be here? Is this the 80s? Cuz it didn’t get better then until Will Shields and DT in ‘89. I have suffered a lot in the last 15 years, but this is INSANE to SLAP the BELOVED FANS in the face and take one of OUR precious few stars. And like HOSS is really old and over used or something…what a F#@$ing TRAGEDY!!! PLEASE KC HAVE A CARL PETERSON BOO-FEST AT AAROWHEAD THIS SEASON. AND MAYBE ONE FOR CLARK HUNT TOO. They’ll can Herm in a few years when we continue with our own demise, so don’t even bother…he’s just their bi#@h anyway.

    LAMAR!! We need you!!!

    Comment by Tammy H — April 18, 2008 @ 6:49 am

  53. Maybe Carl has a good plan here. He knows more than all of us. We fans are not on the inside of what is going on. Who knows whats really happening. Carl Peterson is committed to getting Kansas City a championship. He will do whatever he sees fit to do so. Herm is a futture Super Bowl champion coach and Carl will be right there beside him when we hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Jared is a good player, but rookies will build the team into a Super Bowl champion.

    Comment by Carlos — April 18, 2008 @ 8:08 am

  55. How did you people not see this coming? Jared Allen said at the end of the season that if the Chiefs Franchise Tag him that he is gone. And guess what we did………We F**kin Tagged Him!!! In my opinion the Chiefs are no better than the Royals now. We trade our best f**king players for money.

    Comment by VLTC — April 18, 2008 @ 9:05 am

  57. Anything less than a 1st AND a 2nd round pick would be a rip-off deal for KC. I think it’s a horrible travesty how the team has not pro-actively managed the issues it knew it had coming at the O-line position to put us where we are at - having to consider trading our best defensive player in order to fill the bazillion holes we have on the roster.

However, one thing that we fans seem to be forgetting a bit though - reality - this team has multiple needs at multiple positions - which requires multiple draft picks.

Prior to this year, Larry Johnson was thought to be Superman, until our two Pro Bowl offensive linemen retired with no replacements. If we end up say #18 on defense this year, but we end up protecting the man we thought was our best player and maybe developing a franchise QB (whether that’s Croyle or Matt Ryan or somebody else), we might get out of the crapper that was our 2007 season.

Big dollars paid to a single player might make for wonderful sack stats, but all those sacks did not equate to wins. If the boy wants $10-million per year to play DE and doesn’t want to play in KC, who’s to say KC isn’t right to allow Allen to pursue a deal to help the whole team versus just helping Jared Allen?

    Comment by Chiefs_Fan — April 18, 2008 @ 9:19 am

  58. we’re losing our BEST PLAYER! this shit is depressing he’s so young and really fuckin good now we’re trading him for some picks that MIGHT turn out to be good players

    Comment by mike — April 18, 2008 @ 9:21 am

  59. alright heres wat i think if the chiefs can get a 1st and a 2nd like they want i say why not look at what the cowboys did in the early ninties when they traded Herchel Walker the best player on the team and they got what they needed to take them to how ever many superbowls i say trade him now while he has value cause King Carl is not gonna sign him anyways then were gonna lose him and not get anything in return i say trade him and in the draft with the 5th pick get chris long or Vernon Gholston and with the other first round get Jeff Otah or Ryan Clady then with the second round pick get a corner or a reciver

    Comment by Fred — April 18, 2008 @ 10:06 am

  60. Sure the Walker thing worked out for the cowboys, but it’s easier to let go of RB’s who generally have shorter careers. Also, there are plenty of big trades that don’t work out. The Randy Moss trade didn’t work out for the Vikings. They got Harris and Williamson, neither of which is even with the team anymore (and we’re stuck with one of them!).

Also, Otah and Clady are very likely to be gone by the 17th or 20th pick we’d get for Allen this year.

Simple Fact: Even if we drafted a DE with both the 17th overall pick and the 2nd rounder we’d get, neither would probably ever lead the league in Sacks or be nearly as disruptive as Allen. We’d be lucky if both ended up as solid starters, much less a pro-bowler.

  61. hell if we want to trade away all of our good players and “rebuild” we might as well trade Derrick Johnson, Tony Gonzales and Larry Johnson(which i wouldn’t mind trading lj) this is rediculious. I will be done with the Kansas City Chiefs and Arrowhead if this happens

  62. Don’t worry Chief fans. This is probaly King Carl’s smoke screen for the draft. I’m Not sure what they really want, but not even Corkey would do this most stupid of stupid moves Carl has done. To think that Herm is behind this is also stupid. Herm IS Defense. And he knows what Jared Allen does for the team, in playing and leadership. Jared may not be happy with his contract and the way Carl is handeling it ( Typical King Carl screwing with the players head) But he has said many times that he loves K. C. and he even opened a new resturant there. So Mark my words, Jared Allen WILL be a Chief in 2008. And if not, Vrenon Golston…You better be one Mean S.O.B.

    Comment by Haley — April 18, 2008 @ 6:05 pm

  65. Wow! Did the owner of the Royals buy a share of the Chiefs. This looks just like the Royals model–develop good young talent, then trade them away. I know he is on his third strike (DUI’S), but he did lead the NFL in Sacks, didn’t he? This tells me they are drafting a DE with the 5th pick and will get a LT with which ever second first-round pick they get in the trade.

  66. This is not a bad move…you guys are f**kin nuts…If you read around there is also talk to get a first rounder this year AND next year for him…what would you think of that? 4 1st round picks in 2 years….i think we could build a team around that! Either way this is not bad decision, yeah its hard to see one of our best guys go but its for the good of the team as a whole. If we just gave him big money and he didn’t wanna stay he would end up like LJ…I think this is a good move by CP after learning his lesson with LJ.

  68. Youve got to be kidding! Why don’t we trade off Tony G. too, I’m sure we can get a couple draft picks for him too! And then, in a couple of yrs when Bowe becomes an unrestricted free agent and wants more money we can get a couple more top picks for him. Hell, we’ll just keep this team full of rookies, that way we’re young and don’t have to pay them too much. Oh, we’ll keep raiding everyone else’s practice squad for players who aren’t worth a damn though! I love the Chiefs but this is ridiculous! Carl Peterson must go, enough, Twenty years no Super Bowl what does it take?

IF YOU KNEW FOOTBALL, you would know you have to get young and stay young. Successful teams build through the draft.

All of you are the same people who are satisfied with what Dick did here. I am happy he led us to a great offense but he left us old and no playoff wins. Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Eagles, Packers, Giants, what do they all have in common????? THERE YOUNG and they built there teams through the DRAFT. And i’m sorry, how many superbowls have they combined for in the 2000 era??? So stay pessimistic fake Chief fans, and go root for the Broncos like Elway7.

  70. Rigga - “IF YOU KNEW FOOTBALL, you would know you have to get young and stay young. Successful teams build through the draft.” Allen IS YOUNG. He has been in the league for 4 yrs. If “YOU KNEW FOOTBALL” you would know this IS young for a DE. Herm and Carl have been saying the last couple of years you need a pass rush to help the corners out. Allen IS a pass rush. So lets get rid of a YOUNG guy and replace him with an UNKNOWN and see if we keep a pass rush. These other teams you mentioned picked up good players through free agency (not big name expensive players but proven good players for decent money)and the draft. So far I have not seen Carl do either one yet. They also sign their good young players to long term contracts - not call them pieces of S*@t and tell them they ain’t worth it. How much did the Chiefs have in salary cap room last year when we had huge holes in the offensive line? 15 - 25 million? I know it was enough to go get some good help. Lets just pocket the money and raise ticket prices so we can make even more.Get rid of both and bring Schott back!!!

Keep watching the news, there will be a breaking story that Allen is traded and Gunther has a massive heart attack. I was bummed to hear it may happen, but if your going to rebuild, you might as well do it right; with lots of picks. The true reason we are where we are is because we missed our window when Dick was here. We had the best offense and Dick kept his idiot buddy as the defensive coach. We had our chance, spent the money, brought in the right talent and missed. When that happens, you end up 4-12, old guys and we have to start over. The same thing happened to the faders, BUT if we end up with several losing seasons like they did, I’ll have to throw myself in front of a raider-bumperstickered car. Let us pray.

And you know it’s a sad state of affairs when I have to defend my comments on the Chiefs on a Chiefs website. I would expect this on a raider or bronco site but this is ridiculous. Bottom line is, you guys want the Chiefs to get every FA out there and the teams I mentioned before build through the draft, while picking up a FA or two when needed. We have the Broncos in our division and they pick up every FA imaginable, and they win nothing, you would think you idiots would know that. Keep bashing MY Chiefs and proving your loyalty. Thanks in advance.

    Comment by Rigga — April 19, 2008 @ 1:53 pm

  82. Rigga - for one thing - don’t start calling names. I am sure there are a few on this sight that might want to call you something. The reason Allen says he doesn’t want to be here is because Carl won’t give him a long term contract - FACT - he has said so himself. You keep saying these other teams build through the draft. Allen came from the draft - four years ago!! So do we draft players then trade them four years later? Name one team that has won anything that trades their best players that they draft four years later. If we trade the players every four years we will have a young team - thats a fact. We will also not win anything either - another fact. I have not “bashed” “YOUR” Chiefs. I have only complained of the bone headed decisions Carl has made and what he is thinking of doing. If Carl is so great where are any playoff wins at over the last 20 years he has been here? I hate the donkeys but if my memory is correct they have won many playoff games and superbowls since Carl has been in charge!!! These other teams don’t treat their players like crap and make everything difficult. They sign their good young players to long term contracts - the only thing that Jared Allen has asked for for two years.

P.S. You would not have to defend yourself if what you say makes any sense. Look at the Patriots superbowl teams - as many free agents as draftees. You say they are old now but they went 18-1 last year.

    Comment by Mike W — April 19, 2008 @ 5:13 pm

  83. Rigga - by the way - I am on your side about signing these high priced, big name players. I hate it. But - every good team finds good players for decent money that plays well with their system. I think that is what everybody is forgetting. The proven teams find good players that play great in their SYSTEM. Patriots and Colts have been excellent in picking up players in free agency and in the draft that fit their systems lately. The Chiefs higher ups have not done a very good job at this. The “O” line age and problems was known years ago but was not addressed. We spent big money on old has been players - Law, Surtain, Bell,… Allen on the other hand is neither old nor a has been.

    Comment by Mike W — April 19, 2008 @ 5:30 pm

  84. This is like if the new orleans saints got rid of reggie bush. Getting rid of of quality athlete for a chance at two quality athletes is primarily a business priority. I love Jared Allen but I would not go out and say he is the best just because he led the nfl in sacks for one year. Derrick Thomas was defensive nightmare jared allen does not compare to DT in any manner. DT could play out of position at defensive end and easily have as many sacks as Jared did in his four year drunken turned sober tenure with the Chiefs. I hate this as much as any of my fellow chiefs bleeders, but for the sake of the team this probably best. One man does not win games and it was great to see someone so defensive minded score two touchdowns but that is not how you when games thats just how you have fun. And I’m sorry if we don’t win, but I don’t care how many touchdowns and who scored them unless we get a check the W column. Besides Jared’s recent second coming of age he is an above average defensive end with a great motor that paid dividends in his fourth year. Jarad will never make the HOF and probably won’t make the pro bowl next year. He is a late round draft choice to begin with and gave us many good sacks for memory, but I am not sad to see him go if we can two or three guys as good or better.

    Comment by Jake — April 19, 2008 @ 5:39 pm

  85. “It’s obvious what the Niners really needed — a pass rush. That’s why coach Mike Nolan persuaded his front office to sign defensive end Justin Smith from the Bengals. Did the Niners overpay for Smith, who had just two sacks last season? Maybe so. But they had no choice. You can cover all day, but if you can’t rush the passer, you’re not going to win in today’s NFL. ”

This is from a story on ESPN’s website about overpaid corners. I think that says it all - sign a proven pass rusher, not trade him and lose your pass rush.

The New York Giants proved that. Did you watch their Super Bowl XLII victory over the New England Patriots ?

    Comment by Mike W — April 19, 2008 @ 6:00 pm

  86. Jake - I wish I could see the future like you. Sounds like Allen is already a has been. After all he is a late round (4th) draft pick. Wait a minute - what round was that one guy - you know - multiple superbowl winner and MVP - Tom Brady taken in? I am not saying Allen will make the HOF (doubt it) but he has plenty left in him and if you have seen him from his first year you would know this year was not a fluke.

  89. Another concern with Jared Allen is if he gets in trouble one more time, he would be suspended for an entire season. Maybe that is playing a part in the trades. I hate to see him go, but life will go on. We’ll have another Chief legend to cheer for and some day the football gods will shine upon us Chief fans. GO CHIEFS! Bring on the draft so we can talk about something new.

    Comment by Chief J — April 19, 2008 @ 9:49 pm

  90. This year was definately NOT a fluke. Jared has been playing great since year one and he has only gotten better. Anyone remember a Redskins game at Arrowhead a couple of years ago? He knew thier snap count better than thier own O-Line did. He spent that whole afternoon getting to the Q.B. before the ball did.

    Comment by John — April 19, 2008 @ 9:57 pm

  91. Jared Allen thinks he is above the team right now… Yes he led the league in sacks and that equated to a total of 4 wins, the money he is asking for this year could be much better spent replacing our O-line that is completely falling to pieces… I am a huge Jared Allen fan but lets face it, if he gets the money he is asking for then he will have to get 30+ sacks next season to make up for the O-line letting our starting QB get murdered…

Would I love to see Allen and Hali dominate Cutler, Russell and Rivers for years to come? Yes, but unlike many of you, I have faith in MY Chiefs organization and will remain optimistic. 99. Rigga - Patriots went to the superbowl last year - remember? Did they win - no - but they were 18-0 - UNDEFEATED before being upset. They were old and full of free agents. FACT!!!!!!!!!! How many and WHO were draftees? A majority (36 FA vs 24 Draft) were free agents. Like I said - they don’t spend huge money in free agency BUT THEY SIGN ALOT OF FREE AGENTS. They find good players without the big names and big money that play well in their system. Another fact - you keep saying the donkeys spend big and don’t win anything - they won 2 superbowls in the last 10 years. Cowboys won 3 in the last 15 years. Raiders at least went to a superbowl(03). Fact is you keep saying they use the draft and win young - Allen was drafted and he is only 26. I like what you say about the 04-05 pats - built through the draft with “KEY” additions. Have we made any key additions? Another thing is they have GOOD talent scouts. How often do we sign good free agents or draft well?

    Thanks Warpath -

Every player drafted that proves themselves will need to be paid. Im so excited about renewing my seasons. (not) The Chiefs have the money, its time for them to pay the fans back with some talent and a chance to go somewhere !!

    Comment by Daryle — April 21, 2008 @ 4:36 pm

  103. It is AMAZING to me. Rigga & now Mike says we need to build through the draft. Mike just stated “they are building through the draft and its working for them oh not to mention they also drafted Eli Manning the super bowl MVP”. Yes he was - in 2004. Jared Allen was DRAFTED by the Chiefs also. So what you are saying is they build through the draft and we need to also. I agree along with some good (not big name - big money) through free agency. BUT - you can’t draft somebody and as soon as he proves himself trade him. You say Manning was drafted and is now the Superbowl MVP - what would have happened if he was traded after three years? You HAVE to keep your good YOUNG poven players. We have not drafted good over the years and our free agency moves have cost big money. If we do it your way we need to trade Derrick Johnson, Larry Johnson, Tony G., Brian Waters, and every other good player we got so we can have an all star college team we don’t even know that can play in the NFL. Sign your good young talent, draft well, and stay away from big name - big money free agents. With the money they charge for tickets and parking they ain’t hurting for money. Use your salary cap (wisely - not putting the future in a hole). Carl doesn’t do that - we are always well below the cap. We could of signed Allen last year for less money. If you worry about his DUI’s then fix his contract to protect the team - but pay him and sign him.
The Giants also sign their good young talent - along with their old. Strahan played pretty darn good and he - a DE - is in his 16th year.

    Comment by Mike W — April 21, 2008 @ 6:58 pm

  104. O.K. Mike W, the Patriots were already a Dynasty that they BUILT THROUGH THE DRAFT. Then they added KEY FA. You cannot compare the Chiefs right now to the Pats anyway. Completely different league right now. We need to start over and maybe trading Jared “DUI” Allen may not be what we all want, but it might turn out to be a great move for this team. And as far as the Broncos, Cowboys and Raiders go, the Boys and the Raiders won there SB’s before the FA era so that isn’t even a valid argument against me and Denver did it in 97 and 98 when they BUILT THROUGH THE DRAFT. Remember Terrell Davis, Rod Smith, Shannon Sharpe, Tom Nalen, John Mobley and a young Jason Elam. THey were all DRAFTED by the Broncos and were the catalyst for there great run. Haven’t you learned from K. Bell, Surtain, Law, Shawn Barber, etc…. Get cheap FA and leave the expensive ones to Denver and the Boys.

  105. “The Chiefs’ acknowledgment of trade discussions suggests they might take less than two first-round picks. Allen has made it clear he won’t sign a long-term deal with the Chiefs. If that’s the case, the Chiefs would have to find a replacement, and now would be the time.” - John Clayton ESPN
