The Chiefs finished up the second day of the 2008 NFL Draft with five selections: CB Brandon Carr, OT Barry Richardson, WR Kevin Robinson, DE Brian Johnston and TE Mike Merritt.
Carr (6-0, 207) was a three-year starter and a two-year All-American for perennial Division II power Grand Valley State. He brought in 11 interceptions over the past three years and broke up another 37 passes during that time.
Richardson (6-7, 320) earned All-ACC first-team honors the last two seasons at Clemson where he started 45-of-49 games in which he appeared for the Tigers.
Robinson (6-0, 190) proved to be one of the most consistent big-play threats in the country during his four years at Utah St. where he became the NCAA career all-purpose yards per play record holder with a 16.16 average on 6,479 career yards in 401 plays.
In 42 games at Gardner-Webb, Johnston (6-5, 276) started 40 contests. He recorded 268 tackles (124 solo), 21 sacks for minus-140 yards and was credited with 69 quarterback pressures.
Merritt (6-3, 270) is a prototypical blocking tight end. He was used mostly in jumbo packages at Central Florida.

I put my 2 year old to bed tonight with his chiefs blanket and felt good about it. I am once again proud to be a chiefs fan. Great draft…

make no mistake about it, herm and carl had nothing to do with the fact that the players that they were able to get fell right into their laps. my 12 year old son could have selected the players that the chiefs did. dorsey still there at no. 5, wow a no brainer. herm and carl are still idiots and we will NEVER WIN no matter how our drafts go as long as they are in charge. yeah, i’ll sleep good tonight too because of our best draft in recent memory, but don’t go giving too much credit to the imbisiles who got us in the shape we are in, carl and herm.

we did get some good talent to bad there wasnt more o line men…but what about herms conservative play calling and predicablity. what can be done about that?
Comment by jc — April 27, 2008 @ 11:47 pm
yeah, yeah, yeah….. I’m starting to get real tired of all these “so called” fans that chose to do nothing but bitch about how horrible the chiefs are. nobody is making you cheer for the chiefs, so just change the channel to golf or tennis or something else.
what this organization needs the most is positivity for the future. you think its the GM thats loosing us games? hes not on the field is he? its our players, but after the draft they just got better.
this is not a new trend either, my entire family has always been chiefs fans, but i cant stand to watch games with them because even when they win they still did something wrong….. this is way to common amongst the fans in KC. trust me the players will play up to the level of the crowd, which somehow just hasnt been the same. next year Arrowhead needs to redeem itself as the loudest Stadium in the NFL.
Just remember that they have to win games, then that has to turn into winning playoff games, and then that has to turn into winning a SuperBowl. this shit wont just happen overnight. So keep your chins up because remember as of right now every team in the NFL is still 0-0.

You guys complaining are ridiculous! All the “sports critics” out there talked about how the Chiefs this year made the best draft decisions. (Believe me there usually is not much said positive about the Chiefs by these guys). Yet all you couch fans set there and say how you can do a better job. I’m not defending Herm or CP but I guarantee if you were that good you would be in the NFL getting paid what they get paid. You don’t! So sit down, calm down, and quit being a bunch of cry babies. Try and enjoy one of the best drafts we had in awhile. I don’t mind debating and giving critical points but damn I see some guys on here cry every chance they get. If you don’t want to be a fan, don’t be a fan. For the love of God don’t be a Chief’s fan….I don’t want you representing my team. Be a Donkey’s fan at least you will fit in with the crybabies over there!!

This draft was top heavy and turned out real good for the Chiefs! However, not selecting a Center was real questionable and in fact not spending at least two more selections on O linemen was also not wise! So as Chiefs fans let hold out hope, but remember that at least half will not pan out! Losing Allen and gaining Dorsey was probably a wash and saves the team some money initially, but I think scoring Albert was probably the biggest coup! (Remember Dorsey did have some injury issues). It boils down to game management and front office competance and we did nothing in the off season to address that! I think the draft may turn out OK as soon as Herm is gone!

I have been skeptical of Herm since he arrived, but I am a fan and have bit my tongue. We did need to get younger, but I was never sure if he was the guy to do it for us. My comments about the draft are fairly simple, we did great. Sure we could use some more O-line guys, and some other positions, but what teams doesn’t. What I was happiest about is that we did not draft a quarterback. Alot of people thought we would. Now I am am highly doubtful that Brody is our long term guy with all of his injuries, but drafting a qb in this draft would have been a waste. With the draft we had this year though, and the work that will be done in solidifying the O-line, perhaps next year will be the year to draft our franchise QB.

I wonder how much health insurance they carry on Larry Johnson, because they sure didn’t do much to help the boy out in the draft. Brendan Albert was a good pick in Round 1. Flowers was a good pick in Round 2. But where were their draft skills and talent experts in Rounds 3 and 4? We do have needs here gentlemen.
Comment by Chiefs_Fan — April 28, 2008 @ 8:13 am
I agree I’m tired of hearing people bitch too! We had a great draft, and most of these guys will probably start. I cant wait to see Dorsey trample some line men and smash the QB. You can say what you want about our leaders, but in the end do you stand by the team, or do you complain about everything that’s not in your view the right thing to do! I believe we will see this team win a SB within the next few years, we are on the right path!!! And at first I didn’t like trading Allen, but he didn’t want to be a Chief. Tony G was franchised and he came to camp played his but off, and they gave him his deal…that’s a Chief right there!!! I’m glad Allens gone. Let him go be a stinking Viking!!!!
Comment by Michael Raite — April 28, 2008 @ 9:08 am
fenwick,
How is the lack of youth and talent on Herm? Our drafts were forgotten due to everyone wanting to win quick when Dick Vermeil was coach. We picked up veterans and mostly ignored the draft. I did not hear anyone complaining during those years even though we knew they were not doing anything to get younger and that there would be a fall as soon as the older players left our retired. It was a win now situation which causes problems in the long term for the organization.
Comment by Mark — April 28, 2008 @ 9:14 am
We did help the offensive line by drafting 2 blocking TE. Don’t forget that we needed to replace Dunn, who was huge in our running game.
If you’re tired of complaints, quit posting complaints about complaints (although i’m doing that now to the third order!). Let there be an open dialog, good or bad, which is the point of a discussion section. If you want to just watch cheer leaders, go to kcchiefs.com

As I stated I don’t mind a discussion or even a few bad mouths here and there. What I’m tired of is the guys who constantly complain and think that every move is a move to the end of the team. I want to see critical views of what is happening, I don’t need to see the pessimistic views of a cry baby that thinks every decision is to our doom. What kind of discussion are you going to get when a guy sits and posts something like that on every article?

so just because a fan has a valid opinion about the coach and gm, a gm who for 20 years has promised to take us to the promise land and a coach who has failed everywhere he has been, we should look for another team. sure this was a great draft, nobody is debating that. the bottom line is our coach blows and so does carl peterson. they both need to go no matter how this draft went. i’m sick and tired of mediocrity which is what you so called true fans seem to accept and expect every year. i love the chiefs, have all my life but get realistic. if herm stays after next years 5 win season and c. hunt does’t get rid of peterson you can expect this draft to be for naught. get a real coach and a gm who isn’t afraid to spend a little money. so go ahead you suckass so called chief fans and keep filling arrowhead with loyal fans so that carl can continue to run this money making franchise into the ground even more.

I agree that i don’t want to see blind thoughtless comments repeatedly posted, whether good or bad. The fact is, there were 2 posts negative of Carl and/or Herm followed by ~5 posts complaining about the negativity. I think fenwicks post was fine, making a point that yes, the draft was good, but also expressing that it doesn’t matter when there are deeper problems in the organization (in some peoples opinion). Also, you can’t claim a “great draft” for 2-3 years until you know how these players pan out. All you can really say right now is that your team didn’t do anything too foolish on draft day. Yes our draft seems good, but its because we had a bunch of picks and didn’t reach or make questionable trades on draft day.
The other “negative” post (which first complimented the draft) went a little off topic to complain about Herm, but also expressed the valid opinion that we didn’t do enough to address the OLine, in their opinion.
I think it’s good dialog. The only posts i wanted to skim were the repeated complaints about negativity.
Maybe all the negativity is because of a real problem.

We won our first nine games in 2003 and we lost our last nine games in 2007. We have been average over the last decade no more and no less. I hate all these people saying we can’t win because of a coaches play calling. Why do you think we brought in Gailey it’s because he will call plays. Gunther is the new linebacker coach with talent and depth and a desire to sack from the edge. Having Dorsey as a real threat up the middle will improve the Defense five spots immediately compared to the past just because he rubs off on other players. He knows what it takes to win and personally I would rather have that than a son of a Hall of Famer. Yes Chris Long looked awesome on film but no guarantee of anything. Dorsey has won a championship more than anyone on the team now that screw off Ty Law is gone. That was Herm’s biggest mistake. Carl is an accommodating GM not necessarily a decider. Our defense will be solid and having an experience play caller will ensure a better offense especially since we have added talent. The problem last year was once people knew we would not make the playoffs there was no real point to win. The AFC west used to be a talented division but last year was evident that a lot of the plans each organization had did not work out. Experience is the biggest issue. And now we have one of the youngest teams if not the youngest. This does not automatically determine a losing season. Look at the Giants eight starters from last years draft and a ring to go with it. I just wish everyone would shut for now show up on Sundays and express your frustration on Sept 14 against the raiders and not just whine about having a good team. We have a great team and our defense could end up better than any of 90’s. Negativity only promotes more negativity.
Comment by Jake — April 28, 2008 @ 11:43 am
Good thought about the blocking TE. I am saddened that we didn’t do more to help our depth. Branden Albert cannot play both Guard and Tackle. And on the other side, can McIntosh play an actual whole season and is Svitek the solution if DM gets hurt? Assuming that free agent dude can cover the center spot, where does that leave us at the guard spot opposite Waters?
Hopefully LJ and Brodie have good massage therapists, because they appear to be in danger of some seriously sore Mondays.
Comment by Chiefs_Fan — April 28, 2008 @ 11:47 am
I think the organization envisions Niswanger starting this year, either at Center or RG depending on who shakes out as our best veteran pickup, which will also help determine where Albert plays.
I think if we started today, they would guess:
LT - Albert
LG - Waters
C - New guy
RG - Niswanger
RT - McIntosh
But who really knows at this point. The really scary thing is Herm said he’s going to move Boone to Left DE. That sounds crazy to me, but after losing Allen and Wilkerson, and Turk looking like a bust, i guess we have little choice.
Comment by VLTC — April 28, 2008 @ 12:16 pm
Hadn’t even considered Niswanger. Does he have any talent or are we hoping that Brodie and LJ can run “really fast” toward the left side of the line?
What do they have at LB to work with Boone on that side? Boone might be able to stuff the run and the LB can provide the pass rush?
Comment by Chiefs_Fan — April 28, 2008 @ 1:25 pm
Derrick Johnson is on left side Williams will be on the right with Edwards in the middle. I imagine an alternating line. It will confuse opposing offenses. Especially going against 1200 plus pounds at the line.

Can some of you with an open mind and an ability to constructively criticize please jump over to the Chris Leak article and help me out!!! I’m getting lambasted for having opinions that are an attempt to make us better, but I am getting nothing but blind Herm supporters that are pleased with the current state of the franchise! Open dialogue is the key! There are only about 40% of the people that are supporting Herm and Carl nationwide but you would’nt know it from the posts on that article!
