DL Derek Lokey
College: Texas
Height: 6-1
Weight: 293
Notes: Relentless with a non-stop motor, but does not have the size or bulk you look for in a defensive lineman. Was a two-year starter at Texas. Could transition to an NFL fullback.

QB Ricky Santos
College: New Hampshire
Height: 6-0
Weight: 209
Notes: Has decent mobility and is very accurate, but he did not play against big-time competition in college. Started four years at New Hampshire where he was named the top player in I-AA football in 2006.

  3. Derek Lokey could be a diamond for us at DT. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him line up next to Dorsey next year. Texas players are usually pro ready because of the talent they play against in practice.

  4. I believe we have signed a LB Steve Octavien from Nebraska and OL Jonny Dingle from West Virginia.

  5. Whats with not drafting a QB???????????

    Comment by Jerome — April 28, 2008 @ 7:29 pm

  6. I live in Nebraska, and hate them with a passion but Octavien was a name that was heard often, knows how to flow to the ball well and always seemed to be in position for a tackle, now that you bring him up i am suprised he wasn’t even in the 2nd round.

  9. Read up on the Mike Cox kid, he could be our new Boomer. He’s a true fullback- a rare find anymore, does little with the ball, but LOVES TO HIT PEOPLE!! I like it. We need a good bruiser back their next to Brodie and LJ.

  12. About the QB, at first, I too thought they should’ve taken one. But now that I have had time to go back and look at who was available and who is left, I think they did the right thing. There was only 4 taken in the 6th and 7th rounds and 13 in all. There are 10 left on the nfl.com’s board and we signed one (Santos) as a free agent. So we got one of them and didn’t even have to draft him. I am not a Croyle fan, but it is obvious that the Chiefs are set on giving him another chance with a better o-line. Hopefully, they will get another one of those free agents and open the “competition” again. Of all the picks we got, I don’t know which one I would’ve passed on for a QB (considering who was available when we picked them)–I like them all.

Looks like we did pretty good on undrafted free agents too! Some of those guys should have been drafted.

  15. Hey Michael,

You fail to remember that they picked up Tyler Thigpen on waivers from Minnesota last year… in my estimation, he’s just like selecting a second day QB. I too would have like them to take Brohm in the second round, but that would have been a reach and all the others would have been reaches in the following rounds. They are pretty high on Thigpen, along with many other analyst around the league. When all is considered, I think they did the right thing.

    Comment by Benjamin — April 29, 2008 @ 9:51 am

  16. It doesnt matter who they start at QB if the O line is not in shape. That goes for the running game as well. LJ and Croyle will get destroyed physicaly if we dont get the O line in working order. I for one want to see Croyle do well but I doubt he will get the chance if he is running for his life again.

    Comment by Rick — April 29, 2008 @ 10:41 am

  17. How about that draft! You’ve got Brandon, Branden, and his other brother Brandon. And Dorsey falling to us was awesome. As far as the QB situation, Croyle should have more help on the line, but they’ll be young. Hopefully Larry will produce better this year with a new line and fullback so there won’t be as many obvious passing downs.
The QB draft class will hopefully hold more promise next year and by then, we should have a better feel for Croyle!

    Comment by Grand Stumpy — April 29, 2008 @ 11:28 am

  18. would be great if the chiefs ended up with Chase Daniels, from Missouri in next years draft.

    Comment by KC111110 — April 29, 2008 @ 4:59 pm

  19. We don’t need a quarterback. Croyle is good he just needs people to block for him. I’ll support him, he has a rocket arm too. Thigpen is alright, he has good decision making but he doesn’t have a very strong arm..but to be honest I couldn’t throw any better so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Haha. Look at all these wide receivers…me like a lot!!!

    Comment by Josh — April 29, 2008 @ 6:15 pm

  20. Don’t worry about quarterbacks. Fans have not been given the proper opportunity to see what Croyle can do. He was put in an offense last year that allowed 55 sacks (tied for league high), had their #1 threat (LJ) hurt, and were trying to run a passing game with Eddie Kennison hurt, putting more pressure on Dwayne Bowe and Croyle. If we’re in a rebuilding season, then there is no time better than now to see what Croyle is capable of. He can throw it a country mile- let’s see if he can protect it as well. Don’t worry about next year’s draft class, until we’ve seen how this one performs. I don’t think that Herm and Chan Gailey would stake their jobs on a QB that didn’t have potential to manage the team.

    Comment by Sam Creagar — April 29, 2008 @ 6:16 pm

  21. What’s up with dumb fans in here always pissin’ and moanin’ because we didn’t get a QB??? Who cares!! Sit down, shut up, and relax!!! My God, you act like a QB is the ONLY thing we needed. My guess is you’re a closet Donkey’s fan trying to insinuate an argument amongst us. Go back to your Terrell Davis bobblehead dolls and indulge in that for a few.

    (Brushes the haters off) ;)

    GO CHIEFS!!!! A+ Draft!!!

    Comment by Marques — April 29, 2008 @ 6:58 pm

  22. Oh yeah, by the way. I don’t want any part of Chase Daniels unless we get him as a unsigned free agent after the draft. I want no part in a QB who reminds me of Eric Zeier in height.

    Comment by Marques — April 29, 2008 @ 7:00 pm

  23. I really like that we picked up Octavien. I grew up in Nebraska and over the last few years had an opportunity to go back home and watch him play. That guy was all over the field! He always seems to be in position to make a tackle. I’m surprised he didn’t get drafted, but good thing for the Chiefs he didn’t. He’s a hell of an athlete. Good pickup, Chiefs.

    Comment by SS — April 29, 2008 @ 7:24 pm

  24. OK Croyle may end up being the starting QB but what would it have hurt to take a QB? Andre Woodson threw 325 consecutive passes without an INT and before that he threw 125 without and INT all while in the SEC (one of the top conf. in college football if not the top). Oh and not to mention the 70 TDS to 18 picks, and to say drafting one of these QB’s would have been reaching everybody the Chiefs took after Jamal Charles is a reach. The Packers took two QBs and the guy they have ain’t too bad (make him earn it). The TE from Central FLA. Mike Meritt could have not been taken I’m quite sure he would have still been there after the draft, and even if he wasn’t Gonzalez has at least 2 more yrs. So instead of taking the TE. from Tenn. Brad Cottman with the 13th pick in the 3rd rd. They take a QB and with the last pick we take Meritt. They take all these RB’s and they already got two studs but that Ok and the questinoable QB they’ll give him the job…? Another guy that could have been left for free agency was the safety, DaJuan Morgan from UNC. (and if you didn’t know they have two of them that are pretty good as well), but don’t get me wrong I’m not saying these guys will suck I just feel that a signal caller was just abit more important than a TE. or a S.

    Comment by Jerome — April 29, 2008 @ 7:49 pm

  25. I also feel that Andre woodson wood have been a great pick I was waiting and hoping. Sixth round, come on that guy did alot with little. I like the first three picks I but after that I think most of those guys wood have fallen. J. Charles we have LJ and Kolby Smith. There where still good corners and possible line men not to mention Andre Woodson.

  26. Everybody has cried and moaned we have made no attempt to change the team. Well here you have it. This is a completely different and younger team. I think Carl learned his lesson aged and experience may not overcome young and talented. Its a hard lesson to us old farts. The quaterback is one person that we can go out and get via a trade or off the wire. I tell you right now put the proper cast around any NFL worthy QB and it can be magical (e.g. Tom Brady).

    Comment by Darby — April 30, 2008 @ 12:00 pm

  27. Give Brodie a change to succeed (which he didn’t have at any time in 2007) and you will see a pretty special player. I think there’s some serious work left to do on the offensive line, but if we can piece together something that fits, this team could make a run at the division.

    Comment by Ray — April 30, 2008 @ 4:52 pm

  28. Sorry but Brodie Croyle is horrible. I’ll gladly stick my foot in my mouth if it turns out that he isn’t.

Flimsy, injury prone, dumb QB. Not a good decision maker.

    Comment by MYERS — April 30, 2008 @ 5:33 pm

  29. For the most part, I can’t argue with our draft. I was disappointed to see the Colts take both the best 2 Centers in the draft (2nd Round and 6th Round). I know we picked up some dude via free agency but I really don’t know anything about him. I am pretty confident with our 2 OL picks. So the only area on our line I am concerned with is Center.

Great job with our first 4 picks. Jamaal Charles is our backup and eventual replacement for LJ.

After watching highlights of th TN TE and the Clemson OL, I am very impressed. They are taking huge players that are super athletic.

Although, I hate Missouri, I can’t argue with the WR pick. Hopefully, he can fulfill the 2nd WR position, which makes him our 4th option on offense.

In the Orange Bowl, Flowers dominated for a stretch. Should be very good.

A on the draft. Now, who is going to teach Herm how to coach this talent? Hopefully he stays away from the offense so we can score some touchdowns.

Me either. Leave Chase where he is at.

  31. I agree, give Croyle a chance. He did not have a chance to do anything last year. You usually dont when your busy running for your life. I mean Huard got knocked out early, and Trent was obliterated the year before. You cant expect any QB to do good in that situation.

    Comment by Rick — May 1, 2008 @ 6:39 am

  32. If Croyle turns out NOT to be the guy, then I go after a QB who fits the mold, not one of these Doug Flutie wannabe’s. I want a Brian Brohm size QB, sure would have been nice to draft him for at least some good competition. I would have liked that, but I’m still happy with what did happen, can’t complain.

  34. anyone who says negative things about chase obviously does not know his game.. and if you thnik he will go undrafted.. well marcus your not very smart.. yes he is small.. but he is about the same height as a guy named brew breeze… ever heard of him… yeah probally… chase is alot like him.. the acurate strong arm… smart decision maker . good pocket presence… yeah… undrafted… very unlikely.. second round… yeah i say thats where he will go.. although not inportant now.. i just had to tell you he is not a wanna be anyone you named.. he is like pro bowler breeze… so yes.. at least no something before you consider typing 1st grade material..

  35. and how is he injury prone… i dont recall him missing a game the last 2 years.. bad decision making… how many interceptions did he throw?? well he had only one game with muliple ints… flimsy… wow… i feel less and less intelligent on here while reading this… meyers must be a ku fan… thats all i can think of…

    Comment by roncutler06 — May 2, 2008 @ 2:10 pm

  36. The problem I have with Chase Dainels is this: He’s good, no doubts there, and if there any KU fans out there trying to put his talent down, think about this: Dainels definitely better than KU’s quarterback, Todd Resceing (spelling wrong). HOWEVER, I feel like Dainels is more of a prototypical backup NFL QB than a franchise starter. Now, that doesn’t me he’ll never get a starting gig in the League, but I don’t think he’s going to be leading anyone to a Superbowl. This is all ameatre speculation though, and it doesn’t matter the Chiefs season at hand.

What does matter is this: Our rookie class is looking strong, and I think we’re going to have a good season of figuring out just where we stand, even if we only win 6-8 games. We’ll get a clear read on Croyle, develop and gel our offensive line, and give Flowers a season to grow and make mistakes without a playoff run being on the line. (Probably)

    Comment by Sam Creagar — May 2, 2008 @ 3:39 pm

  37. agreed… the only reason i brought chase up is cause they were bashing him… and i dont know why.. and everything they said was totally off.. and it had to be said.. but the second part of the discussion is solid.. i think we can win 8 games with the schedule.. i mean if larry plays every game.. we win 8.. and have a decent pick next year to get a qb or oline.. which ever is our week point.. maybe a corner
