Gonzalez Sets Tight End Yardage Record

[Yahoo Sports] Tony Gonzalez got his record, but not much else.

The Kansas City star broke the NFL’s career mark for yards receiving by a tight end Sunday, but finished with just three catches for 17 yards in a 34-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

“This is a game that a lot of us probably (would) just as soon forget,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez entered the game 3 yards shy of Shannon Sharpe’s 5-year-old record of 10,060 yards. He surpassed the mark on Kansas City’s second offensive series by catching a 6-yard pass from Damon Huard late in the first quarter.

The 12th-year pro and nine-time Pro Bowler has at least one reception in 120 straight games.

The record was greeted by polite applause from the crowd in Charlotte – a far different scene than Gonzalez originally expected.

“It takes a little bit off the record because of the way we got it,” Gonzalez said. “Maybe tomorrow, the next day, I’ll feel a little better about it.”

He wanted to set the mark last week in front of the home fans against Denver, a dozen family members were at Arrowhead Stadium hoping to see history and venue officials had planned to stop the game to honor Gonzalez. The tight end even lobbied his coaches to ask for the ball upon learning he was 3 yards from Sharpe’s mark.

But the Chiefs kept the ball on the ground in the final minutes of that 33-19 victory, leading a disappointed Gonzalez to discuss the issue with coach Herm Edwards, who said he didn’t want to risk a throw that late in the game.

    1. Wow, can’t really blame Tony now. What a shame he had to break the record in this stink fest.

If we don’t get rid of Herm, I won’t blame Tony one bit if he tries to force a trade.

    6. okay what i would like to know is how in the world is this mess all herm edwards fault. he either gives the plays to the QB or gives idea plays for the QB to call. now tell me, when Thigpen, Huard, or Croyle fumble the ball or throw an interception who’s fault is that. uhhhhhhhh well its not Herm’s fault because he was on the sidelines. when LJ fumbles the ball or falls down on purpose whose fault is that. herm’s or LJ’s. when our receivers can’t get open or drop a pass, whose fault is that. when the kc defense can’t stop the offense on 3rd much like what happened today, whose fault is that. its the players. the coach can’t motivate these so called players that we got. they have to be self motivated. reason why im saying this is because most chief fans are dumb to realize that it’s not herm’s fault. besides if we fire herm, who are we gonna get: Lane Kiffin, Scott Linehan, take jimmy johnson back in the late 80′s through the 90′s. he took a team that had been to the playoffs 3 times in the 80′s and changed their whole look by going to a youth movement. his first year 1989: 1-15, 1990: 7-9, 1991: 11-5, 1992 and 1993: Super Bowl seasons. Look at the players he got, Troy Aikman, Charles Haley, Emmitt Smith, Herchell Walker. Look at Chuck Noll. Look at the players he drafted over his first 5 years as Steelers head coach: 1969: Joe Greene, 1970: Terry Bradshaw, Mel Blount, 1971: Jack Ham, 1972: Franco Harris, 1974: Jack Lambert, Mike Webster, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, all 9 players went on to be hall of famers and sure enough with the help of those players the steelers became a dynasty. Look at Bill Walsh winning 3 super Bowls in the 80′s. taking Ronnie Lott, Carlton Williamson and Eric Wright from the 81′ NFL Draft to be 3 of his starting DB’s in the 81′ Super Bowl season, Joe Montana had only been in his 3rd season, same with Dwight Clark. he did not have many big names on that team other than those guys, Jack Reynolds and Fred Dean but only 5 guys on that 81′ roster were 30 years old and older. so quit lashing out at herm and just be patient.

Kansas City is terrible. The Chiefs are one of the worst football teams you have ever seen, and I don’t care how old you are. The Carolina Panthers were supposed to beat them. But they weren’t supposed to beat them like this.

The Panthers played one of the best games in franchise history Sunday at Bank of America Stadium. Despite working behind an offensive line that was missing its starting tackles, the Panthers amassed 441 total yards……..

You have got to be kidding me comparing Herm to Jimmie Johnson, Bill Walsh, and CHUCK KNOLL, You really are an idiot. No Herm doesn’t make these guys fumble or throw interceptions but he is the one putting these guys on the field with a game plan that never works. He is in charge of the team and is ultimatly responsible for there performance. And what has Herm ever done to be classified with the names above. At least when they did it they had already accomplished something in there coaching careers.

    10. Hunt Jr. needs to apply for a man card. Time to T.C.B (Take Care Of Buisness) They laugh at us on NFL Network. Deion Sanders calls us a HOMECOMING game every time we play a game. Enough is Enough. Get a coach with some Nuts, and a GM That is PROVEN. No more political bull$#$#!!!

    11. Chiefs fan #1, you might want to reconsider changing your s/n to Dumb@$$ #1. You have got to be kidding. Have you ever played football on any competitive level other than madden on your playstation? The Coach is the heart of a team. He determines what plays will be sent on the field, whether to run on 3rd and long, or throw in a certain situation. He determines what kind of defensive schemes should be used against the opponent. You are right, it is not ALL his fault. Yes Huard sucks big donkey balls and should be decapitated to rid the world of his pathetic existance, and most of the other players on this team should go as well, but the players will not be motivated unless they feel they are being sufficiently led. I really believe with this last draft we had and another miracle draft of that caliber, we have a fighting chance at being competitive in the next 2 or 3 years, but not without a COACH that knows what he’s doing. So do us a favor, and keep your comments to yourself to keep yourself from looking retarded any further. Remember “It’s better to sit in silence and let people think your dumb, than open your mouth and erase all doubt!”

    12. Tony Gonzalez should have acquired the rest of the points that he needed to break Shannon’s record at home during the
Denver game at home before his family and fans, even if we
had lost the game to Denver, Tony should have had that thrill of his fans and family cheering him on. Shame on you
Coach Edwards. Our season is in the pits anyway but it would have been a great day for Tony to have broken that
record at home during the Denver game. You should have given
it to Tony, Coach Edwards. Tony has certainly earned it.

    16. KC Chiefs #1.

just let me tell you one thing……..a GOOD coach takes bad players and makes them look good. A BAD coach takes good players and makes them look bad. So what I’m getting from your comment is that Tony G, Larry, and Derek sucks?
      P L E A S E!!!!

You said: “take jimmy johnson back in the late 80’s through the 90’s. he took a team that had been to the playoffs 3 times in the 80’s and changed their whole look by going to a youth movement. his first year 1989: 1-15, 1990: 7-9, 1991: 11-5, 1992 and 1993: Super Bowl seasons.”
Now lets look at reality: Herm 2006, 9-7 …..2007, 4-12…..2008, 1-4 at this point. See a pattern here??
I dont think Jimmy Johnson had a franchise record 12 losses in a row!!

Take some advice from me, get your “I Love Herm” tee shirt autographed, cause hopefully you wont get a chance soon!!!

    17. LOL at KC Chiefs #1. If Herm is such a great coach how has his team lost 13 of the last 14 games? The players you mention as playing poorly, are the players he puts on the field. He is responsible for how they play. If a player has one bad game, you can blame it on the player. If all of his games are bad then you have to blame that on the coach.
You asked us to be patient. How long should we be patient for. Everyone knew this would be a rebuilding year and we expected to lose to good teams, but I think we were all hoping for a 8-8 season.

    18. reading all these posts just makes me laugh cause instead of dissin’ the chiefs u guys are complaining about something else now. a fan that actually likes his team and will stick by them always. yes i said it and i don’t care what u guys say cause i really doesn’t matter. u don’t like what i say, too damn bad. root for the raiders cause al davis likes to listen to the fans cause obviously they know everything. im not saying that i know everything by that statement i had posted. im just saying what’s on my mind

Dave S – first of all im not comparing herm edwards to those hall of fame coaches. i was just saying look at where they all came from. out of nowhere to the hall of fame.

bryan – actually dude i played high school football all four years in my school so shut the fuck up and quit assuming shit and no i am not going to keep my comments to myself. herm knows what he’s doing, now carl peterson i don’t think he knows shit.

dennis – i am not a herm edwards fan but quit blaming this whole season on him. your right jimmy johnson didn’t have a record 12 losses in a row, however he did produce the worst season in dallas cowboys history in 1989. oh and in my statement where does it say that i said Tony G., Larry and Derrick (not Derek) sucks, i’d like for u to point that out for me please

      jimmie johnson: 1989- 1-15
herm edwards: 2006- 9-7 AFC Wild Card Berth

jeff- okay first of all, there not herm edwards players, there carl peterson’s players because he’s the reason they are there. herm just tells him who he wants

    19. KC Chiefs #1:

This is your exact comment: “the coach can’t motivate these so called players that we got.” “So called” players comment pretty much says you thing that they stink. These are the only ones left from DV’s team.

Dude, its the COACHES JOB to motivate these players or get some that he can!!! The coach (and in herms case i use this term loosely) is RESPONSIBLE for EVERYTHING that happens on the team!! you should have learned that from your high school playing days, Mr. Bundy. And back to 2006, that was Vermiel’s team that herm inhereted!! Have you seen anything close to that record since herm installed “his team”?? They have not even been close. They are continually getting WORSE!!

      Comment by dennis — October 9, 2008 @ 1:28 pm

    20. okay what im basically saying is that these players come into the NFL with goals like winning the super bowl and producing a hall of fame career, am i right. now a days players only play for the money but there are still some young players out there that want the Lombardi trophy. now why should herm have to motivate them to reach that goal. if its there goal they should want. do u see what im saying. now i will agree with u when u said he needs to get some players that are willing to win a super bowl rather than making millions of dollars. im not trying to start an argument with chiefs fans okay.

    21. After Tony retires, he needs to replace Shannon Sharpe on CBS sports, i can’t stand that mouthy bastard, didn’t say one thing about Tony breaking his record

    22. Also, in response to KC Chiefs #1, i agree that it’s not ALL Herm’s fault, he is partially to blame, and Peterson is also partially to blame, they draft players that should already be producing and aren’t so isn’t it his fault that he drafted sub-par players that were sub-par in college?
