Chiefs Cancel Meeting with Culpepper

[Kansas City.com] Suddenly, after the great game Tyler Thigpen played at New York, the Chiefs’ need to sign Daunte Culpepper to stabilize their quarterback play doesn’t seem as urgent. The Chiefs were planning to meet this week with Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowler, but the visit was abruptly canceled, a move that could end the talks between the quarterback and the team.

Even when Culpepper’s signing with the Chiefs looked probable, he would have needed at least a week or two before he was ready to play. Thigpen could have made the Chiefs’ eventual decision to bench him a difficult one.

    3. Allright I was really affraid they were going to sign him, which might have made a difference on them drafting a QB. Culpper is not the answer. I don’t know if Bones is going to play consistant, but I allways thought that we might have something in that guy. He may actually make a difference in what happens in the draft. I hope this Culpper talk is over with. We don’t need an over the hill stop gap. We need to find the QB of our future period.

    5. Herm’s a douche. One game and Thigpen is the savior. We’re the Chiefs and have’nt caught a break all season which leads me to believe one solid performance from Thigpen will not lead to another. At least we locked up a spot to get a franchise QB in the draft. Thanks Herm and Carl your the best. Schottenheimer/Cowher ’09.

    6. Even though Thugpunk did a good job, I still hope we draft a QB. He is not the answer. I prefer Colt McCoy or Matthew Stafford. Sam Bradford look good too. If I had to pick one, I would say Stafford. He started as a Freshman in High School and a True Freshman in college. So he knows what its like to go through the growing pains of being young in a new atmosphere.

    7. Bradford is a sophomore and isn’t even eligible for the draft and Colt McCoy has stated in several interviews that he is staying with the Longhorns for his senior year and is not even considering going into the draft. We need to forget about a QB and draft some lineman to protect a QB. It is hard to throw if you are on your back most of the time or playing hurry up offense. Michael Orr out of Ole Miss is an out standing LT, move Alberts to the interior LG and Orr to the outside and then we can have a throwing game. The O-Line and the D-Line make or break your game. Peroid!

    8. Cheif in Texas, you couldnt have said it better. Dont buy a new car until you dont have a garage to put it in.

    9. Great analogy Irv, If we can get a decent front line then who we get for QB wont matter that much. we will have a running game and that, as you know, opens up the passing game. Elvis (what my wife calls Thigpen due to his lip when you see him on the field) could be a decent QB and might be what we need, if and when the Oline if fixed. I think we had a fair draft. I think we should have done more for the O line but it was still fair. I think one draft and at least one free agent on the O line for the beginning of next year might help our chances the most.

    10. I feel sure that we need to draft a QB high or buy a proven gun. It has been demonstrated time and again that once you have a good QB the rest of the team will come together. McCoy is the offense in Texas this year, and I think after after a season as well as 2 solid drafts with o-lineman as the focus, and a few young 4 year vet free agents mixed throughout the team in weak spots then this team may look completely different in 2010. We had a good draft but we have a lot of holes to fill. The real problem here is that it seems that this org. always gets radical on thier game plan… Why does it have to be either free agent crazy or draft only? There are plenty of young proven FA’s every year. It is very short sighted and single minded to not use all the tools every year. I tend to think that we need some of both. You know the old saying moderation in everything…

    11. CHIEF IN TEXAS, actually you are wrong. Bradford is only a sophomore, BUT he is a third year player. He was red-shirted his initial freshman year, which means that he would be eligible to enter the draft if he so chose to do. I hope he does and we pick him up. IF YOU ALL DON’T BELIEVE ME, GO LOOK IT UP ON ESPN.COM OR SOMEWHERE SIMILIAR. GO CHIEFS!

    12. I like the idea of getting a tackle and moving Alberts inside. Just like with Tamba Hali, you’re going to get the best out of the player when they are playing the position they’re most comfortable with. Draft, trade, or sign a true left gaurd and then we run or pass. I would also like to see us get a power back to complement Charles.

    13. its a longshot but I say we focus on the o line in this draft and take chase daniel in the later rounds, he is not typical nfl size so he will slip through the higher rounds. He could be a huge sleeper, doug flutie esque. If he doesnt pan out we wasted a late round pick on the guy and we have another year to get our o line straightened out before we go after a qb with our first pick.

      Comment by LONGSHOT — October 28, 2008 @ 6:39 pm

    14. All the non-senior college QB’s would be smart if they stayed in college another year just to avoid the Chiefs taking them. As long as we have Herm around what ever QB we take won’t learn to be a great QB under Herm. It would just be wasted talent. Any QB we take while Herm is still around should do an Eli Manning/Chargers scenario and refuse to play for us.

    15. Tyler thigpen is a fluke, what now hes the quarterback of the future for us,shit he lost to a team that lost to the raiders.this will be the cheap way Clark and Carl take care of our quarterback problem.

      Comment by Chris — October 28, 2008 @ 8:59 pm

    16. IS MATT STAFFORD A JUNIOR or waht year is he cuz i think he’d be a good pickup

    17. i will say that thigpen is not our future QB but he is a good backup. we do need another QB either in the draft or free agency preferably the draft. any ideas on who should be our future QB

      Comment by KC Chiefs #1 — October 29, 2008 @ 1:49 am

    18. He might be our future QB this kid went to Coastal Carolina and he already has played better than Joe Flacco or Alex Smith. He is a competitor like a Farve he always moves the team. When he blows it is from gambling to much or a dumb over agressive throw. he will cut down on those and continue to get better. The good thing is that he is a competitor and can throw well and run.

      Comment by Chief Brad — October 29, 2008 @ 2:26 am

    19. No Chief Brad, the good thing is he is the only QB to start at least 2 games for us and is not already on IR….Saving CP and C.Hunt the $$$$$….

I hope everyone knows i always put C.Hunt to mean cunt…that fuckin douche!

    20. I can’t believe how eager you guys are to draft someone else who won’t be ready to play for two more years. The reason Thigpen did well this week is probably due to getting all the reps in practice. Show me another rookie that has played that well, minus Matt Ryan. What has to happen for people to recognize his talents and potential. HE didn’t lose the game for us. Poor play calling and the inability to lock down big plays on defense lost the game. Remember the Rich Gannon/Elvis Grbac situation? That is what you are asking for.

Chief in Texas, Irv24, and Rick are absolutely correct. It is IMPOSSIBLE to know the potential of your backfield without a quality offensive line. We could have Tom Brady or Peyton Manning and we would still struggle. Not to mention the fact that neither are as mobile as Thigpen. I would understand drafting a qb in a later round as long as the we find quality lineman on both sides of the ball.

As for the potential qb’s to come out in the draft, I don’t think their success in college will follow them to the nfl. Don’t get me wrong, they are very good right now. The big 12 alone has 6-7 that have potential. Daniel and Reesing are probably going to go the way of Troy Smith in Baltimore, if Reesing even pursues it. Robinson, Bradford, and Mccoy will be drafted, but I think they are still big question marks for the nfl. Graham Harrell is the one that stands out to me. I am curious to see how Tebow does at the combine as well.

    21. DanC sucks!

      Comment by Chief Tom — October 29, 2008 @ 11:15 am

    22. The Chiefs are not going to suck this bad get a top five pick and draft a offensive linemen. That would be dumb you have that high of a pick draft they need to draft a FRANCHISE QB. You can get quality in the later rounds for O-linemen that is one position that coaches can mold an average player and make them good.

      Comment by Nathan — October 29, 2008 @ 11:28 am

    23. Hey Chief Tom, thanks for the compliment. I’m just a realistic Chiefs fan that understands that it doesn’t matter what QB we draft next year as long as Herm Edwards is around. He won’t learn to be a quality QB under Herm and like I said earlier it would just be wasted talent. If you don’t believe that you’re just fooling yourself.
