[ESPN.com] Chiefs running back Kolby Smith was carted off the field with a sprained knee Sunday in the second quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Smith started in place of Larry Johnson, benched for disciplinary problems.

Kansas City was leading 21-3 when Smith got hurt. He hurtled into the line on a first-down run and gained 5 yards before he was tackled by safety Will Allen.

    1. It’s just another piece in this crazy ass puzzle of a season. Why expect anything different??!!

    2. I know we lost… but we lost flowers, johnson and smith at the end … that was the difference… but it was an exciting game… i hate that we lost, but I see that our young guys are getting a lot better, against the run, against the pass Carr had a nice interception, tank & mcbride played well, and our offensive line looked pretty good…

hey it’s something to build on… but this loss i think is the one that hurts the most of all season!!!!! especially because I live in florida!!!!!

    3. losing after being up 24-3 in the first half is from bad coaching.

look what chad Pennington has done since he got away from our smuck of a coach– I think they call it winning which herm the team/germ wouldn’t know about

    4. First of all we should have won it with that BS call on Tonys GREAT catch. How do you take that away from somebody? Second, I want to kill Herm now more than ever. How do you lose that game up 21 points? HOW? “21 points? Thats a lot of points. Thats arena league, not real football.” If there is still Herm supporters out there go to hell. He has a good enough team to win games.

    6. And Legget? Get rid of him…..
Also, it is a shame that Dorsey is constantly double teamed and our DE’s can’t get any pressure on the QB! We need a big time DE people! Our FB was not used adequately today and Bowe needs to quit dropping easy catches! TG was robbed, that’s all there was too it. And I think I may have been wrong about Thigpen, keep up this spread offense and get him max protection and we may have something special within the next couple years.

    7. Only one stat really stands out in this game, 4 turnovers to 1. How in the hell do you lose 2 games in a row with a combined 8-2 turnover differential? That literally defies every stat in th history of the NFL. Way to go Herm just keep breaking all the records that we never wanted. Now bring on the barrage of bashing posts because of me being negative (read realistic).

      Comment by NCCHIEFSFAN — November 2, 2008 @ 8:30 pm

    8. NCChiefsFan,

You won’t read any bashing from me. Your assessment of the turnover situation is legit.

The only problem is Clark, Carl, and Herm are trying to throw the season. They have the talent to win, they just choose not to do so. The sad part is the players and fans know it, but we don’t matter. CCH knows that they will still make their money and none of us can do anything about it except not buy tickets, which only causes fans not to watch on tv because of blackouts set by the NFL.

They will continue raising ticket prices after this season…just wait and see.

    9. are you guys blind? do you not see what herm is building??? he is slowly but surely making this a better and better team week by week.. anyone who can say that they havent seen any improvements are out of their minds! everyone was saying tyler thigpen didnt belong in this league are now watching a young quarterback develop into a better player each start he gets.. everyone who has been bashing the o-line saying how horrible they are held their own against one of the best d lines in the league and are gelling together.. our receivers are very good i dont care what you say.. our defense is playing more as a team and are starting to hold offenses a little more… the youngest team in the nfl is starting to show what they can do but not even close to their full potential and thats scary.. as bad as you all say herm is, i cant really see what bad he has done. all the coaches respect him and even though they won 1 game this season, his players still listen to every word he says and are with him 100%.. that should tell you something right there

    10. you must be right–I must have forgotten hermie’s record here and hermie’s record at NY and all those fine young players he developed at NY. I am sure he will develop Thigpen like he developed Chad Pennington. I would guess Pennington will tell you he is doing well at Miami because of the positive influence of Hermie “still building a team” Edwards.

    11. 24-3 halftime lead
      4-1 turnover differential

No I am not blind. Herm is a FKN idiot. Any other coach in this league would of won that game given that lead at the half. Not to mention the turnover differential. He MIGHT be getting the right players, but he cant be the one coaching them. We will get nowhere with Herm at the front. He doesnt deserve to be a coach. Head Scout or something maybe, but not a damn coach. The guy is a joke.

      Comment by Jones — November 3, 2008 @ 12:53 am

    12. Why did Herm call the timeout at the end of the game to give TB a chance to make a play?? They were scrambling to get a play off but Herm called a TO and let them talk it over and design a play that won the game. Justin, your loyalty is admirable but you don’t have a clue about what a good coach is. The Chiefs will NEVER WIN as long as Herm is here. He’s a cancer that has to be removed and if you can’t see that then you are the blind one.

      Comment by Mark F. — November 3, 2008 @ 12:56 am

    13. i also love how herm tried to ice the kicker at the end of the game by calling a time out. he must have seen a real NFL coach do that before and thought it was a neat idea.

    16. Think about it, Why would we want to win other than to make ourself and the players fell better. I was at the game yesterday and I was impressed by the way the players are improving. We may have something here next year or the year after. Thigpin is looking pretty good and our rookie corners are not doing bad either. It really hurt that Johnson, flowers and smith were all out for most of the game. I for one am glad they lost. That just gets us closer to the #1 pick in the draft. And the Bengals won. We just need the Lions to win, maybe they can with culpepper.

    17. I DONT KNOW WHAT A GOOD COACH IS???? Someone please say that to me 1 more time and i’ll be more than happy to prove i know more about coaching than anyone else… and lets see, herms record in ny is average but he made the playoffs a few times there despite being in the same conference with the best team in the nfl. chad pennington has been no different in miami as he has been in ny. the only difference in miami is that hes healthy now. and as i recall, he did better in ny when herm was there as opposed to when mangini was there. herm never went through a rebuilding phase while he was in ny. you blame the loss of the big lead to the YOUNG players. and you wanna argue which coaches would of started being conservative when they had a 3 score lead? please, go ahead and ask me which coaches would have done the same thing. i think you know the answer. and they didnt even go all that conservative on us either. they still threw it and booted it numerous times and the important drives that made us stall were drops or stupid penalties. they dialed up a pass and thigpen made the play but wasnt executed on the other side of the rope.

      Comment by justin — November 3, 2008 @ 11:31 am

    18. why dont you just see what the best and longest tenured coach in the league think about herm and if hes doing a good job or not. what do you think he went through down in tennessee a couple years ago??? it sure was hard for even the best coach to win more than a couple games with the youngest team in a rebuilding mode at that time. and im not saying this just because i love the chiefs.. im sayin it cause it is what it is. if he didnt know what he was talking about or didnt know what he was doing then the players would start mouthing him like the rams did to linehan. and who in here knows more about what a good coach is than an actual nfl football player??? anyone??

      Comment by justin — November 3, 2008 @ 11:36 am

    19. and as for calling a timeout at the end of the game.. have you ever thought that maybe they didnt have the right guys on the field for the defense they wanted?? HMMMMMM

      Comment by justin — November 3, 2008 @ 11:41 am

    20. Justin,

What does him being liked by other coaches really mean to the team? They like him because they get an automatic win out of him. And you even said it, you are right he didn’t go through a rebuilding year in NY. AND STILL HAD A MEDIOCRE RECORD. Really what do you see in him. Great we do have talent thats because we have got our highest draft picks ever with Herm. Figure it out man. We will all still cheer for the Chiefs because we all still bleed red.

      Comment by Bryan — November 3, 2008 @ 1:18 pm

    23. Justin, What makes Herm a solid coach?
      2001 10-6
      2002 9-7
      2003 6-10
      2004 10-6
      2005 4-12
      2006 9-7
      2007 4-12
      2008 1-7 and counting

he has in those years been to the playoffs 4 times

No admit he is a conservative coach that believes in “You play to win the game”, but does not execute. Yes I have seen some improvements but not what is expected from any fans out there. He needs to re-evaluate himself before he can evalute a player. He is a hypocryte and talks with a “forked tongue”. He should be a politician. He shopuld be a lawyer. As a coach he should really stick to what he really knows. That is defense and I wquestion that now also. +3 turnover margin and lose the game still, thats unacceptable

    24. Justin is Herm. That’s the only way to explain his moronic view of Herm as a coach. I bet he thinks Dubya did a great job as president too. I bet he thinks Herm is coach of the year for actually losing a close game to an undermanned Buc’s team. I love these guys who play Madden football and think they know how to coach.

    25. we lost yesterday not because of herm maybe herm was a part of the loss BUT yesterday you saw what you can expect out of young players DUMBASS MISTAKES like letting the reviever get behind you in the endzoine fo the game tying touchdown and fumbling the ball on the 5 yard line (charles) these things are growing pains when you have a young team like we do!!! i was dissapointed in the loss yesterday but not pissed cuz i saw our BOYS IN RED fight their asses off yesterday and play pretty well against A PLAYOFF TEAM

      Comment by Mike41 — November 3, 2008 @ 3:07 pm

    26. I don’t think you guys quite understand. coaches evaluate themselves and try and progress themselves year by year. look at marty. look how he progressed throughout the years. yea the players still love him too even though they only won 1 game. and no i dont think bush was a good president but thanks for making judgements on me and sizing me up off of my comment on herm..hmmm wait.. kinda the way you guys are sizing up the coaching and the front office. you just think cause the chiefs blew a 21 point lead cause the coaching sucks and we were too conservative… lets see; last week everyone got mad for running the ball on 3rd down, this week everyone is upset for throwing the ball on 3rd down. we still mixed it up in the second half and i dont have a single clue where you guys seen anything conservative out of the 2nd half.. did you ever think for a second that maybe on the other side of the ball that possibly one of the best defensive coordinators in the league coulda made adjustments to stop us more. did you actually think the 5th ranked defense was just gonna play like that the whole game? we lost! so what! it was expected out of this year. a team this young has to figure out how to close games and their getting better. its not like we have trent green at qb with holmes in the backfield having the best o line in football to let the offense do cartwheels in the middle of any defense who faces them

      Comment by justin — November 3, 2008 @ 3:08 pm

    27. and if you hate it so much then quit watchin the games.. i go to every chiefs web site i can think of and all i hear is fire herm and carl and it gets pretty old after awhile! if you hate the coaching and front office that much then quit supporting them and watching them to show what you stand for.. if you wanna watch a good football team right now then go jump on some other bandwagon.. be a chiefs fan and be with your team through thick and thin.. the more this year goes on the more you guys can relate to the philly and new york fans.. its so obvious that just because you have in your head that herm is a bad coach, that everything he does, is automatically a bad call in your mind

      Comment by justin — November 3, 2008 @ 3:13 pm

    28. and yea go ahead and call me a moron. ive been around football more than any of you guys combined.. ive spent pretty much my whole high school life for football and talked to just about every coach i knew about what all they knew and then graduated high school to play college ball so all i do most of the day is talk to coaches and study the game.. so i think its safe to say my credentials are pretty good

      Comment by justin — November 3, 2008 @ 3:17 pm

    29. I will admit that the team as a whole is starting to play better, and I think Gailey is starting to get some restrictions lifted off of him in regards to play calling.
Herm just doesn’t seem to know how to manage a game though, his only strategy is to keep it close so a field goal can win it at the end….. refer to yesterday-we get out to a 21 point lead and he manages to make it close so we lose by a field goal….. And could someone please tell the D-Line that they don’t have to count to 3-Mississippi before they attempt to rush the passer……

    31. Ha, we can’t simultaneously love the Chiefs and be disappointed with a bad head coach? That’s crazy. True fans want what’s best for the team, not blindly accepting it “as-is” and just hoping for the best our of people who are in over their heads.

Numerous stats and facts back up that Herm is a bad NFL coach (for instance, read some commentaries at this site), but I never hear any FACTS that make Herm a good coach. Herm has proven time and time again to be a bad game-day coach, bad game-week coach, and a bad training camp coach. Aren’t those the top 3 requirements for coaching skills? Just because he MIGHT be a good scout does not make him a good head coach. Just because people “like” him as a person, doesn’t make him a good head coach. That’s the problem with a lot of the mainstream Chiefs media, they can’t separate the man from the head coach. There’s a lot of people I like that would make horrible NFL coaches.

Oh, and before comparing us to the Titans “rebuilding”, try reading the commentary “Not a Titan Model” posted to this site last week. That erroneous analogy was blown out of the water.

    32. can i not voice my opinion on here as well? ;) and yea, im a true fan, and i believe whats best for the team is herm. so i dont im blindly accepting anything. i dont want you guys to think im a kool aid guy that finds the glass half full. i’ll be just as quick to complain about something as anyone. yea its true that herm has had a little trouble with some clock management. thats about the only complaint i have on him. the qb situation is lookin good so far and i was also quick to say thigpen was the worst excuse of a quarterback i ever.. but thats what i get for bein quick to judge. my problem on the o line is mcintosh. i think its ridiculous that the coaches still let him start and should let herb go ahead and start there. other than that i think their getting better. as for receivers, no complaints for the top 2. it looks like muhsin muhammad was right about bradley not really getting a chance in chicago and has a lot of talent. our corners are great for rookies and i think jarrad page will be really good but still has a couple mess ups and pollard reminds me a lot of roy williams. i love his energy and i love his leadership but he takes some horrible angles a lot.. sometimes i think im alone about this one but i love kolby smith. he reminds me a lot of priest holmes! but i dont know if we’ll get to see him anymore this year. i really dont wanna make any coaching chamges cause that can stunt our growth a lot. i think thats the reason alex smith turned out so badly is cause he had to do somethin different every year

I am so happy that Tyler Thigpen from freakin Coastal Carolina is doing an awesome job for this team, but why aren’t we winning? Game management and clock management, it’s as simple as that. This guy Thigpen needs a shot at the starting position next year, unfortunatly he probably won’t get it cause of Herm. God forbid we have a QB that can make a game changing play. I have voiced my opinion for weeks about picking up Vick, because I think we need a play making QB, we have it in a young white boy nicknamed PigPen.
Get an O-Line that will help this guy out. One other question? How the F@%ck did Croyle beat out Thigpen for the starting role?

    48. I will never understand how anyone can say that Herm is what this team needs. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but when you say things like that you lose all credibility here. We will not win a game the rest of this year and no more than 3 next year. In 2 years we may win 5 but then everyone will be getting old and it will be time to rebuild again. Get a real coach now and if Herm wants to scout for an Nfl team, let him since evaluating talent is his forte. Let game planning and weekly preparation to someone who is qualified and that surely isn’t Herm.
