[9News.com] Mike Shanahan may not have a new job after all. After reports surfaced the former Denver Broncos head coach was close to taking the top job with the Kansas City Chiefs, those reporting that have backtracked.

ESPN now reports only that the Chiefs are targeting Shanahan for their head coaching job after the team fired Herm Edwards on Friday. Initially, ESPN reported that a deal was near between the Chiefs and Shanahan.

The NFL Network’s Adam Schefter, who recently finished writing a book with ex-Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, maintains Shanahan will not be taking the job with the Chiefs and is not considering it.

“They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Schefter told 9NEWS. “All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it’s not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I’m here to tell you just the opposite, it’s not going to happen.”

Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.

    2. Schefter is the big Rats buddy, but Shany would not tell him anything about this topic…I know this from living in Denver for the past 6 years.

    3. so what makes this guy so sure? he is usually a great analyst but he never even says how he knows all this. he sounds like a broncos fan who would just hate seeing ol rat face on the other sidelines 2 times every year. if ya ask me, i think this is all a ploy to hold fans over until after the superbowl when we hire Todd Haley

      Comment by KC111110 — January 24, 2009 @ 12:21 pm

    4. I want Todd Haley. I wouldn’t mind shannahan only because our running game would be tremendous again but he sucks balls at defense. I say get:
      Todd Haley as HC
      Chan Gailey as OC
for our DC I have no idea…a dream coach would be Paul Pasqualoni (the current DC for the dolphins).

Rumor has it that if we get Haley we will be top candidates for picking up Kurt Warner in the offseason.

    5. Yeah but which version of Kurt Warner would we be getting? The Superbowl MVP Warner? Or the Warner who just a couple years ago was on a HUGE downswing? If you ask me I wouldn’t like the idea of Warner at QB. Hell Kiper has us picking Sanchez in the draft, if we’re going offense and not linemen in the first round, I would like to see Maclin drafted. Could you imaging D-Bowe on one side and Maclin (friggin OMGLOOKATTHATGUYRUN) on the other? We’d have a strong recieving core. I highly doubt Pioli takes a QB that high in the draft.

    6. i want shannahan but if we dont get i wont care i just dont want to deal with Chan Gailey as are head coach that would be a the worst possible thing for the chiefs if we were planning on making him are head coach the we should of just keept herm as are coach.

    7. Thankfully we won’t end up with that leather faced idiot. WE WANT TODD HALEY!!!

      Comment by Chief Tom — January 24, 2009 @ 4:49 pm

    8. I don’t see Chan Gailey becoming our HC, although he was successful with the Dallas Cowboys with his 2 seasons he took them to the playoffs in each. Regardless, I like his offensive mind not his HC ability. Plus if we get Haley the offense will basically be run by him.

On the draft issue, one of the main concerns for Haley is his ability to have success with a young quarterback. I think we will draft a QB regardless of having Warner, ease the transition for the young guy and teach him, just not in the first round. I see us getting Crabtree or Maclin..hopefully, either would be amazing.

    9. I’ve never liked Shannahan, so i would really hate for him to be our coach.

      Comment by Travito — January 24, 2009 @ 7:25 pm

    10. If Haley gets the job, I can see us getting Warner or some other older QB and using our first pick on a O Lineman. But I think Warner will stay where he is at. I think there will be better QBs available in next years draft. I know Shanahan is the face of the enemy, but I think he hates Denver for firing him and we know he hate the Raiders already. I wouldn’t mind getting him.

    11. I like Kurt Warner but I don’t like the idea of him coming to KC. We need to stick with Thigpen for the time being unless he proves us otherwise.

      Comment by Stich — January 24, 2009 @ 8:54 pm

    12. What is this!? Am I the only guy that likes Thigpin!? I don’t want to draft a first round QB and them turn out to be Ryan Leaf. I mean damn, Kurt Warner? REALLY? And thank GOD that the ex DONKEY isn’t our head coach. Bring on Haley and lets run that offense with a mobile QB with a rocket arm i.e. Thigpin.

    13. Who gives a s**t the Hermpire has come to an end! Herm you’re a hell of a nice guy but that doesn’t win games if you knew how to manage the clock or make halftime adjustments you’d still be employed, have fun going back to what ever it is you supposedly do well.

    15. Who do you all think should be our d-cordinator? I say bring in some fresh blood and get Bud Foster from Virginia Tech, those boys have always played bad ass d then draft Macho Harris

      Comment by NCCHIEFSFAN — January 24, 2009 @ 10:27 pm

    16. No Shanahan!!! he f**ked us over in the ’97 playoffs when he had his offense grease up their uniforms so we couldn’t tackle them. That is so cheap, and messed up. F**k Sham-ahan

      Comment by Chief Tom — January 24, 2009 @ 10:54 pm

    17. I can see Thigpen staying through as a sort of transition QB, but his cons defintely outweight his pros.

      Comment by pentekno2 — January 24, 2009 @ 11:17 pm

    18. Thigpen is definitely an option. It’s just so hard to see him being a “franchise quarterback” considering his shotgun/pistol style of play. We all saw how ineffective he was under the center. Warner is good for a very short amount of time. But then what…?

D-coordinator, I’d say anyone is better than what we have…which is no one. Mr. Gunther is in Detroit, they were the only defense worse than us. So, I could care less who we get cuz you can only get worse by one spot. Haha.

For the record, I like Thigpen…he’s fast and has options. Warner is slow and old, BUT he always manages to get the ball off before he gets sacked.

      Comment by Josh — January 25, 2009 @ 2:17 am

    19. True, we need OL and help on defense (DL, LB, DE). Leave it up to Pioli to pick a QB….Herms gone and it’s no wonder as they picked Croyle….just poor coaching and management to put your stock in a guy like that. Gray and Thig can fight it out with a FA and someone will emerge. Our RG and RT must be replaced by a plug-in draft pick.

Shanahan has hated KC forever…so what makes people think he would want to move there and get death threats for a loss or a bad season?

Pioli is the man and good decisions are going to replace bad one’s….we must be patient. There is a good draft and FA’s may actually want to play for the new Mgr who is willing to give actual signing bonuses for quality players.
      GO CHIEFS!

      Comment by Mike — January 25, 2009 @ 9:28 am

    20. Lets face it guys, Thigpen is not a franchise QB. 60 to 70 percent of his trows were to TG, in some hard to reach places I might add. A lot of those trows would have been picks having not been thrown to an all pro tight end in TG. The best deep ball that was thrown all year was to Thigpen himself by a WR. Without TG Thigpen would have been lost. Im not sying hes a terrible player, just that hes not a franchise QB. Also with the way that he scrables he will end up getting seriously injured very soon. Then what do we do. If this is the style of offence that the Chiefs will run in the future the best QB avalible in the draft for this type of systems is hands down Chase Daniel. He will be avalible in the later rounds of the draft. Then you have 2 QBs with similar talents to fit the spread system. If this is not the system for the future then neither of these QBs are a good fit and we wait till next years deep draft QB pool, giving Thigpen a full year to prove himself. You start by giving him tools to succed and Crabtree at #3 is so inviting. Remeber you draft buy talent and not buy need. This team needs many things right now, but Crabtree is the most explosive player in this years draft and D Bowe has not yet proved himself as a #1 WR. He is not as sure handed as one might like at the #1 WR spot. As far as HC goes, Pioli did not get rid of Herm before he had someone else in the works and I think that this is why it took so long to fire Herm. The questions is who will it be. I am with the rest of the Chiefs nation, and believe that Haily has already been recruited by Poli and will be announce after the SB.

    21. Shanny is guaranteed 21 million dollars over the next 3 years by the donks (from his last contract). Even if another team signs him for 3 mil a year, the donks have to pay him 4 mil a year to make up the difference.
I do not think he will coach unless he is given total control like he had in denver. He likes the power…

    23. Al Saunders is in Washington being the OC for the Redskins. He’s not coming back.

    25. Right on Chief Tom. No Leather face X-Donkey for us. I want B. Cowher. Just watching old Superbowl highlights on NFL Network… That guy is a true leader. And his teams are always in the playoffs. Superbowl appearances and Championship Games.

      Comment by Chief Brad — January 25, 2009 @ 5:19 pm

    26. I don’t understand the beating that some of you continue to hand out to Thigpen. True, he makes some errors, but DAMN, what do you expect from a guy thrown to the wolves with limited time with the starters? I respect your opinions, but the criticism is simply unfair. He outplayed many of the QB’s on the opposite side of the field, a future hall of famer #4 comes to mind. He helped us be competitive, and gave the offense a spark when it appeared to be as bad as ever. Say what you want about missing throws or forcing balls to TG, but that is a young, inexperienced player, trying to make a play for his team. In previous posts regarding TG’s future, many of you changed your minds about Herm to keep TG happy. If that is the case, then keep this in mind; TG showed much more enthusiasm the last half of the season and his support for Thigpen was obvious.

The truth is that until the offensive line becomes dependable, we won’t be able to realize his true potential, although I think it is already apparent. I will continue to put the Rich Gannon comparison out there. Difference is Rich came in as an 8 year vet, and got to learn the system for 2 more years. If we give the kid time and support, he will be THE guy. Go ahead, write it down, and feel free to call me on it.

We are looking good regarding cap room, so it doesn’t make sense to draft another QB in the first couple rounds when you don’t know how they will adjust to the NFL. The positions that we need to improve through the draft translate better to the NFL; Oline, Dline, and linebackers. Another late round RB might be beneficial as well since LJ’s future is in question.

      Comment by Travis — January 25, 2009 @ 11:24 pm

    27. Here is what is going to happen, first of all, whoever we draft at pick number three is not going to be a QB, because whether I like it or not, Thigpen will be our starter next year! In a later than first round we will pick up a QB to compete, unless Pioli can surprise me and pull off the trade this year…

Next year or the year after that, either Tom Brady or Matt Cassel will become a free agent, or tradeable/expendable, and who do you think the Patriots are going to want to trade with…that’s right, their old friend Scott Pioli!

Our first pick need to be either a stud offensive lineman who can play multiple positions, or a one man wrecking crew of a defensive end. Our second pick in the draft need to be whichever we did not get, either the offensive or defensive player.

Just the opinions of another arm chair GM, who lost in the championship of fantasy football this year.

(FYI, I know this is not Fantasy Football, it the real thing!)

      Comment by Mike Noonan — January 25, 2009 @ 11:33 pm

    28. Noonan,
You took the words right out of my mouth. Pioli if your reading this “DONT DRAFT A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND!!!” Your better QB’s are in the later rounds anyway, cause they got a work ethic. Thigpen needs to be the guy until he quits getting better every game. OL/DE are Priorities #1 and#2. Any QB in the world could be in our back field and it wont matter if hes on his ass the whole time! Herm is gone and thats a GREAT start.

      Comment by david — January 26, 2009 @ 11:50 am

    29. You guys need to stop and think, if you were the QB and your O-line sucked, who would you be looking to most of the time?! Yeah! Tony Gonzalez, the hall of famer!!Bowe drops to many and every other option is unproven. Think before you trash thiggy. I think he’s an improving QB that should be given a shot at least! Go Chiefs!!!

      Comment by TJ — January 26, 2009 @ 6:12 pm

    30. Ok so..
I did a comparison of Thigpens numbers vs
Big ben, Delhomme, Flacco at the end of the season.
If you do the same you will see that the numbers were very similar with all 4 quarterbacks.
      The only difference??? DEFENSE!!!!
Tyler made our patchwork offensive line look good by being mobile enough to buy time. If we say pick a QB third this year and he has numbers like thigpen did last year would we be talking about a new QB?????????
Truth is you put Tom Brady, Dan Marino, John Elway, Joe Montana on the current chiefs team and we would only be speaking their names as has beens or never weres.
Great teams are great TEAMS!!! You dont put Joe Montana on the 0-16 lions and say wow they would have made it to the superbowl with Joe.
You build in the trenches OL/DL. That is what wins you football games PERIOD. Any quarterback with time to throw will pick you apart. A defensive line that can pressure with 4 makes the rest of the defense easy.
We dont need to waste our 3rd pick on a QB that will just be looking up at the sky from the flat of his back all game… Brodie??
Give the QB some help and make his job easier. Do you honestly think that Joe Flacco is a great QB?? He didnt have to do anything at all the defense would spot him 14 points a game.
