[Kansas City.com] It’s official. Todd Haley is the new head coach of the Chiefs. Owner Clark Hunt and general manager Scott Pioli introduced Haley today.

Saying player evaluation is his top priority, Haley said: “I’m for whoever gives us the best chance to win. Period.”

Haley will receive $12 million over four seasons, a source told The Kansas City Star.

Those are the same terms of the contract signed by Herm Edwards in January 2006. Edwards was fired last month as Chiefs head coach with a year left on that contract.

First test for haley. How does he handle LJ crying and Tony G wanting out.

    6. I say LJ goes to the Pats as part of the Cassell trade. I say TG stays and we win the AFC W and go the the playoffs, losing to the Colts AGAIN! But we win the SB within 3 years!

    7. Remember Len Dawson came to the Chiefs after sitting on Pittsburgh bench as a 3rd stringer. Best Chiefs QB ever!!!

    9. The Pats aren’t interested in LJ, If they’d be interested in anybody it would be adding Gonzales to the already potent Moss/Welker threat, with Faulk mixed in there too.

I could see trying to get a QB though, I just dont know if that QB is Cassell. Ive heard talk recently that Losman has been in more and more talk about being given a chance to revive his career with a new team like Minnesota, Detroit, or maybe a KC. Im not sure that I like this idea either, but im just repeating what ive heard around the horn on some message boards and such.

If I had to bet on it, I would think that should we keep our 3rd overall pick that it goes to a line position, be it DE or an offensive linemen, perhaps now that Haley is the coach more so onto the OL.

All this talk about Crabtree or Maclin I think is a little bit of wishful thinking. With a smart coach and a smart GM who are well aware that this is a team in disarray and in the midst of building mode, they would likely go for the safe pick, which generally isn’t a ‘skill’ position.

    10. one thing I do know is we are all happy Herm and King cCarl are gone that’s a great improvement already!! but, lets realize this haley is offensive minded!! We already have a high powered offensive coordinator in Chan We really need to get back to basics and play smash mouth football we need defense!! yeah putting numbers on the board is great but, not when the other team is doing it just as easy!! We need a D-coordinator badly!! who is out there that is worth his salt????

    12. what does everyone think about leftwich hes a free agent and he really played good i thought when his number was called and we would not have to do any tradeing or draft a qb

    13. what if we signed haynesworth and pair him with dorsey i think if we added him the defense would be top 10 of course he wants to be the highest paid defensive player but he might be worth it he can change a defense

    14. why not look romeo as our defensive cordinator even though he didnt do anything in cleveland i think he is a good coach

      Comment by dirt — February 6, 2009 @ 4:31 pm

    15. I think Romeo would be a good signing for us, just because he wasn’t a good HC doesn’t mean he isn’t a good DC……if everyone will remember, Gun was a helluva DC when they made him HC……we all know what happened there.

      Comment by Kansas City Krusher — February 6, 2009 @ 4:58 pm

    16. I dont think that KC and Pioli will end up going after a Haynesworth or Peppers – the Price tag for these guys may simply be too much. And dont think that I wouldn’t love to have either or hell, even both. I just think that its a long shot. I would expect us to get a free agent or two whose name is recognizable to football enthusiasts, but maybe 50/50 if an average fan has heard of. I.E., no real superstars, but solid, hard working kind of guys who go about their business.

I agree about DC, Im looking forward to seeing if Chan Gailey gets to stay put or not, and who we will end up picking up as our DC.

      Comment by pentekno2 — February 6, 2009 @ 5:06 pm

    17. I dont like Leftwich as a free agent too much. If we can build up our O-line well, then maybe. maybe.

He plays well in spot type situations, but the knock on him in the pros and even back to college is that he has a very ellongated delivery. It takes the ball a long time to leave his hands once he’s made a decision where he is going. Tim Tebow is getting these same knocks for his NFL potential right now.

    18. We need to take it one day at a time.

Job #1 is to fill out the coaching staff, but since we are last to fill the head coach position, there may not be too many quality candidates left.

Job #2 Convince Tony to stay and be a part of the growth of the team.

Job #3 Launch that whiner LJ for whatever we can get. He can go get suspended in someone else’s team.

Job #3 Figure out what to do in the draft and all the cap money.

      Albert Haynesworth, UFA, Tennessee Titans

    22. Just to clarify with the Cassel proponents. Cassel started 15 games, and most of the 1st game against the Chiefs. Cassel was sacked 47 times this year WITH a decent offensive line; 21 TD/11 INT, 7 fumbles, 4 lost; threw for 3693 yards on 327 completions at a rate of 63.4% with an overall rating of 89.4. Those numbers are based on what amounts to a full season, his fourth season, with excellent receivers.

Thigpen is in his second year, barely making the team as a 3rd string QB, with limited time with any of the team, not to mention 1st string. Tyler started 11 games, played in 14 with limited time in 2 he didn’t start. His first real action was against the Raiders in game 2, admittingly a rocky start. Stats for the year; 18 TD/12 INT, 6 fumbles, lost 2; 2608 yards on 230 completions at a rate of 54.5% with a rating of 76; only 26 sacks.

But if you look at his stats beginning week 8 when he took over for the rest of the season; completion percentage – 58.7%, better than Kerry Collins, Mark Bulger, Kyle Orton, and others. Overall rating – 84.14, above Roethlisberger, Collins, Garrard, Orton, Bulger, Campbell, Flacco, and…..Favre.

Does anyone think the signing of this one player going to resurrect our team? Is the benefit worth the cost he would demand?

      ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!

We have much dire needs other than QB. Have you people paid attention to the offensive line? Defensive line? Linebackers?

I am not here to disrespect anyone, but it does not make any sense and I have yet to see a viable reason it should even be considered. I completely understand “gut” feelings, but there is absolutely NOTHING that suggests he would do better here. Actually, when you compare team to team, I believe Cassel does far worse.

It is fair for everyone to have their own idea, but come with something solid………

    23. GET RAY LEWIS!!!

      Comment by Kevin — February 7, 2009 @ 12:12 am

    24. Why would we want to sign a bunch of old, past thier prime FA’s. Have you not paid attention to what King Carl has tried to do the last decade. Just look at the crap he brought in here. We finally got rid of him, but you want the same things to happen when he was here. I’m all for building by the draft with an infusion of talent through free agency, but they have to fit a specific mold. Younger players who have not quite reached thier potential or who will be able to sustain a certain level; such as Terrell Suggs or Julius Peppers, both 26.

As far as the QB goes, why not stick with Thigpen. He’s the best QB we’ve had in KC since Gannon. He makes the developing O-line comfortable with his ability to extend a play and he is plain fun to watch. I’m tired of watching QB’s like Huard and Trent Green who wear concrete shoes and collapse under pressure. He deserves another chance.

    25. It’s past time to trade Tony G. 13 years is a long time, not many play to 14 or 15. Get something while we still can, if we still can. Stupid (non) move by karl last fall but what else is new. (I ask you how many more games did we win with him than with out him?) Bring Tony in and have pick the teams he’d like a shot to play with and then have him help make a deal get done. He derserves a shot to play with a legitimate championship caliber team, we’re not that team and we’re not going to be there while he’s still in the league.

As for LJ he needs to to be traded for draft picks or linemen. He’s not getting younger. RB’s only have a shelf life of so long although he did not get used much the first couple of years so his career may have been extended a bit longer. New coach doesn’t need to deal with his issues though. Time to move on.

    27. Look at Denver and ther offensive line awhile back, Throw any running back in there scheme and they run all over. There offensive line was great. There QB as great but not that good. Yes I will hear it for that statement. But look at the logic, If the O-Line can keeep the QB up right, he will be able to make plays. Tyler would be great for that. Build the O-Line to be great.

      Comment by kcchiefs19692003 — February 7, 2009 @ 3:09 am

    28. Let Thigpen keep his job, he’s one of the bright spots from last season. The guy barely makes the team and then gets thrown to the wolves because our line let everyone else get killed. He works his ass off and wants to win. Towards the end of the season he actually made our line look descent and we all no it’s not. I say keep Tyler and improve the line!! I’m totally with the Peppers and Suggs addition and possibly adding Haynsworth. Think those additions would be huge for us and we can compete for the playoffs again finally.

    29. As far as our next Defensive Cordinator goes, think it will be Romeo because of his relationship with Pioli or Clancy Pendergast because of his with Haley. Maybe we can get Dansby then too, I don’t know, just thoughts.

    30. VAchief

Trading Tony shouldn’t be an option and here is why. Tony led the league in receptions, 96, yards, 1058, and TD’s, 10, at the TE position. He would have ranked 12th in yards, 4th in receptions, and 5th in TD’s as a WR.

Tony is to the TE position that Jerry Rice was to the WR. He is an icon, the best EVER. Rice played until he was over 40. TG turns 33 this month. He doesn’t have injury issues. He plays hard every down. He blocks well. Can catch almost anything. No one can cover him. Period. Not to mention being a solid, strong character, person.

Explain to me why we should trade him. What is his value to our team? A draft pick or two, for the best ever? Doesn’t make sense to me, when you have no guarantee what you are getting in return.

Yes, we need to make changes to our team, but trading our most reliable offensive weapon would be stupid.

    32. yea i wouldnt trade him either we wont get a player better than him even if we got a first round pick which we wont but as far as the draft is concerned i say for the first round get an offensive lineman or really i like crabtree hes goin 2 be a game changer i think i would love 2 see bowe and crabtree lined up 2gether but if we draft a lineman with our pick we could have one of the best line tandem and they would both be young im all against drafting a qb in the first

      Comment by dirt — February 7, 2009 @ 9:57 am

    33. Why the hell would we pick up Tank Johnson… that idea is just asinine. Do you really think our management would do that? Get a clue man. The others you are talking about are all longshots but TJ is just out of the question.

We MUST keep Tony. Travis is exactly right bout the situation with him. What the hell would we get for Tony G that would be even close to how valuable he is to this team. Make him happy whatever it takes.

Also I am with the others saying that Thigpen should get another chance. He should! Why the hell not? Its proven through stats that he had nearly as good (if not better in some cases) season than Cassell. WTF it makes 0 sense if we were to try and get Cassell and then pay out of our ass for someone who had a DECENT year. Thigpen had a decent year too and I think has more upside than a guy like Cassell.

      Comment by RedNGold4LIFE — February 7, 2009 @ 10:50 am

    34. I think that Thigpen gets another shot. What we would have to give up for Cassell simply isnt worth his potential value.

Thigpen will probably start for the next year or two, but lets remember not to put too much stock into stats. Drew Brees has incredible stats the last two years and is always finishing around .500. Ben Big doesn’t have Drew Brees numbers, but his team generally gets 10 or more wins. Wins/losses are the most important stat for a QB. We give Thigpen another chance because he deserves to show what he can do in a situation that once he goes down and scores that the defense and actually step up and stop somebody.

    35. Why would we get rid of Tony G?!? He’s been pretty much the greatest Chief we’ve had since the 70′s!!! Show some sort of loyalty! He still ranks in the top 5 every year in all stats.

Keep TG and throw Larry Johnson to the wolves…set him on the curb and staple a FOR SALE sign to his forhead. We need O Line! Priest Holmes was as great as he was partially due to the guys who played in front of him. Don’t get me wrong, I am still a Priest fan, he was awsome. However, our line at that time was the best in the league. Even Croyle “the crumbler” could have safely stood behind that line.

    36. I’m with you chiadawg, that’s the only and only time LJ was good is when we still had that line. He had back to back 1700 yd years, what has he done on his own?? He can’t block, he can barely catch and now he drops to the ground with the first contact. If we build the line up, it won’t really matter who our RB’s are or who the QB is cuz there will be time to make plays.

      Bye LJ!!!

    39. edNGold4LIFE- do you know we are 36 million under the cap????

Kurt Warner, UFA, Arizona Cardinals : Kurt Warner’s base salary for 2008 season is $4 million. He can lead and mentor any quarterbck in the NFL. Would be a great addition to help Tyler Thigpen

Brandon Jacobs, UFA, New York Giants:Brandon Jacobs base salary for 2008 season is $1,057,000 The last good FB I can remember us having was traded to Minnesota, As in Richardson. HE would be a great pounder and since NY “G” Men have Wade also they can only afford to keep one.

Owen Daniels, RFA, Houston Texans :Owen Daniels base salary for 2008 season is $451,720 If Tony leaves I would do my best to get this guy, He can really be explosive with the right QB

Tank Johnson, UFA, Dallas Cowboys:Tank Johnson base salary for 2008 season is $1,600,000 Sure he has issues in the past but he is just a beast As a DT, Even if its for one year, Haley will not take any crap. Do you remember the Bolding/ Haley conflict

Albert Haynesworth, UFA, Tennessee Titans: Albert Haynesworth base salary for 2008 season is $7,250,003, In spite of these negative marks on his record (stomping incident), Haynesworth remains a figure in any discussion on the league’s best defensive players.

Anquan Boldin: Anquan Boldin base salary for 2008 season is$2,500,960, Boldin is scheduled to make $2.5 million in base salary this season, $2.75 million in base salary in 2009 and $3 million in base salary in 2010.

Even if you sign Tank for 1 year, you can still make a killer defense, and still be under the cap.

Go for OL in draft spend some money in FA to get someone on defense….for gods sake someone on defense that can get to the feakin QB!! If we can do these things we could win the wild wild (weak) AFC WEST!

    42. Here is my opinion on the free agent situation and why we won’t be able to obtain some of those listed above:

      1. Kurt Warner – There is no way Arizona is going to let him get away after, what I believe, to be an MVP season, and let unproven Leinert the reigns to what has a become an extremely potent offense.

      2. Brandon Jacobs – New York would be just as stupid to let Jacobs get away. He makes the “thunder/lightning” thing work. Ward would be a great addition however, and should be on our radar since he played in college in the area.

      3. Owen Daniels – He is becoming a great TE, but with the recent productivity of the Texans offense, I don’t see him being dealt either.

      4. Tank Johnson – I doubt that Pioli is going to start his rebuilding with players with questionable character.

      5. Haynesworth – This one may actually be possible, but that is a tremendous amount of money. Could go either way.

      6. Boldin – I would actually love to see this happen, however, Boldin is extremely important to the Cardinals offense. He is just as important as Fitzgerald and that offense wouldn’t be the same without him.

      Here is my list of free agents I think we will have an interest in with a chance to get, not all obviously, not in order;
      1. Jeff Saturday – Center – Indy
      2. Mike Goff – Guard – SD
      3. Julius Peppers – DE – Carolina
      4. Bertrand Berry – DE – Arizona
      5. Terrell Suggs – DE – Baltimore
      6. Karlos Dansby – OLB – Arizona
      7. Jonathon Vilma – MLB – Saints
      8. Nnamdi Asomugha – DB – Raiders
      9. Devery Henderson – WR – Saints
      10. Tommie Harris – DT – Bears
      11. Will Smith – DE – Saints
      12. Roy Williams – WR – Cowboys
      13. Chris Snee – G – Giants

    43. Love your post Travis.

As I have said before I think our main target should be Terrell Suggs. I think Chris Snee would be a great pick up too (is he R Guard or L Guard?). We need a R. Guard, because we got a hell of a player at L. Guard in Brian Waters. We will be set Offensively if we can get a good Right Guard and a good Right Tackle. Damion “Matador” McIntosh sucks!

THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD HIM TO TAKE A HIKE WHEN HE HELD

DICK VERMIL HAD HIM PEGGED WHEN HE SAID HE NEEDS TO TAKE HIS DIAPPERS OFF!! BUILD THE OL!! THIGPEN IS THE GUY
THE BEST QB IN THE WORLD WOULD HAVE BAD STATS IF HE WAS ON HIS BACK ALL THE TIME, FIND THE 3 GUYS TO FILL ROAF’S SHIELDS, AND RICHARDSON’S SHOES THEN WE WOULD HAVE A NUMBER 1 OFFENCE AGAIN KEEP TONY AND ANY RUNNING BACK WOULD BE 1000 YARDER AND THIGPEN WOULD DEVELOPE INTO A GREAT QB AND YES WE NEED A DEFENCE THAT CAN STOP SOME ONE WHEN WE GET THE PIONT ON THE BOARD GOOOOO CHIEEEEFS!!!

    45. Travis – Agree with your comments But Boldin has an issue with wanting starting pay, Hence Arizona would not be able to keep him. Therefor he could be on another team.

Warner loves Haley (no not that way you pervs.) He loves a fast passing game. Could be still a possibility as a mentor for Tyler.

If we could get Peppers and Suggs I would be estatic. I still believe that the O-Line needs the work to save a QB and make the Offense click

      Comment by kcchiefs19692003 — February 7, 2009 @ 10:08 pm

    46. The problem we will be fighting in the free agent market is that everyone got an increase. That is why I think Arizona will eventually give Boldin what he wants. I saw an interview this morning and they said they won’t trade him (2 years remaining on contract). I like Warner, but Pioli’s history would suggest that isn’t likely, not to mention what we would have to give for a 1 or 2 year deal. I think Pioli is going to want credit for building a team, like the Patriots, that are solid for years with minimal additions.

I would really like to see some combination of Suggs, Tommie Harris, Vilma, and Peppers on the defensive side, although I wouldn’t complain about an addition of any of the above.

Saturday and Goff or Snee would make the offensive line productive again, instantly. Roy Williams would be a great addition for the offense also.

      Comment by Travis — February 7, 2009 @ 10:30 pm

    47. I have been pondering a lot lately on who the Defensive Coordinator for the Chiefs might be. This is a crucial hire because we need a great guy to run the defense. Haley will take care of the offensive side but we need someone who can come in and take care of the defensive side and restore the glory. While I have pondered on it i have thought about the things that would be important for this most important of roles. He would have to be a guy that really and truly understands defense, is on the same page as Clark, Haley, and Pioli and would bring some innovation, creativity and moderness to our bland, vanilla defensive schemes. Our personnel on defense is that of a 4-3 with potential to run a hybrid 3-4 provided we bring in some linebackers. Upon sifting through all of this I keep coming across Todd Bowles’ name. It makes quite a bit of sense. This is another young guy who, like Todd Haley, is from the Bill Parcells tree. He would most likely be on the same page as Clark/Pioli/Haley. He would run a 4-3/3-4 hybrid type defense. I might be wrong but this is where I see this going possibly.

    49. Ive seen Tommie Harris name show up as a potential free agent a couple of times, if Im not mistaken, the Bears gave him a deal during the 2008 season that extended him.

It wouldn’t be the first free agent on the free agency websites that was simply never taken off the list

    50. Best possible scenario would be to pick up haynesworth. That would be huge. Next get a QB to be a leader for the offense (I just don’t see that in thigpen) then fill out the team with some good draft picks. Don’t be surprised if Lj and tony g are both still wearing the red and gold next season. The chiefs need All the talent they can get right now and trading either of them would be a bad idea. Just look at the situation in NYG a couple years back, winning solves all those problems. Plus with a good O line I could see a thunder/ lightning combo like in Tennessee.

    51. I do realize that we are waaay under the cap and could get some quality free agents, I just dont think that Tank Johnson would be a good fit for us. We are already gonna get rid of Larry and thats basically all of our (known) character issues for this team. Granted I agree that Haley wouldnt take as much shit as say Herm would… but we just dont need that on our football team.

The other guys would help, but I think Cottam will be a good starting TE whenever it’s his time so that means no Daniels.

I want any of the Ravens players that will be free agents for sure and Peppers if we could lock him up.

Boldin would be great.. character issues could be a concern but if he comes to KC then he gets a new contract and he would be happy with that. Haley would know how to control him too. We could also nix the idea of drafting Crabtree with this move as then we have 2 great and solid WRs.

    52. Tony should stay, but, only if it is what he wants, if he wants out, we should try to work out a trade to the best team possible for him, as long as we get something decent in return.

Larry Johnson on the other hand should rot in misery. So, for LJ I suggest we do one of two things, first is if we can not get the best possible deal from Detroit (Otherwise known as Football Hell), then the Chiefs should pull an Al Davis move, and let LJ rot on the bench or practice squad or inactive list for each game the rest of his career. Yes, the Chiefs will have to pay him, but, I am sure there are a whole lot of insentives that he will miss out on, just because he is not even getting a sniff of the playing field!

    53. Okay lets grow up and be realistic here. Let LJ rot in misery? He wants out of KC, let him go. Keeping him around and not letting him play is just plain childish. This is professional sports, teams wont generally do something for the plain simplicity of spite. Thats like not talking to a friend because you wanted to go swimming and he didn’t.

    54. Tommie Harris signed a one year deal with Chicago last year. He is a free agent again this year.

We have several options with LJ due to a clause in his contract regarding personal conduct. I don’t care what we do with him as long as he is no longer on the roster.

    55. Eh, I think that the odds are that he WILL be on the roster. They were discussing the possibilities for him on Metro sports the other day and they said exactly what I had been thinking for a while. His age, recent productivity and off the field issues make him very hard to move in a trade. His contract situation with us, they wont just outright release him. In all reality, our BEST bet, keep him or not, is to try to get him going behind whatever offense we run. Get him going so that then you can either keep him, OR if at that point the team is still interested in moving him, then in preseason and early in the regular season you pretty much showcase him and get it on tape that he still has stuff left in the tank and try to move him in a trade then.

    56. yea i think if we got boldin the offense would be good and draft a lineman with our pick i live in tn haynesworth only played good in contract years but if he played the way he did here the last 2yrs he will make everyone on the d look better

    57. You guys…if we get a good line LJ will be as good as any back in the league. You guys all say we need a better line…well if we do we don’t need to trade or whatever to LJ. Also at QB, if we have a better line anybody will be good…so Thigpen would be even better.

I don’t think our biggest moves will be on offense..they will be defense, defense, defense. If we don’t get a pass rusher, a couple linebackers, and a better corner/safety we will suck no matter if LJ is here or not.

      Comment by Josh — February 9, 2009 @ 9:02 pm

    58. LJ will most certainly not be near the top again, regardless of who he plays for or what line he plays behind, guaranteed. He does not hit the line with purpose and his only noteworthy runs the last two seasons has been holes the size of trucks. He seems to no longer be able to break tackles and is constantly tackled by corners that he should be running over.

Regardless of his benefit to the team, he is just as harmful in the locker room.

    59. Travis, I live in the Chicago area my friend, and I hate to tell you this, but, the Chiefs don’t want any part of Tommie Harris! The guys is a bust if he plays anything like he did last year! He stunk up the joint…kind of reminded me of LJ, got the big payday and then nothing!

CHIEFS HIRE FORMER OKLAHOMA COACH GIBBS

Kansas City kept its head coaching search, and now its subsequent assistant head coaching search, very quiet.

But the Chiefs will soon announce that they’ve hired former Saints defensive coordinator and University of Oklahoma coach Gary Gibbs to fill one of two vacant positions — either defensive coordinator or linebackers coach.
